The only reason he said all this is because it's Coldplay. No one in the music industry has any respect for them, so they criticize them whenever possible. Really this guy said this because he can't stand that people love this kind of music. Did anyone question Radiohead when they gave away AN ENTIRE ALBUM FOR FREE FOR MORE THAN A MONTH?!? No, because people have respect for them. I just hope one day these kinds of people will "open up their eyes" and see how great Coldplay is.

How on earth could giving away a single song have any impact whatsoever on smaller bands? It's not like my iPod is so clogged up with free music from Coldplay that I don't have time for any other music. Even if Violet Hill were the best song I ever heard (it's not), and I listened to it 100 times in a row, I would still be looking for more music when I had my fill. In fact, hearing VH got me thinking about music and I went out and discovered a Brit Rock band called Elbow who just put out an awsome album I bought called "The Seldom Seen Kid" (check it out!).

 

Plus, this argument completely ignores the fact that free music on MySpace basically gave Kate Nash and Lily Allen their starts.

 

Unfortunately for Barat, he doesn't realize that the internet is there to help artists who are actually talented enough that people want to hear their music. I guess that leaves him out in the cold.

 

This is like Burger King complaining that Auntee Anne's is ruining the fast food industry for giving away free pretzel samples in the mall food courts.

If Coldplay gives away free music, people have more money left to buy other music:)

I think this is kinda MAD, you know.

People would've downloaded the single for free even if the lads hadn't made that available for free. The thing is there's no competition among them... The big issue is the industry itself. In the past people taped songs from the FM stations and I don't see the free download from a different angle than that.

You know, the guy who accused Coldplay of something nefarious to get his name and his band in the news. Free publicity!

I totally get his point. After all, if big bands - such as Coldplay, Radiohead - release their music for free, we have more money for stuff like, I dunno, CD's from small-time bands?

 

... honestly, I don't get his reasoning. How does Coldplay giving away a single for free - that, less face it, we would've ripped from radio and downloaded anyway - in any way affect the sales of smaller bands?

 

I personally think Coldplay gave it away from free in decent quality because they knew it was going to be ripped anyway and they preferred it if people listened to it in the quality that they intended for us to listen to. But maybe Barat is right and this is a big conspiracy to destroy the smaller bands (who have more of a chance to breakthrough now than ever before, by the way, because of the internet and simpler means of traveling around and doing gigs).

 

EDIT: Just read through the thread and noticed most of my points have been made before. The guy doesn't make sense.

 

But what's with the Green Day bashing? I thought Coldplay fans were more sophisticated than that, being able to respect each others taste in music and all that. That's what Chris Martin seems to be doing, anyway.

Dirty Pretty Things frontman Carl Barat has accused Coldplay of “jumping on the bandwagon” by allowing fans to download their new single for free.

 

‘Violet Hill’ was released as a free download via the bands website on Tuesday (April 29th) and accumulated 600,000 downloads in the first 24 hours.

 

However, Barat said that by allowing people free access to their music the band were hurting smaller groups.

 

“You can't escape the fact that big name, big money bands who release their stuff for free are harming the scene,” Barat said, in an interview with YahooMusic.

 

"The industry is struggling financially and this is like missile after missile. How do new bands compete?"

 

Coldplay are the latest big name band to give away their music for free.

 

Last year, Radiohead allowed fans to name what price they paid for their latest album, ‘In Rainbows’.

Fair enough, I get your point and by no means did I mean that we should follow Chris or something :) It's just silly how they're protecting a band - who seems to get along with every other musician in the world - while dissing another. I never got the whole "your band sucks cause they're posers" crap that people come up with - different strokes for different folks. Maybe you were kidding, but I'm sure that other members were not. I'm not a Green Day fan but I respect what they're doing and I think it's pathetic to attack them - especially if you're doing it in the same thread where they're bashing Barat for attacking Coldplay; I'm sure I'm not the only one who sees the hypocrisy of that :)

...Well, from what I've seen, there has been a problem within the music industry - there had been more support for new artists years back, to allow them to develop, etc. (Frontline ran a special on it - "the day the music died" I think the episode was called..) So, he's got a point kind-of. Except, Coldplay's giving away free music isn't really the problem - it's got more to do with the industry itself, as I recall..

Anyhow, fixing it might have something to do with musicians rebelling against the machine - if the industry has been taking musicians for granted, then it's time for a check and a balance.;)...

I would like to see the original transcript of that interview- I saw some other versions, and it looks like Barat was talking about it all in the context of how hard it was for his band to scrape together the money for recording their next album- in spite of being somewhat successful.

 

Watching another band rent out Madison Square Garden when you can't afford studio time, that's got to hurt.

 

Talking about his own group's financial constraints, he said: "We didn’t have a big budget for our new album. And we’ve had to supplement the cash by doing more sideline work.

 

"I hope people don’t think we’re starting to go all corporate. We’re not. We just want to keep putting out music and being a band."

If I was Coldplay I wouldn't let ANYONE dissuade me from any big decision. People will get pissy if they charge alot for their concerts, and people will get pissy if they give a FREE concert. And all the backlash about whether the album art and title are any good. SO WHAT!!!!!!????????? That's what they named it!!! Get over it!!!! They can't go around to every friggin person in the world and ask them what they should name their album. Obviously EVERYONE is gonna have a different idea. So just go with your guy and name it what you feel is best and give away your music, charge $500 for it. Whatever you think is in the best interest of the consumer!!!
