Wow.

So I have to confess that I downloaded the leak--and I am in heaven now that I'm listening to these new songs as I type this.

I locked myself in my room and just hit play on the first track and was immediately pleased. I have to say, though, that as the album closed off I started to think "Well this album was good, really good in fact, but not GREAT."

BUT then I listened through a 2nd time and wow. All I can think of to say right now is that this album is brilliant. It has a new sound which is probably why I didnt see how amazing it really is at first. The first run through the album was sort of an adjustment, acclimation stage.

And now that I have listened to it through 2 times, I am just amazed and so so pleased.

The album is both emotional and intuitive. It's creative yet simple. It's lyrically beautiful and musically impressive. It is leaps and bounds above x&y. AROBTTH was such an emotional album that its hard to really 'beat'. That album was so emotional that it made you feel attached to it, so its hard to pass on to this new sound...but the transition is under way, and I might even find myself liking VLVODAAHF more than AROBTTH in due time.

Excellent Coldplay! You've done it again!

Agreed, all the songs are nearly equally powerful. The sounds are so worldly, cosmopolitan, and ultimately intelligent.

Coldplay have created a masterpiece.

agreed..

yeah I was worried they might have gone off the boil, but amazingly they have produced another amazing album, stronger than 90% of what they've done before. I think this one will silence many of their critics.. I find it amazing that Coldplay have been so consistently good, even the greatest bands have produced stinkers of albums/songs, but I can't think of a single time I've listened to them and thought 'oh no'.. I kind of get the impression on VLVODAAHF that they're all doing what they want musically, it's so much more confident, and more guitar-heavy which I always thought CP should be, Jonny is a great guitarist. I love the way the songs are so gentle and held back one minute, and then there's a snap change into strident, fast moving stuff. Brilliant indeed. Only problem is, other music seems a bit shit in comparison.. :)

If brilliant is your word for mediocre I couldn't agree more. Couldn't disagree with you any more strongly. VLV, DAAHF, Life In Technicolour, and the 2 hidden tracks (only spins on the other songs) are the only good songs in the album. I liked X&Y leagues better than this one, but whatever

This album is far better than X&Y. It has a more grown up sound to it. BTW your song choices for your top songs on the album are questionable. I agree with you that DAAHF is a strong track, but what about COL, LIJ, SS, or 42? LIT and VLV IMO are some of the weakest on the album. Guess everyone has their own opinions.

oh you're one of THOSE types of people....

y'know, the type with a bad music taste! :dozey:

You guys all really liked X&Y that much? I found it to be rather formulaic and wasn't impressed at all by it.

But how can you ask anyone to follow up the 1-2 punch of their first two albums? Absolutely impossible.

I dig the new VLV sound though, although I've only listened to it once so far. It really takes at least 10-20 listens to an album in its entirety to get a grip on it, don't you guys think?

As a fan who has always thought Parachutes was their best work, I am FLOORED by Viva la Vida. Regardless of the fact that it is heavily-produced, the heavy production WORKS on this album. It works brilliantly. The album has a level of passion and depth on it that certainly lacked on X&Y.

I havent listened to the complete album. As much as I want to, and have actually downloaded it, i just took a listen at 42 and Cemetaries of London. So far the album is pretty good. In my opinion I can't say its their best work, but it wll definately grow on me. It took a while for X&Y to really get to me and i'm sure this album will do the same.

AROBTTH is hands down my favorite album. There was not one song that didn't make me shiver. It was sensational.

I think the problem with this album, and I include myself in this , all us coldplay fans WANT to love this album more than we actually do/should! while theyre a moments of brilliance on this album, I feel they are few and far between!

VLV is a great track , one of the very few genuinely uplifting songs on the album! even when coldplay are at their saddest , their songs have always been thrilling and uplifting! cant get into '42', I must have listened to it 20 times and still it seems a complete mess to me! Martin seems to have lost the powerful ability he once had where you felt he was actually singing to you, the listener, and not music critics or his musical contemporaries alike!

And whats with the 3 double-track songs? why try and kid on that there is only 10 songs when theyre is pretty much 13! very portensous if you ask me! much like when they made a major error by having 'til Kingdom Come' as a hidden track, when IMO it was the best song on X&Y.

Very much think that the album suffers from over-production, with Brian Eno trying to stamp his authority all over the album, rather than getting the best out of the band!! DOnt get me wrong, I love Coldplay and have already paid my £50 for a ticket for the ridiculously 'ALL-SEATED' (??????) UK Tour. and ill no doubt love the gig as they are great live.

i just feel the have lost their way a bit, and no longer have the charm their earlier music had!

anymore than 7.5 out of 10 would over-rating IMO

bloody brilliant indeed

Coldplay have created a masterpiece.

Aye.

X&Y was an album with great melodies and great anthems thus CP became more popular and succesful in the world. The music hat a spheric touch.

VLV is definitely better than Parachutes but if it has the power to beat the last two albums depends on how it develop after more listenings.

Im my opinion VLV has no many big hits but also no really weak song. It is more balanced.

Good thoughts.

VLV is so beautiful, but there are no radio friendly songs (VLV and VH...kind of...), which isn't necessarily a bad thing!

after giving back to back listens to VLV and U2's War, the influence becomes quite obvious...

also if you're liking VLV definitely check out U2's War if you haven't already

This album is so excellent.

Some of you are looking for excuses to don't like it.

I was one of those that don't like the album at first.

But know, after several days, listening once or two times a day, this album has grown on me in a way that I wasn't prepared at all.

I'm amazed at this excellent cd.

I love most of the songs, I can't stop singing songs like Lost, or Cemeteries of London, or 42. 42 is an awesome song. I didn´t want to sing that songs, I started to sing them without want it, it's like the songs have entered in my mind slowly and without any help of my part.

When Lovers of Japan starts, I feel so excited, because the album has an in crescendo way that makes me enter in an emotional trip that makes me like it more.

And then, "Yes" appears and it is kind of balsam, it makes me feel so good, its melody, its lyrics. People, English is not my first language so I can't describe how deep this cd has entered in my mind and heart.

While I'm writing this post, I'm listening to "Yes" and it's like its atmosphere has took my place, it’s so beautiful, Chris sings so well in this song. What an excellent song!!!!!!!!!! It's not for radio; it’s not for casual ears, because it’s too long, it has a lot of changes, but people, our friends need to listening to a song like "Yes". Coldplay will have more fans after releasing this cd.

The same has happened to me with Viva La Vida and Violet Hill. These songs have grown on me and now I like both a lot.

You have to let this cd grow in you, stop analyzing it.

These guys have worked a lot, and with one or two listening is not enough to appreciate it.

Coldplay has entered a new level with this release.

And I will stop talking about the past.

I love Parachutes, I discovered Coldplay with it.

I love AROBTTH, it was my first concert.

Of course, I love X&Y.

But those albums are the past.

Now Coldplay has entered a new era.

Will you be part of it????

I can't wait to buy this cd, I can't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good thoughts.

VLV is so beautiful, but there are no radio friendly songs (VLV and VH...kind of...), which isn't necessarily a bad thing!

Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMHO, that is a big proof that Coldplay has entered in a new level. The limits of the radio have been broken. I feel so good about it.

Most of the songs that I like a lot from other bands are not so radio friendly, so what?? Those are excellent songs anyway.

I listen to the radio most of my day, because its kind of company, I work alone at home. So I have a pretty idea about what the radio is about. VLV is big, too big for radio play.

I can only say how amazed I am with this CD. The first time I listened through it -- like someone said earlier, it was just an adjustment.

This is my third time through the CD in less than twelve hours and I already love this CD more than X&Y, which was a great album. I can't compare it to AROBTTH and Parachutes because that's like comparing a butterfly to a caterpillar.

Now the ticket I just purchased for the concert in July is going to be 110% worth it.

Favorites if I have to pick them are:

1. 42

2. Death and All its Friends

3. Lovers in Japan

4. Lost?

5. Lost!

Note, I already have the Lost? (accoustic) song and it is my favorite song to play on the piano and sing along to at the moment, such a fantastic song. The full version is great, though.

Also, Is it me or does the first 30 seconds of Strawberry Swing remind you of a field recording of some japanese ritual or something? And then it materializes into this song that has such a great beat through it.

Viva La Vida or Death and All its Friends is a brilliant CD and I can't wait for my pre-order to come in. It seems like this well thought out story with a beginning and an end and you decide truly, is it Life or Death? And while you decide, there is this heartbeat that just keeps on beating throughout the entire CD.

By means of listening to it, I think it's a good CD. However, the first time i listened to it, i only enjoyed four songs. Now, i like them all.:)

  • 2 weeks later...

I have listened to every Coldplay album and without a doubt this one is no different, you have to listen to the whole thing and you have to listen to it many many times to really appreciated what they have done.

* Just a side note that I have caught, this album is never ending, repeat the album and the last song flows beautifully into the first one. I think that is cool.

* Great job! Can't wait to see this performed live!

oh you're one of THOSE types of people....

y'know, the type with a bad music taste! :dozey:

HEY NOW! don't talk about me! I know I like listening to Animals but that was just mean! :laugh3::P
