The Hoosiers (their vocalist is fantastic)

The Mars Volta (they should be the world's n°1 band but they're almost unknown)

 

About what you wrote, NeSs1776, I agree about Oasis (totally), but not about Radiohead and Pink Floyd (at all). The problem with those two bands if that if you don't put yourself a hundred percent into their music, you really don't get what makes them so special.

Well, ofcourse there bands that aren't scoring hits (like The Arcade Fire), but can you call them underrated? Most people are very positive about them, but they are just not so popular. Does that mean that they are underrated?

 

You can consider a band like Coldplay both underrated and overrated. There are lots of Coldplay-lovers but also lots of Coldplay-haters.

Have you heard Rainbow Chaser or Pentecost Hotel?

 

I believe if you mention them they should be great songs, really, but I doubt two or even ten great and deep and meaningful songs (if you can find them) can change the opinion I made listening to about fifty of them... :(

John Mayer might be our generations SRV but John Frusciante is our generations Hendrix(or at least the more rocky side of Hendrix) both are insanely talented and great though, and while I personally like JF more I admire them both as musicians.

 

For overrated I think Kanye West, he's an annoying arrogant prick who seems to love sampling other peoples work.

I seem to always end up argueing with people when I give my opinion that The Smashing Pumpkins and Alice in Chains are better than Nirvana, I'm glad it's not just me that think Nirvana are overrated.

Some might say they're the greatest band out there, spreading clever music all over the world, but many bands are a lot more inventive and clever, that's all.

Pearl Jam probably the best, Nirvana definetily the first & leader of the time.

 

Most of the bands spoken of, I like to a degree. Rap music I can not stomach, sorry, but it is vile.

 

One of the best band of the past 30 years is The Smiths, buy an album or better yet a compilation, listen to it for one week and you will agree. The Smiths highly reverred and influential as they still are, also one of the most under rated bands of all time. Most of the great bands listed including Coldplay, Oasis, Keane, all list The Smiths as a major influence, anyone who misses out on them is missing out on an absolute pillar of alt/indie whatever you wanna call it rock.

I totally agree, tEx, The Smiths should be more renowned than that, regarding the influence they still have today. Bands like Muse, Placebo and Radiohead acknowledge it today.

Not in the States, Muse is one band that has had enormous trouble crossing the pond, they're mostly unheard of and the only thing people know them for is "Knights of Cydonia" in guitar hero.

I have difficulties to imagine what you're describing about the States, because it's really far from what I see here ^^
