The Foals Thread

Gonna hold off until a better quality one comes along.

Not surprised to hear it's a grower, though. TLF was immediately accessible but this album seems like a change in direction.

Holy Fire leaked.

First-listen-opinion in the spoiler

There are some really great ones, some pretty decent, but no really bad ones, imo. It's probably a grower. Standouts are: Inhaler, My Number, Late Night, Milk & Black Spiders and Moon.

Album is underwhelming, especially after the promise of Total Life Forever.

This band is destined to go the way of similar over-hyped British bands like Bloc Party and Editors: bands that could never capitalize on their early promise.

I'll reserve judgment til I hear it, but I did enjoy the 2 songs we've already heard. But man, whatever the hell happened to Editors? They released that atrocious 3rd album and then vanished off the face of the planet.

Let's not decide the fate of the band already. It's already growing on me. But it's no Total Life Forever anyway. The good songs (Inhaler, My Number, Late Night, Milk & Black Spiders) are amongst their best ever songs, but some others (Everytime, Out of the Woods, Providence) are quite disappointing.

Editors guitarist Chris Urbanowicz left the band while they were recording their 4th album, and since him and the 3 remaining members were all close friends, they had to find substitutes and re-work the songs without Chris there.

They have been in Nashville since the start of the new year recording LP4, which, based off of the songs they've played live, are much more of a collection and a re-hashing of their previous sounds.

Tom Smith, lead singer, has a Twitter account he's been posting vague updates on, primarily through pictures; https://twitter.com/THMSSMTH

With their 3rd album, In This Light and On This Evening, there were parts from their original sound, it just didn't gel with most - I thoroughly enjoyed it!

As with Foals, cannot wait to listen to Holy Fire, and knowing me I'll find a reason to like it...

I'd never listened to The Foals before, but I just listened to a song by them called Spanish Sahara and absolutely loved it! Can't wait to listen to some more songs.

I'm liking Holy Fire. Follows the same vein as Total Life Forever (which would make many happy) but I actually wanted a more Antidotes-sounding album. :P

Nonetheless, quite like it and it would definitely grow on me after a while. Like Providence a lot. :)

I got the album last week, after my mate got stoned with some music journos and sent me a copy :P

So, so good. Late Night, Providence and Moon are the highlights for me. Other than Inhaler, obviously... probably the best song I've heard in the past year.

Moon is definitely growing on me.

Really like this album. It's a real grower.

I really liked the livestream of the songs and they sound so good! Some reminded me of The Maccabees a little bit but that's no bad thing.

Alright, I've given Holy Fire a few listens. My verdict is that it's JUST short of Total Life Forever's greatness. In fact, even though it's been praised in other posts, I think "Late Night" is the weakest song on the album and a mediocre attempt to recreate "Spanish Sahara". But the rest is great, with "Milk and Black Spiders" being my favorite after a couple listens. And "My Number" is just so infectious.

It says Inhaler is hookless for the first 2 minutes. Not the whole song. Which is true.

Well I'd say that the guitar riff, which appears in the first 2 minutes, is the biggest hook of the song.

Foals are amazing, Total Life Forever is their best album IMO.

Antidotes for me is their best. :D
