Albums of the Year: 2008

I would exclude Coldplay's album from the running.

Also what are your rules on very low-key 2007 releases getting re-released in 2008?

for example: MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

^ yeah I was wondering about MGMT as well.

And I agree with excluding Coldplay......since its a Coldplay forum....

But it doesnt' matter to me that much.

And album would count if it was originally released between December 1st 2007 and the deadline (early December 2008). I'm thinking of breaking with tradition a bit more and pushing it back to November 1st 2007, just because so many things surface later. What do you guys think?

MGMT: Released October 2, 2007 (digital) January 22, 2008 (retail) That's a tough one. I think we're at the point where digital releases should count. On the other hand, no one knew about it, and it was physically released in January.

Bon Iver - officially released in 2008. Self-released in 2007 but not known about, not voted for, and virtually inaccessible. I'm inclined to allow it since it was a fresh release when he joined a label.

I guess the deciding factor for albums like that where they were arguably released in 2008 is whether they were voted for in 2007. Since neither received a single vote last year, I'd say go for it.

On Coldplay: Yes, it is a little unfair. We might as well crown it album of the year already. But there are plenty of people who wouldn't normally write a list who will come up with at least 4 other bands just to be able to vote for Coldplay, so I guess leaving them in the vote will be a worthwhile incentive.

How about this: If Coldplay win, I'll shift everything up a spot so that there's a separate number one, and just name VLV "King of the Board" or some such thing, but... If Coldplay doesn't win, it will be interesting enough a result to just leave alone.

My top five, in order are:

1 - Viva La Vida, Coldplay

2 - Vampire Weekend, Vampire Weekend

3 - Oracular Spectacular, MGMT (if it's allowed)

4 - The Seldom Seen Kid, Elbow

5 - Angles, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip

Not a good year for female artists...

Sounds fair Mo.

Maybe on the first page we can have a list of albums from 2007 that will be eligible. (digital releases, etc, however you decide it)

heres mine so far i guess

1. coldplay- viva la vida or death and all his friends

2. Fleet foxes- fleet foxes

3. kings of leon- only by the night

4. death cab for cutie- narrow stairs

5. city and colour- bring me your love

20. gnarls barkley- the odd couple

21. razorlight- slipway fires

22. sigur ros- Með Suð í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust

hmmmm. Well I voted for MGMT and Coldplay. I will understand if MGMT is eliminated from the competition based on its original digital release date, somewhat....

As for Coldplay, I think it should be allowed as not everyone may feel its worthy:dozey:. It meets the criteria irregardless and even though this is a fan forum, we have waited so many years since X&Y that it wouldn't be right not to include it. Viva is one of the best of 2008 for me in any forum I would post such a list in. Just my 2 cents.

Best of 2008

1. The Seldom Seen Kid - Elbow

2. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes

3. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

4. Viva La Vida - Coldplay

5. Me› su› í eyrum vi› spilum endalaust - Sigur Ros

6. The Midnight Organ Fight - Frightened Rabbit

7. Only By The Night - Kings of Leon

8. A Hundred Million Suns - Snow Patrol

9. Thirteens - Leona Naess

10. Wanderlust - Gavin Rossdale

11. Do You Like Rock Music? - British Sea Power

12. Flight of the Conchords - Flight of the Conchords

If EPs counted, and I think they should, then I'd include:

6. All We All Forgotten EP - Paper Route

12. From the Womb to Hollywood EP - Permanent Ability

15. Prospekt's March EP - Coldplay

I decided to change it around a bit.

I like your list. It has introduced me to artists I was unaware of.

MGMT- Their album is making many year endlists on other sites like rateyourmusic.com. I say allow it.

Couple more questionable albums:

Tom Baxter - Skybound

I believe it was self-released last year on sale at his shows but not on general sale

I Am Kloot - Play Moolah Rouge

Again it was available for sale at gigs late last year but not on general sale

MGMT is fine say I- no one voted for it last year, and it was physically released this year. Final answer.

I would really like some feedback on how to handle iffy year-end releases like that though.

My ideas:

- I'd say anything released after December 15th 2007 is automatically allowed, because that 's when the poll closed.

- Split digital 2007/physical 2008 releases are allowed IF no one voted for it in the 2007 poll

- Previously unknown releases from November and December 2007, especially with split release dates (eg. December UK, February US) may be allowed on a case-by-case basis IF NO ONE VOTED FOR THEM LAST YEAR. This one I would really like feedback on because it goes against past years' rules, but so many of THE big albums from new artists seem to fall into this category.

In the interests of full disclosure, Burial's Untrue was released November 5th, 2007, was never voted for, could count in the 3rd category, and would be near the top of my list if allowed. I would never be the one to call that, though.

Dave? Anyone? Thoughts please? :D

Skybound was officially released January 7th from what I'm looking at. I wouldn't worry about a few homemade albums at concerts unless you voted for it last year.

I Am Kloot- again, unless you voted for it last year, I wouldn't worry about a special concert edition. It was released April 14th.

I really need to listen to those guys sometime... I love that video of theirs with Chris Eccleston. :nice: Makes me grin like an idiot. Know a good place to start?

bump, just curious as to what you guys like
Thanks for the bump. Have you checked out the 2006 and 2007 master lists yet? There's a link in the first post. We also put together a favorite albums of all-time list a couple of years ago. It should be around here somewhere. Here it is: voting thread: http://www.coldplaying.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37354 Results thread: http://www.coldplaying.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38820&highlight=albums Wow my tastes have changed... :stunned:

Is it okay to edit our lists or would it be better to make a new post with edited list?

^edit your lists... I'll start putting links in the first post soon... hopefully tomorrow.

Can we decide on MGMT please?

List updated. It's a long one.

Good list. :)

Yeah I checked them out. great lists! These kinds of lists are the best way to find out about new music for me. Or something I have missed. Waiting to see what others like

I have a problem, trying to narrow my list down to 25 albums and placing them in order.

But apart from that I have 4 albums battling it out for number 1

A note on The Corrections' Repeat After Me.

It has not been officially released yet (due to label shenanigans) but promos have been in circulation for about three months now. Will we allow it?

There'll be at least a four-way tie at the top come December for me.

David, cant wait to see what they are. Just load em up so we can see what you got

Last year you had the Little Flames album which never really got an official release as it was pulled when the band spilt in the chart.

It's still possible that it could get released between now and December. You're allowing it anyway?

I will make this a sticky when that Coldplayers Favourite song stuff is finished with (even though it looks like it's going nowhere)

Which ones might those be? Fleet Foxes, Elbow, Bon Iver among them?

Currently, the 4 albums fighting for number 1 which I can't separate out at the moment are:

Elbow, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes & Seth Lakeman

The 5th album which isn't allowed for being a 2007 album is Capitan Melao's Lagrima
