Does Coldplay play a backing track at all of their concerts?

Featured Replies

I remember watching a video where Chris fell while singing in speed of sound, and it sounded as if he kept going loud and clear even though the mic was away from his mouth at the time.

Thanks for the help.

It seems as though he does; I was listening to AROBTTH from the 2003 DVD and I could faintly hear the piano in the background.

How would you explain when he messes up then? Whenever he messes up you can clearly hear nothing is playing in the backround. And as far as that video that you saw, the quality on that video is really really poor, and the timing was off.

It's nothing you would notice if you weren't listening specifically for it. Listen to AROBTTH from the Live 2003 dvd, and you can hear the few high piano chords played right before the second chorus if you listen closely.

^I'm sorry, but everyone watched and listened to that and the overall consensus was that it was inconclusive.;)

the only backing tracks are some of jonnys guitar parts. like the screeching type sounds in some of the songs like square one where he couldent possibly be playing that and the lead line at the same time. but those are few and far in between. just look at any live performance and they mess up and stop and start all the time and theres nothing there besides what they are playing. their guitar tech helps out on a few songs i know that but hardly at all.

I remember reading that a little of the drums in the intro to Clocks is on track.

@luigio.

is the video of chris falling at square one in the internet? if, can you send me a link?

Isn't there a synthtrack on White Shadows, X&Y and Square one live?

*edit Does these even counts as backing tracks? :p

  • 2 weeks later...

Most of the tracks from X&Y have synth in the background on the album versions, and the ones that they play live from X&Y usually do as well.

It all depends on what you classify as "backing tracks."

For instance, Square One performed live definitely has computer-controlled sounds, such as the drumstick sounds sta the beginning and end. Politik has a synth track just as in the album version. Speed of Sound has a backtrack in the album, but im not too sure about the live versions. Talk definitely does, as its the opening sound to the track anyway. Swallowed in the Sea does, but its played softly. I think What If does, but dont hold me to that. Clocks also does, without a doubt, as the verses are mainly drums and synth driven.

Obviously, in Live 2003, Yellow is played with a backtrack, unless Chris was magically playing an invisible acoustic guitar while singing with a mic.

The reason most people dont notice it is because all the album versions have them too (obviously, or why would they use them live?), so it doesnt sound that different. The idea of a backtrack is just that, its in the background. If its there you dont notice it, but without it, the song sounds completely different.

I think Johnny's guitar tech plays in some of the songs that require more than two guitars.

You are totally wrong... for one the only recorded guitar parts are jonny's, and those are only just short weird noises like screeching noises twards the end of square one I think it is. Also the intro and outro clicking sound to square one is guy on his mini moog if you've ever seen them live. Guy also plays his mini moog on speed of sound, and Matt Miginn, jonnys guitar tech, played the acoustic bit to yellow just off stage for the 2003 tour. This tour chris plays it. In my opnion the only ones you can be 100% sure theres something prerecorded going on is in Talk and Clocks, and even then they are just background synth sounds that dont really take away from the band. As for that video of chris falling... as long as your not clearly deaf you can hear his voice go out when he falls. I used to be a FOH engineer for around 8 years and I can tell you for sure there is NO VOCAL BACKING TRACKS EVER! Its all chris and the rest of the band.

Um, Speed Of Sound definately has a backing track to it on the How We Saw The World special. When the piano is going half way through the song, Chris is still dancing around and making his way back to the piano. Then you can hear his high notes that he starts playing with the backing track.

That's because Guy is playing on his Mini Moog thingy.

I think the timing is off on the video. If you listen, there is a short moment of silence...that's probably when he fell (and in true Chris fasion, kept going lol)

But there are parts to their shows that are not live (parts of S1, SOS, WS, etc). But this is because there is only 4 members of the band. This is why the setlist wasn't as flexible this past tour.

the background track of the acoustic guitar in live 2003 is poor, i think.

they should have chosen another option

Ah, ok thanks for clearing that up. Thats cool that someone else was playing the guitar in the Live 2003 performances... I always wondered how they got the timing to be so good.

But I am pretty sure that Politik live uses a backing track. In the album version, you can hear a string/synth background, and you can hear a similar sound when they play live; watch the How We Saw the World footage, its in there as well, and I dont think the band brings with them a small quartet of string players, much less an orchestra.

And how, may I ask, does Guy play his Mini Moog when he is walking onstage to his instruments? I have been to 2 live performances by Coldplay, and both times, the clicking intro for Square One started just as the band was walking onstage, from under the screen. Maybe he plays it later, and at the end of the song, but unless he carries the moog in his pocket the whole time, there has to be a backtrack to Square One at some point.

And of course im not saying that these backtracks take away from the band, but the question was raised "Do they use backtracks?", not "Do the backtracks take away from the band?"

Thats all im saying...

Well, I was at the show where he fell right in front of me and he was the only one singing he just kept on singing while he got up and grabbed the mic. He's like the energizer bunny ... just keeps on going! Even though he hurt his leg in the process. They do have a guitar player on the side of the stage... I saw that too! There are backtracks, yes...I agree to get the full sound sometimes, but the vocals are all live.

i watched the vid as well now and you can clearly hear that after he fell there is silence for a short moment. listen to the music without watching the vid and you will notice.

heres my opinion:

Square One: The Snare intro with the clicking is computer Controlled

Talk: The Whirring noise is computer Controlled

X&Y: has a short play back of the violin ending as you hear in the recorded/studio version

Speed of Sound: it does not having a "back track" Guy plays his mini morg

Chris also plays his piano.

Live 2003 has been re-edited and the "back-track" you can hear would have been put in during editing.

Yellow's acoustic guitar was played by Jonny's guitar technician, but Chris played it on The Twisted Logic Tour, which is alot better. The Vocals are never "back-tracked" which is good.

The Only Time i have seen a Coldplay "Instrumental back-track" was on CD:UK and TopOfThePops with the Songs: Speed of Sound, A message and Fix You, the Acoustic sound in A message could also be created by a "full acoustic pedal" for Jonny's Guitar. Another Performance with a "back-track" is ROVE LIVE Coldplay God put a Smile upon your face. I think the back track could be the producer's request or a re-edit

In Speed of Sound Guy doesn't plays his mini morg, there's background. If you pay attention, even when Guy is playing bass you can hear the backing track. The mini morg is just used in the start of Square One and in the end of White Shadows.
