  • I can't give you the reasonings on why things changed, but I can give you an update from what I observed. The Oracle was run by Debs Wild. Debs is still with the band and helps out fans, for exam

Q. Hallo Oracle man/woman/thing,

How are you? (rhetorical!)

You see, I have a slight fascination with your album covers, and so I was wondering about a couple of things...

- Where was the picture of the band on the back cover of Parachutes taken?

- What is the meaning of the code/symbols used for all the X&Y album/single covers, and is it true (as I hear) that on the X&Y album cover there is a (deliberate?) mistake?

The Oracle replies:

The photos for Parachutes were taken in Blackpool by Tom Sheehan on Saturday 6th May 2000, the day after the band supported Embrace at Tower Ballroom.

Pretty sure I've mentioned it before but the X&Y sleeve is based on the Baudot code and there's no (deliberate) mistake that I know of.

Q. In my life so far, I've pretty much lived up to the law of my last name (Murphy's), or to paraphrase a soft rock god, every gun I've ever held HAS gone off. the latest 'will go wrong'... being diagnosed, at age 28, with a serious congenital heart defect which requires immediate surgery. The defect is 'rare' in children and almost never diagnosed in adults (its called Patent Ductus Arteriosus). I'm freaked out about the surgery (not least becase this condition is so rarely diagnosed in adults that the major hospital here doesn't even have the equipment or parts to perform the surgery)but, to be honest, more alarmed at the fact that my life seems to be a succession of smaller and larger disasters, one after the other. I'd hoped this would be something I'd 'grow out of', but, as 29 looms, it hasn't happened yet. It's not just the heart defect, or the gall stones diagnosed at 22, or the kidney stones shortly after that, or even that I snapped the bones in my foot while playing playstation. It's not even just health related. Everything seems to go wrong, or at the very least, be quite sideways-ish.

Is the universe trying to tell me something? Am I causing/ perpetuating this eternal 'rainy day'? Is positive thinking the key to a life lived largely outside the emergency room?

Thanks Oracle

The Oracle replies:

It's awful that you've had so many set backs and obstacles to overcome but you really need to think more about what YOU are telling the Universe.

I can't guarantee that your health issues will benefit greatly from my belief that positive thinking is essential if you are to make any changes. What seems to occur regularly is a vicious circle of negative if you constantly think that way. What would it hurt to try and think positive thoughts?

Rather than expecting bad things to happen (and I believe that can often perpetuate a self-fulfilling prophecy), expect good things to happen.

You've had a bad run so I can hardly blame you for feeling down about your lot but give it a go. It seems you have nothing to lose.

Practice affirmations every day and soon you may feel lighter and brighter. I found some examples for you but make up your own to suit yourself. You might feel a little ridiculous at first but hey, if it does end up working for you, no harm done! I always think it's best to try anything and everything to improve your situation and if it's safe and free, all the better!

Good luck.

Q. Dear Oracle !!

I need your help to decide where I should go for my next holidays. Here the thing: as I'm single and all my friends are going on holidays with their respective gf/bf I'll travel alone (which is ok as I'm use to it), I'm a big fan of music and cinema and I would like to go to a sunny place so what is the best place with all those characteristics where I can have fun and enjoy myself?

Thanks for your help !!

If I know where to address it, I'll send you a postcard (from faraway) ;)

Cheers,

Maeva

The Oracle replies:

How about Barcelona? You could go in June and maybe go to the Sonar festival. It's held from 18-20th and features music, art and film. The weather should be great then too. The city has an amazing history with so many places of interest, great food and fabulous location. You're near the beach too so you can combine all your needs and chill out too.

Q. Dear Oracle,

Is Phil Harvey pretty???

The Oracle replies:

We don't tend to use the word pretty to describe boys (unless they look like girls perhaps), but Phil is definitely handsome.

Q. Dear Oracle,

Where is the safest place to keep my concert tickets? I need them to be safe until July.=)

Thanks a million.

Anacaren

The Oracle replies:

I reckon that keeping them in a book is always a good idea. Make sure you remember which book though. Oh and don't do what I did when I was 15... During the school summer holidays I had hunted high and low in my house for lost tickets. I had to call the school caretaker to see if I had left them there. All my belongings were tied with string in a locker (regulations) and it wasn't until I had looked through every single thing that the tickets fell out of the last book left. So I suggest you pick your favourite book at home that no one is likely to tamper with. Failing that, Fort Knox is a safe bet!

Q. Hello Oracle! I'm a first-time questioner so do forgive me if this question has already been asked/a complete waste of your time. I went to the Nov. 1 concert in Philadelphia not really knowing many Coldplay songs. It was my first concert, and I was completely mesmerized the entire time! It was the most incredible thing I have ever seen on stage! Ever since, I have been completely obsessed and in love with Coldplay and their music. The concert really did inspire me. It made me start thinking that I really wanted to be involved in the music world when I grow up, but I don't play an instrument. I really wish I could, but I don't even know if I could even begin to delve into that. What are some cool behind-the-scenes jobs in the music industry that maybe don't involve performing?

The Oracle replies:

There's a really easy to read book available that gives you some useful insights into what jobs you can procure within the business.

How To Make It In The Music Business, written by Sin Pattenden is concise, practical and good value. Obviously there are many more as well as articles online.

You can buy Sin's book on Amazon as well as in shops.

Q. Could you please tell me what part Chris sings in Band Aid's "Do they know it's Christmastime?" ? Please.

Thanks, Oracle! =]

The Oracle replies:

Chris opens the song, so the first line of Band Aid 20 'It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid

At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade', is his.

Band Aid 20 was the collective name for the 2004 version of the song Do They Know It's Christmas?

The name comes from the fact it was the 20th anniversary of the original version's release.

Q. Beloved and praised Oracle...

I have 3 questions that if you answer them, you help me sleep better lol.

Would you tell me what in earth was in their mind naming the band Pectoralz when starting?

Also... do you know if they have considered singing with in a duet with someone that sings in Spanish? and who would that be?

Last... will Coldplay come to Mexico this year?

Enjoy your bizarreness.

The Oracle replies:

The Pectoralz name came from the pectoral chest muscle and is a joke name for a boy band they created. It was never a name consideration for the 'real' band, it was all meant to be in jest.

Technically Chris has duetted with someone that sings in Spanish; Nelly Furtado! Chris wouldn't sing in Spanish himself though as he isn't fluent.

Until we confirm anything on this website I cannot comment on show rumours, sorry!

By the way folks, I'm taking an Easter break and will be back here Tuesday 14th April.

Q. Hello O' wise Oracle!

I am really in love with this girl, and i'd like to reccomend one of Coldplay's songs too her which also contained a either clear or subliminal message about love.

Which one should I pick?

The Oracle replies:

If you like her and you don't think or know if she feels the same, there really is only one song for it; Shiver.

If you already know she loves you back, you practically said the song yourself in your question: A Message from the X&Y album. You can read the lyrics in our Discography but I think it certainly is a message of love and I think she'd know what you're trying to say.

Q. Dear Oracle I have 4 months since I turn myself into a vegetarian but heres the thing I dont like tofu so I'm basically eating just lettuce and brocoli so what are u recomendations for how should I replace the tofu in my diet.

Please help me before I die of hunger.

My most sincere greetings.

D

The Oracle replies:

What I thought I'd do rather than point you to some recipes, is draw your attention to a menu at my favourite Vegetarian restaurant; Greens. If that doesn't get your taste buds going, I don't know what will!

Hopefully it will show you that vegetarian food isn't all about tofu and vegetables. It can be just as tasty and creative as any other meal.

Q. Dear Oracle. I'm in love with Guy Berryman =) does the band always put in the same position when they play?? (I wanna be in front of Guy!!) I think he always stands in the right side! (Me being in front of the band) Is this true or sometimes it varies?

The Oracle replies:

That is indeed his usual spot. Guy & Jonny do move around from time to time during the show but if it's Guy you want to see, stand on the right.

avoiding the latin american tour once again. wait, what was that? did i just hear a kitten screeching in pain?

Actually you're not right there. Nelly is Portuguese but she sings in Spanish. FACT....

The Oracle isn't ignorant on such issues and is aware of the sensitivity.

Don't mess with the Oracle people!!!

Nelly Furtado has sung in spanish more than once, always in duets if i'm not mistaken. This is one example, her duet with Colombian singer Juanes....

Q. At a BBC radio gig, Chris started playing the Hardest Part on his own, then called it an ego trip. He went on to say two of the guys liked The Hardest Part (one of them being him, I assume) and that two of the guys weren't too fond of it. So who's on what side?

The Oracle replies:

Chris and Will are on the pro side with Jonny & Guy on the other. All members favour the acoustic version though.

I'm with Jonny & Guy on this one...
