Seriously the NME as a weekly magazine is dying, it's numbers only pick up when they do give-aways, soon it will change to a fortnightly magazine with less news and more 'exclusives'

It seems picking on Coldplay gets the same feedback as bands picking on Oasis and Radiohead, gets a few headlines, hoping for a quick plug of the band etc. Well maybe if dirty pretty thing's last album wasn't a 3-trick pony where you had 3 songs which were repeated over and over, it might have sold more :P
May 4, 200818 yr Barat fails to consider that the money people are not spending in a radiohead album, a NIN album or a coldplay single, will be instead spent in other bands, which will actually benefit smaller bands. Not to mention bands giving away cds with newspapers these days. Instead of spending the money on buying this mainstream's artists album which I got for free via a newspaper/internet, I will spend my money on buying that album by that new band I have been hearing a lot about lately *walks into the closest thing andover has got for a music store, to discover that because that album by that new band I have been hearing a lot about lately isn't stocked due to them being a new band* Damn :(
May 4, 200818 yr Hi, first poster here... I think this is kinda MAD, you know. People would've downloaded the single for free even if the lads hadn't made that available for free. The thing is there's no competition among them... The big issue is the industry itself. In the past people taped songs from the FM stations and I don't see the free download from a different angle than that. Spot on If they didn't make the single available for free via the official website, getting fans to give them their email addresses, so that they get added to the database when the official site does a large email saying "albums out now, buy it", for promotion, the fans would have downloaded it for free from file-sharing network sites. What the band has lost in terms of sales, they have gained in getting quite a lot of email addresses.

If a band were doing it for a love of music it wouldn't matter if you broke out of their hole or toiled in orscurity forever with a niche audience. It wouldn't even matter if they gave away music free or not, people will still steal it, especially a small band that might just suck (who wants to take a gamble of a £10 on an unproven bands album?) Im sure no matter how well they do they'll end up making more money than most of their fans will see in a lifetime.
