Coldplay "we'll be back with a massive show" and why they didn't play new songs

Featured Replies

I won Coldplay tickets on the local radio station a few years ago. You had to ask a trivia question and stump the DJ. I asked him to name all 4 members of the band, and he only knew Chris's name. Fans and media tend to focus on the singer in a band That is difinitely not right.

But in deffense of Chris (I'm doing this alot these days, lol) He speaks regularly about how cp is 4 equals, not just himself. And the others have said they prefer hanging back and letting Chris do most of the talking. So it's really not fair to blame him. I agree he can be a bit starry at times, but he's doing what people seem to expect of him.

And if he called a fan an asshole, this whole board would be in an uproar, lol. Not trying to insult you, Mandy. Just offerring andother 2 cents.

i was watching The Brit Awards the other night and all the members of Muse spoke when they accepted an award and when they were interviewed and it made me question, why doesn't all of Coldplay do that!

cos really, I'd like to hear what all the members of CP had to say, not just Chris..though I love it, I'd still like to hear them all speak...

but i can see that the other members like to hang back, but with Chris talking all the time, that's how the public will make assumptions about Coldplay altogether..

I think Will, Guy and Jonny LIKE not doing press etc - they seem to avoid it as much as possible and have always said they are happy not being in the spotlight and don't envy Chris after seeing how crazy it has got with the paps etc.

Perhaps we assume it's Chris stealing the limelight a bit, but maybe the boys just actively try to keep themselves in the background. And avoiding the press is the best way to do it...

I do think they go out of their way. There are times during interviews when Chris will want them to answer something and they practically just sit there, lol.

You always get the impression that Guy, Will and Jonny are quite shy... whereas Chris is like an excitable kid! :laugh3:

They've been together for over ten years and everyone seems happy with the position they have in the band. They are really close friends so in private the others probably have their say and are more dominate, but in public Guy, Will and Jonny choose to sit back and maintain their privacy.

If anyone was going to be annoyed with that I'd think it would be Chris, not the other boys - he's the one who gets all the pressure from the press as a result...

I was just going to use exactly this point.

I think it would be naive of people to really believe that the other guys don't want attention for being in the band, or don't like recognition or anything for their opinions. I'm sure they do, but they probably feel over shadowed by Chris.

It's pretty ironic actually...We sit up watching the New Songs thread and there are no new songs because of US!!! Lol!

As for running your music by your fans, I'm sorry, but that's simply not true or fair. Your music, no matter how much others love it or hate it, is for you first, and the band's approval of what they write is all that matters.

Yeah it is! :laugh3:

I can understand where they're coming from, but the people who will want to hear the new stuff is only really the fans. And surely it can't be a bad thing to get our feedback on it? It's a shame. I was really looking forward to hearing some new stuff. Even if it was just some rough sounds they'd put together!

You can't blame 'em. He's right. In this group we were talking about putting them on the internet and in another discussion i said it would ruin the surprise. On the other hand, he shouldn't say that if they are not gunna do it, but what do guy will, and jonny have to say?

I was just going to use exactly this point.

I don't think it's naive to think that the boys actually choose to stay out of the press and avoid attention. Fame is only one aspect of recognition of talent and not everyone needs that kind of attention to feel like they have accomplished something.

Jonny, Will and Guy seem content with the knowledge that their music is appreciated by fans and music critics and that they sell millions of albums. They don't need the press singling them out for recognition and heaping personal praise on them to know that they're successful.

Also they have families and personal lives that they want to protect. By opening themselve up to the press and putting themselves more in the spotlight they inevitably expose other aspects of their life to public scrutiny. Family and privacy have always been paramount to them - more important than personal recognition.

When you think about it that way, keeping out of the public eye as much as possible seems pretty sensible! They get to be part of one of the the biggest band's around and also live totally normal, private lives with their families.

I know, I know I know, I'm sorry, I'm just tired of hearing about Chris Martin touring Latin America. Seriously.

Its getting to the point of him being a solo act and JB, WC, AND GB are his road band.

Aw Mandy, I feel like that sometimes [quite a lot:laugh3: ] as well. I always feel that in interviews whenever the other guys try to say something Chris always interrupts or finishes their sentences. I was so happy at the Brits last year when he handed the mic to Will and let him give the best album speech. Will actually dedicated the award to a little boy, who was sick I think. But then after he spoke Chris took the mic back and made that comment about them being away for a few years. In the TV coverage you only saw a couple of seconds of Will's speech (missing out the bit about the boy) and that Chris comment was the only thing the media focused on. That made me really angry. Having said that I don't think Chris does stuff like that on purpose. And in general I think the other guys are quite happy to remain out of the public eye. I'm was hoping for the next album they might come forward a bit. With X&Y they did a little. Fix you for example, where they all sing.

:D

Jonny,Will and Guy addmitted that they want to take of some baggage from Chris's back. I've heard that not once.

Guy's wife has been on multiple occasions in medias.

I think that rather than wanting to, they feel they ought to take more of the burden of the press, as they feel bad for the grief that Chris gets.

But as you say, most of the time what we actually see or read is in the hands of the press or tv companies, who are more interested in Chris because he's the front man and his marriage... Maybe Chris does sit back and let the others say their piece during interviews but we rarely get to see it because it's edited out or not printed... shame, but it's proabably true.

Fudge - When you said that the boys start saying something and Chris finishes off their sentences, it reminded me of an old married couple! :laugh3:

Yep! Old married couple is right. ALot of bands say that being in a band is like being in a marriage, and I can attest to that. I've been working with the same woman for 15 years now, and we finish each other's sentances too, lol.:) ANd Chris is just so excitable that he's probably not cutting the others off on purpose...I do it all the time, and it's not out of ego. It's just that there's a point I really want to get across so I shove it in and realize after the fact that I've done it. I'm not comparing myself to Chris, but we do lack some of the same sociasl skills, lol.

Cool

que suerte para todos ver a la banda, ya falta poco para que lleguen a méxico!!, saludos y suerte

Yeah I guess. I do that to my friend :laugh3:

you know what, I just watched THe Scientist live at Glasto....and I love Chris again:laugh3:

Aw...glad to hear it!:) Has anyone checked in multimedia yet? We have some REALLY nice newbies around here!:D :D ;)

woah..they even played high speed

how awesome this article is..love that and love Chris!

Look at the previous "new" material they played live on the A rush of blood to the head tour. Most of the songs didnt even make the next album(X&y).A couple made it to the studio as b-sides.So if they were too play new stuff now im pretty sure its not gonna end up on the new album anyways.Being its early in the making of the album stage. So i dont know why chris would be worried about the internet, unless the songs are REALLY good. But oh well.Maybe we will hear new songs and maybe we wont. But i wont get my hopes up that we will.

I read somewhere that Chris writes prolifically, so they can't use everything for the album anyway. I'd love to hear soemthing new whether it makes the album or not, but as you say, I'm not holding my breath.:)

BTW, where did the Will quote in your sig come from?

The Will quote is from to tour diary on the Live 2003 DVD, when he was talking about the lyrics of Coldplay's songs, he said that ;)
