  • I can't give you the reasonings on why things changed, but I can give you an update from what I observed. The Oracle was run by Debs Wild. Debs is still with the band and helps out fans, for exam

Q. Hey, Oracle.

I've heard Coldplay's previous name was Starfish.

Why'd they change it?

The Oracle replies:

Er because it was c**p! C'mon it's not the greatest name is it?

Q. Absolutely loved the gig at the MEN on 11th Dec ... after the exhilaration of each show how do the band wind down? I have never heard crowd singing like it ... to hear your own songs like that must give them a massive buzz!

The Oracle replies:

Apparently the crowd was even louder there on Friday 12th. They do love the buzz without a doubt and it takes them a while to wind down. If they're hanging around at the venue they'll chill out, have a drink, say hello to friends or go back to the hotel or home but they couldn't go straight to sleep! Come to think of it, do you find it easy to wind down even after watching them? It always takes me ages to get to sleep especially when I've got the Viva whoa ohs in my head...

Q. Dude! An green question: what's the best thing for the environment to do, throw the waste paper in a basket or into the toilet?

The Oracle replies:

Recycle it! Don't throw it into a toilet, that's not good. Unless of course it's toilet paper.

Q. Hi Oracle went to the Sunday O2 gig and every second of it was TOTALLY FANTASTIC, especially the butterfly bit. It seems to me that every gig they do is the best ever - but have they every actually DONE a bad gig? And does every gig feel like the best to them too? Or do they just get used to it every night?

Thanks very much.

Love

Lucy

Cornwall xx

The Oracle replies:

They don't do bad gigs but they definitely have days where they feel it's not been their personal best. Performing live is like that for practically everyone. For whatever reason, shows can feel very different even if they're playing a similar or same set every night. They feed off the crowd too so if you want to improve the chances of it being a great gig to the best gig, go NUTS!

Yes, she does :smug:

Q. Cher Oracle,

It's a technical question, why is not there RSS feeds on the site ?

The Oracle replies:

There definitely is because our MySpace and Facebook pages have the official site's RSS feed on them. Once in the news section, have you seen the share button?

Q. Question for Coldplay - Re release Yellow with Diana from X-factor - garanteed number One.

The Oracle replies:

Over my dead body! Murdering it once was enough!

ugh that one was so mean!^^^

I loved Diana, and I don't think she murdered the song.

I agree with the Oracle 100%. She slaughtered it.

Q. I have a question about the lyrics to Yes. When Chris sing's " So up they picked me by the big... and they let go." What is in between big and they let go?

Thanks a lot.

The Oracle replies:

Oh we could have so much fun if we were playing Blankety Blank!

He actually says, "toe" but it's raised a chuckle from me!

Q. Why doesn't Coldplay switch up the setlist more often? They've been playing the same songs for a while now, excluding the inclusion of Life in Technicolor II...do they not realize that they have more than 25 songs in their catalog?

The Oracle replies:

Well they do mix it up a little but when you've put as much time and effort into the incredible lights and visuals it would take a lot more time to get that sorted for a new set list, which they're short on. That said, it's only people who go more than once (but not consecutive nights) who will notice the small changes that have taken place over the past seven months. Green Eyes is in, Trouble is out, Yellow has not only moved but started as an acoustic song on Stage C, Stage B had The Hardest Part added, Yes did make an appearance and so on. Most bands do stick to the same set list on tour it's only your Bruce Springsteen, Radiohead et al who make the main feature of the shows a change of songs. Coldplay's huge production lends itself to being less flexible but is so worth it!

Kylie switched it up heaps! The opening show in May wasn't exactly the same as the shows in Sydney. Coldplay can afford to change songs every now and again.

Ohh, the Oracle talks about Green Eyes today! One of my favourite songs!

That it was written for Jonny

Honey, you are a rock, Upon which I stand

Q. Dear Oracle thingy magingy all-knowing Jim bob person,

Having read through fourscore Oracle postings, my question is probably too much related to Coldplay for you to answer, but it's about Green Eyes. When I listened to it for the first time, I thought it was a gem because I immediately thought it was about Gwyneth, and that extra meaning just transformed it into a sparkly rainbow of a song. But I just read on a forum that Chris denied it's about her during a performance, at the time saying coldplay was gonna stop performing it too because it was always wrongly associated with her. Ok, so what is the real story behind this song? According to something else Chris said, it's got something to do with an "American friend".

I hope that's not too personal a question for him. If he says it is, just tell him I'm a UCL student and he'll be like "way to go! I'll tell ya".

Let me take this opportunity to say they are quite an inspiration to all UCL students, that 4 ordinary guys, well clever but ordinary, homey chaps, can make it big like that.

The Oracle replies:

Cheeky! Green Eyes was written about an "American friend" yes but also about Jonny. It has been played sporadically but I guess Chris got sick of being asked and rested it for a while, but since it was written before they met... you can see that it isn't.

^^^

Nice to know that the Oracle isn't afraid to admit the truth 'bout that song :smug:

Q. I've been told that the concert tomorrow night (19th December) has been cancelled - is this true???????

The Oracle replies:

Q. Hi Oracle

In the Roadie's blog for Sunday 14th it says that they rushed to BBC Television Centre to do a show. Do you know which one it was, or is it still to be broadcast?

The Oracle replies:

The clue was in the photo! They were filming for the Top of the Pops Christmas special that always airs on Christmas Day. It will be repeated if it turns out you're busy with your presents or dinner.

Which show??? Seriously???....... :dozey:

That's a very personal question the Oracle has answered there :stunned:

Q. Hi Oracle, whats the name of the Chris Martin and Ash song from Shaun of the Dead and where can I get it?

The Oracle replies:

There are three Ash songs in the film's soundtrack, Orpheus, Meltdown and a cover of The Buzzcock's Everybody's Happy Nowadays featuring Chris on vocals. You can actually find it on itunes.

Q. What was the classical piece of music played in the warm up before Coldplay came on stage at the O2 concert 16.12.08.

The Oracle replies:

The Blue Danube by Strauss comes straight after Jay-Z - I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me) that indicates it's showtime.

Kylie switched it up heaps! The opening show in May wasn't exactly the same as the shows in Sydney. Coldplay can afford to change songs every now and again.

Sweet! The Oracle finally answered one of my questions! He says Radiohead are one of the few bands who switch up the setlist, and that Coldplay's lights and visuals prevent them from changing the set list, but I like Radiohead's light show more than Coldplay's (yes, even though they don't have the shiny balls :P).

Q. Where do the Coldplay Crew get all the butterfly-confetti from?

Perhaps from a butterfly pooping pony out of Katy's world, like in the movie Horton Hears a Who?

The Oracle replies:

A company based in Illinois called Strictly FX who also provide the 30+ blowers that shower us with the butterflies during the show! It's the biggest confetti drop anywhere.

http://www.strictlyfx.com/coldplay.html

Strictly FX started touring with Coldplay in April of 2008. It started in Europe, traveled over to the U.S. for a little bit and then went back to Europe.

The show started out with a small confetti effect. As the tour went on, that effect got larger and larger until it has grown into what is possibly the largest confetti effect ever seen in a concert tour. There are 30 confetti machines used in each show pumping out pounds and pounds of confetti each second. There is also a "have to see it to believe it" confetti drop featuring UV confetti that glows in the dark.

Also on the Coldplay tour are 4 10-watt full-color air-cooled laser systems.

LD: Paul Normandale

Operator: Mike Hartle

Confetti Wrangler: Brook Blomquist

Q. Is the cover version of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" sung by Bono and Chris, Chris and U2, Bono and Coldplay, or with both bands? And when did they produce the cover version?

Thank You

The Oracle replies:

Bono was the brainchild behind this charity record that featured an array of artists. The aim was for the proceeds to benefit The United Way's September 11th Fund and Artists Against Aids Worldwide. Chris featured on the London Version along with Bono (and The Edge) so it was neither a U2 nor a Coldplay venture. This was back in 2001 after the aforementioned September 11th atrocities.

the oracle admitted green eyes was about jonny! :cheesy:

i like the butterfly question, but the oracle didn't say approximately HOW MANY butterflies are dropped on each show!. :P i've asked that question like three times now.

Q. Who is Emily Bart-Smith?

The Oracle replies:

Emily is a close friend of the band and has been for many years. She was also a member of The High Wire but wasn't part of the line-up that supported Coldplay on the last U.K leg of the tour.
