The BRITs 2009 Thread

Featured Replies

I was kind of sad last night that the following didn't win anything:

The Last Shadow Puppets (Amazing album), The Verve (Just amazing!) and the obvious Coldplay.

I love James Corden and Matt Horne so I'm glad they were hosting (No-one will beat Russell Brand's hosting 2 years ago..He was just great!)

Throughout the pet shop boys set I couldn't stop thinking of this song.

So overall, last night was disappointing. Glad kings of leon and Elbow won something though :D

You know you might have a point there. My close family all love Coldplay and don't understand why on earth they didn't win anything at the Brits... but I have to say, I am middle class. I live in the South and it does feel like the class divide actually has something to do with how people see them as a band. And it's not just them.. I'm a Keane fan also, and the same kind of "gay" and "posh" jokes seem to apply to them also  At least, that's how it feels to me from my experience.

I am from 'up north', and I don't really now if I would class myself as working class or middle class, never really thought of it. Some of the best nights of my life have been spent at Coldplay and Keane concerts in manchester! Alot of people I know, all from the north, think Coldplay and Keane are posh boys, gay boys etc...... I don't think it matters, just as long as you enjoy the music, what should it matter where your from or what class you are?

It doesn't matter at all - only whether you have good taste or not!!:D

Incidentally, I thought that new U2 song was dreadful, and the presenting verged on "pantomime". Yuk!:dozey:

The Brits have always been an absolute joke. Just Google Mick Fleetwood and Samantha Fox!!

I bet you wouldn't have said that if the dice rolled the other way last night.

It's the same with all awards, they are slightly the best awards ever if the band you like does well, but are pointless and joke if the band you like doesn't do well.

Like the League Cup, last year to Man Utd fans it was a mickey mouse cup, but suddenly they are in the final and it's no longer a mickey mouse cup, but will return to being a mickey mouse cup if spurs win

In the mid-weeks, U2's comeback single wasn't even in the top 10 of the 'singles' chart ;)

It's only 18th in the current iTunes track chart, so it's not just you which thinks it's dreadful Mark, it looks like the U2 fans think it is dreadful and not buying it.

It says more about the crappy music taste of the British public (who would rather vote for a group who don't write their own songs and a girl who loves herself than a rock group who write beautiful, intricate, emotionally driven music) than the quality of the music.

Correction, as phone votes were 35p from a BT landline (more from other networks and mobiles), people didn't have the money to mass-vote for Coldplay, as they have done in the earlier rounds.

I bet there will be some 12 year old girls' mum opening up her next phonebill and saying to little Lily "Lily, why is there 100 items+ on this phone bill for 35p each voting in the Brit awards?", and little Lily will reply "well it was for Girls aloud they are so wicked mum, I wanted to win, yeah".

If they allowed web-voting in the last round it might have been different. As for best live act, the metal fanbase got it's wheels into motion and voted on-mass.

If you don't know who Elbow are, they have won the Mercury award twice. They have been together for as long as Coldplay, if not longer. Their recent album is really excellent, and they have a very niche following.

The Brits are voted for by the British public, so we can't really blame the industry on this although BBC Radio 2 have been pushing for Elbow to win, and Guy Garvey their lead singer has a new show on Radio 2 coming out. I love Coldplay, but for me, VLV and X&Y was not their best albums, and there are better bands out there when up against VLV, as much as I hate to admit it. But I don;t get Duffy, then again, I've never really listened to her. Duffy must have been getting some major exposure and I think it must partly have come down to the campaigns behind the band as the Maiden fan above explained.

Twice you say?

I know they were nominated for the award back in 2001 for Asleep in the back but lost out to PJ Harvey and won it in 2008 for Seldom Seen, but as far as my memory goes for leaders and cast they won't nominated.

Maybe they gave Duffy loads to make up for last year - they picked Adele ahead of her for the critics choice awards and Duffy went on to get to number one first and sell shed-loads of records.

I think the press in particular don't know what to make of Coldplay sometimes because they're not your typical rock stars. They don't get drunk/do/drugs/have a different girlfriend every week. They don't get pulled in to media fights with other bands... in other words they don't provide good copy for the journalists.

So many of my friends seem to admire Liam Gallagher, because apparently he's a normal guy - all that effing & blinding, making fun of people and generally behaving like a yob are supposedly good qualities...

Or maybe they got taken in by Duffy's attempts at making a 60's soul sounding album.

At least chasing payments didn't win anything

Elbow won the Mercury for their first Album, the one with 'Newborn' can;t remember its name. Probably 2001/2002, can;t be sure of date but they definitely won

Well they voted for Girls Aloud ahead of Coldplay, but they didn't vote for Duffy... that was decided by "the experts"

Yea forgot about that. Coldplay are still way more accomplished than Duffy and their album way more creative and deep than Rockferry though.

And by the way, the Pet Shop Boys sounded bl**dy dreadful.:dozey:

:stunned:

the viva la vida performance was by far the best viva la vida performance ever!

Totally right, we knew we didn't stand a chance against the Maiden and Eddie! But Sanctuary have never managed Coldplay. It was firstly independently, then Nettwerk and then 3D (with Dave from Nettwerk).

i definetley read somewhere that they were represented by sanctuary around 2005, maybe it was for live stuff only!!

Debs is part of the Coldplay family - she doesn't "guess" a stuff like that... she only deals in facts!

Well maybe it was a LIE

Just like the cake! :nice:

I know, exactly! It shouldn't matter who you are... what your background is.. how much money you have.. where you live.. it's the music that counts. If you love what they do, f*** the rest! I think it's really sad how much influence class seems to have over people's views on others. I really don't get it.. so what if Coldplays roots are middle class. Does that make them superior, pompous, lame, gay? (btw, I hate the offensive way so many young people use that word in this country, because there's nothing wrong at all with being gay and it's such a abusive way to use the word, because you're basically using it as a description for someone lame or stupid, which is what I assume people think they're saying when they use the word about something or somebody they don't like.)

Music's meant to bring everyone together at the end of the day. But I guess that the harsh truth is people are judged by their background status all too often in our society and it does have a strong effect on people's attitudes. I've learnt to accept that some people just really don't like Chris Martin and like making a mockery of their music, for whatever reason that I can't see or understand. You have to put up with some s*** from some people, whatever it is you like. That's the way it seems to be. Not everyone has the same taste or the ability to love their music. But I for one do and fans like us the world over continue to proove just how loved they are. People can call them lame names as much as they want.. they're still the best band in the world. :P ;) :nice:

Well, I agree with you to an extent (I myself am a self-confessed loather of Girls Aloud. Can't stand them and their sexist crap! They're such a vacuum of talentlessness!) but I think that the main reason that they beat the boys to Best Single was because they have a mass-following of teeny-boppers, and pre-pubescent teens are a powerful lot when it comes to these manufactured girl bands/singers. Just about everyone who's 13 is in love with Cheryl Cole and the sickly sweet candy fluff they produce. They love their songs, the way they dress, the want to be them when they grow up. (can someone say shallow?) Of course there are alot of young Coldplay fans too.. but I think in the young age group that bothered to nag their parents to vote/picked up the phone and dialled, they're the minority. If it turns out there were loads of adults who voted for Girls Aloud... which somehow I find unlikely because of the actual talent that was up against them and all deserved to win more (minus AC/DC, JMO. :P) god help us all.

No way, mate. Chris's voice was ropey.

The set was beautiful, I love the new jackets and I thought it was a nice touch to have red, white & blue butterflies as it was the "Brits"... but Chris sounded out of breath a lot of the time - maybe it was nerves. Can't be easy performing to that kind of crowd... Guy Garvey seemed to enjoy it though - there was a lovely close up of him during the performance with a big smile on his face

Coldplay 'Viva La Vida' Album Sales Rise Despite Brits Defeat

coldplaybritspa_W.jpg

Mid-week sales figures have shown a sharp increase in album sales for acts who performed or won awards at this years’ Brit Awards.

Sales for Duffy’s album ‘Rockferry’ are up by 66.3% and the record looks set to move up the album chart from 19 into the Top 5. Duffy was Queen of the Brits taking home three of the four awards she was nominated for.

The Ting Tings’ ‘We Started Nothing’ is up by 58% and sales for Kings Of Leon’s ‘Only By The Night’ have risen by 47.4% up.

Despite not winning any of the four awards they were nominated for, Coldplay have seen sales for Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends rise by 26%.

...Onto Elbow again, someone help me out here, they definitely won a Mercury for Asleep in the Back, I know this for a fact. Honest!!! Check out a link to Asleep in the Back. If they did not win, they I am most definitely going mad.

No way, mate. Chris's voice was ropey.

Well if his was ropey, was does that make Chris Tennant's then??
