This album was made in 1999.

pretty similar don't ya think?

its a satire of the actually painting by a japaneese bad....why the hate?

There's a lot of revolution paintings that look similar to both of those covers. I don't think it was plagiarised but it's certainly not very original.

I don't hate,I'm just pointing it out as something I've come across.

I love coldplay.

Actually, wouldn't the Dragon Ash cover be the 'plagiarised' one?

Thanks for playing.

Liberty leading the people is art in the public domain. It is unsurprising that more than one artist has taken it up...and it's certainly not plagarism. And even if it was, who's going to win that argument? Obscure Japanese band or Coldplay and EMI's mighty lawyers? :P

I'm refering to both of them having Viva la revolution and Viva La Vida and both show similar pictures,it's not an attack of coldplay just something I found.I'm a fan you know, not some coldplay basher.

Hey lets not hate, Laura has been a member here and the official board for a long time, she was only pointing it out.

Anyway I agree with Jess, not plagiarised, just not very original :D

My comments weren't meant to sound mean, just that it's not really plagarism...probs just a different choice of words would have done it :D

I could change the title to Spot the difference? :P

May prevent further misunderstandings. Thanks for the info anyway, it is interesting that another band has used the art before :D

  • Author

my first instinct was plagurism as you would think if someone copied and changed some art you did.

But the whole unoriginal thing is shining through more now.Bet they're well gutted :P

The title change did it. It didn't look like a negative thread to me.:)

THis has actually been pointed out before too, and I agree it's not really a theft, more a cool coincidence.:)

Having just been back on the coldplaying scene I didn't check if it had been mentioned before. My bad! :P

what's the big deal anyway? Its not like that other band is bigger than Coldplay. Theyve earned the right to use similar album covers.

i saw this before. It's interesting the resemblance of the Name and the Album cover. It's not very original but it's not a bad choice if I do say so myself.

I thought the whole point of an album cover was to be original, but good ole DragonAsh pipped them to the post! :P

It is, I think, to be as original as possible (i.e. X&Y, AROBTTH) but... here's one thing, at least it doesn't suck. The album cover is a pretty good choice.

I like it personally.

I'm not an art expert here but looking at the album cover it says to me that 2 types of art have collided.(stating the obvious here but hear me out.)

There's the really famous french painting and then you've got graffiti slapped on top,if you could call it that. Maybe it symbolizes the change in coldplay's style and is reflected through the different art. You've got the way art was way back and the way art is now.

The actual painting itself is Romantic, which was a movement in the 1800s which was "a revolt against aristocratic social and political norms" (thankyou Wikipedia). This is really backed up by "Viva la Vida", from a Frida Kahlo painting. Kahlo was a Surrealist, and that movement again sought to differ from the norms, break out of the restraints of society and governing bodies and basically have more personal freedom of thinking and speech.

Probably the above is not posted in the best place, but I'm doing an English Degree and was sat in class today learning about how Kahlo influenced Surrealist poets and instead of listening began to think that Coldplay are being clever buggers here, writing more freely and subverting norms and speaking out against war and the government (eg. Violet Hill's "Carnival of Idiots") and then backing it up with relevant artwork.

/my two pence.

i came to know that some people here doesn't like coldplay at all who are with us.

i don't see any comparisions of them infact if i see any they're all nothing than just to break us.

But hey what do us lowly "superfans" know eh? ;)

lol!

Well I'd say coldplaying are more in the know that the other forum.coldplay.com is dying fast, you can't even post right sometimes.I don't think I'm much as a superfan as I used to be,but soon that will all change.

I can see how's it's being unoriginal but I can't get out my head there's a slight bit of plagurism going on.Oh well, i just have to accept it the way it is!
