January 20, 200917 yr the groups ones and the live act is a possibility but will viva la vida be nominated for best single?
January 20, 200917 yr Coldplay and Duffy dominate 2009 BRITs nominations Coldplay's Chris Martin and Welsh soulstress Duffy ... leading the way in this year's Brits nominations. The multi-million selling band and the Welsh newcomer are tipped for four awards at this year's event Coldplay and Welsh newcomer Duffy are set to dominate this year's BRITs, following the announcement that both acts are tipped for four awards each. But the critics' darlings of last year Elbow and the US west coast folk band Fleet Foxes have made the final step into mainstream acceptance as they were listed among the nominees revealed at the awards launch party at London's Roundhouse. The prevalence of Chris Martin's group at this year's event, which takes place on 18 February, mirrors Coldplay's remarkable domination of the Grammy 2009 nominations list, in which they were named in seven different categories. With the Grammys also taking place in February, Coldplay could walk away with 11 awards for their album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends before the month is out. The multi-million selling band are up against Welsh newcomer Duffy, whose debut Rockferry was the biggest-selling UK album of last year, in the Mastercard British Album and Best British Single categories. The 23-year-old singer faces former BRITs critics' choice winner Adele in the award for Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo Artist. But Coldplay face the stiffest competition from Elbow, who they are competing against in three categories: British Group, British Live Act and Mastercard British Album. The indie stalwarts, lead by singer Guy Garvey, enjoyed a surge in popularity last year following the release of their fourth album The Seldom Seen Kid and a triumphant performance at Glastonbury. The band, who formed in 1990, went on to win the Mercury Music Prize. Fleet Foxes, one of the surprise breakthrough acts of last year, have been nominated for International Album and International Group. The band, from Seattle , were virtually unheard of this time last year, but ended up at the top of virtually every music magazine, newspaper and website's poll of albums of the year. They go head-to-head with Australian debauch-rockers AC/DC in both categories. There was a surprising lack of nominations for Take That, who picked up two awards last year and whose recent album Circus went platinum within four days of its release. They received just one nod, in the British Group category. Elsewhere, the award for British Producer of the Year has been reprised after a 10-year absence. The legendary Brian Eno, who most recently worked with U2 on their album No Line On the Horizon, is listed next to X Factor producer Steve Mac and former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, who oversaw Duffy's album Rockferry. Who presents the awards is arguably as significant as those who receive them, and this year's unlikely pairing of Kylie Minogue with comedy duo James Corden and Mathew Horne promises to follow in the the grand BRIT tradition of unusual and occasionally calamitous presenting hook-ups. Last year, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne proved to be an endearingly shambolic, if occasionally incoherent, choice to compere the event. This year's ceremony will be televised live from Earl's Court and will feature performances from U2, Kings of Leon and Girls Aloud. Pet Shop Boys are also due to perform the trademark BRITs medley to celebrate their award for Outstanding Contribution. Florence Welch, the voice behind BRITS Critics' Choice winner Florence and the Machine, has already voiced her appreciation, saying: "Blimey, a Brit Award – wowtheworldsgoneweird. Thank you so much." http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jan/20/brit-awards-nominations-2009

January 20, 200917 yr Coldplay lead Brit Awards charge Chris Martin's Coldplay lead with four Brit Award nominations Coldplay are poised to cap their record-breaking comeback at this year's Brit Awards after being nominated for a leading four awards. Chris Martin's boys were nominated for Best Album, Best Group and Best Live act after this year's nominations were announced at Camden's Round House in London, Tuesday. But their toughest challenge will come in the Best British Single category when their hit Viva La Vida takes on X-Factor's Alexandra Burke's Christmas smash Hallelujah. In the Best Group category, they face sell-out stadium man-band Take That, Radiohead, chart toppers Girls Aloud and Mercury prize winners Elbow, who will all be waiting to try and stop them. There's also joy for pop rivals Duffy and Adele who both secured multiple nominations. Duffy, nominated for four prizes and Adele, for three, will face each other in the British Female Solo Artist category along with American Boy singer Estelle, M.I.A and Beth Rowley. Elbow also scored well in the rock categories dominated by bands old and new with three nods. Joining them will be Australian head-banging legends AC/DC, nominated for International Album for their work Black Ice and Best International Group. British rockers Iron Maiden were also revived after being hailed for the British Live Act prize against Coldplay, Elbow, Scouting For Girls and former indie big wigs The Verve. US superstars Beyoncé, Pink and Katy Perry are lined-up for the ultimate show down after all three were pitted against each other in the International Female Solo prize. This year's nominees were voted by over 1,000 members from The Brits Voting Academy including members from the UK music industry, music critics and music writers among others. The winners will be declared on Wednesday February 18 at London's Earls Court. Australian singer Kylie Minogue is billed to host the event with Gavin & Stacey comics James Corden and Mathew Horne. http://www.metro.co.uk
