Dirty Pretty Things frontman Carl Barat has accused Coldplay of “jumping on the bandwagon” by allowing fans to download their new single for free. ‘Violet Hill’ was released as a free download via the bands website on Tuesday (April 29th) and accumulated 600,000 downloads in the first 24 hours. However, Barat said that by allowing people free access to their music the band were hurting smaller groups. “You can't escape the fact that big name, big money bands who release their stuff for free are harming the scene,” Barat said, in an interview with YahooMusic. "The industry is struggling financially and this is like missile after missile. How do new bands compete?" Coldplay are the latest big name band to give away their music for free. May 2, 200818 yr New bands complete by NOT giving away their music for free :P It's not like us consumers are complete idiots and think that that means the only music worth having is free. It's only one song too, they're still going down the traditional route with the album. It's nothing to do with if you pay for it anyway, if you like a new band enough you'll buy their music whether it's free or not. Why can't a huge band that can afford it give something back once in a while?

May 2, 200818 yr It's a pathetic argument. Small, relatively unknown bands have been giving away free tracks for years now- long before any majors got the idea. And the same internet that let Coldplay give their track away is the very reason so many smaller bands have become known in recent years. It's why there aren't as many big names in general to upset things - the fans are all going off in their own directions after all the different little bands. It's why little old me in Nova Scotia far away from his 'scene' can say that not only have I heard of Carl Barat, but I quite like a couple of his songs.
May 2, 200818 yr Barat fails to consider that the money people are not spending in a radiohead album, a NIN album or a coldplay single, will be instead spent in other bands, which will actually benefit smaller bands.
