The Mirror: Chris Martin reveals sewing is key to Coldplay's success

Coldplay's thrifty habit has the Mirror in stitches, judging by the article in their online newspaper this morning. It reads:

We couldn't help cracking up when we heard Coldplay secret to their success - sewing. They've sold 34.6 million albums and top the rock rich list, but the thrifty lot don't care about their image or waste their wonga on designer threads.

Instead, the millionaire rock stars like nothing better than getting behind their sewing machines for a good stitch and bitch. And Chris Martin reckons it's what keeps the group so tight-knit. "Making clothes together in our studio makes us feel complete. We probably sound like a group of grannies in a knitting circle but it's the truth and it gives us some control over our visual identity."

It's certainly an interesting thread to their success. For while other rock 'n' roll bands devour the mini-bar or trash the room while staying in hotels on tour, the clean-living musos seek out the needle and cotton. "We see if they have a sewing kit in the amenities draw in case we feel inspired," says Chris.

"When you are a big band and everyone is taking shots at you, the more things you can do together the better.

It's classic Chris. It's done to tease the critics.

I heard an equally funny one on the radio on Saturday: "I don't like to trash hotel rooms because I used to clean them". It produced the intended response from the DJ: "Chris Martin: sooo rock and roll"

He then went on to say "there's nothing worse as a cleaner than arriving at a hotel room that's been trashed. Makes you want to go on your tea break".

Chris knows how to play his critics - and audience. I think his nickname should be "Pied Piper" :)

Yup, they do an interview in 2003 and in 2008 the paper has a huge piece on it :P

I also love how they STILL haven't got Chris' sense of humour yet :dozey:

Yes, you get the impression Chris is having the last laugh chuckling away to himself somewhere.

He plays up to the image the press have of him time and again and they STILL don't get it!

Coldplay Sew their clothes!

^^^ Oh I totally agree!

I think the band really enjoy the fact that they made their own spiffy outfits (even if it's just for a laugh and isn't true)

In this interview Chris says: "I really like wearing these clothes...it makes me feel...good." :nice:

It also features the lovely Jonny Buckland

and Will who says that another band (Dragon Ash) also used Delacroix's painting.

And Guy was the one who thought of hand-making their own clothes.... the little fashion king haha. :crown:

tee hee :nice:

i love how after all these years, the tabloids are still clueless to the way chris deals with them. i bet he gets a real laugh out of telling them these things and then seeing how they run with them. i know i would.

Chris is far more intelligent than they realise or understand. You don't just get a 1st class degree by accident: you need to really bright.

Chris knows exactly what he's doing with these stories, and I'm sure he laughs a lot later about it.

I'm not sure that they did make their costumes: I think it was a joke all along!

Exactly!!It's all irony, truth, joke thing mixed together. And it's brilliant. But tabloids are not smart enough to understand the band's wittiness and dry humour
