Apparently Chris is overrated!

Featured Replies

I saw the title of this article, and even before reading it, I knew that Chris would be on it... because for some reason people hate him. I seriously don't understand why there is such a negative connotation with Coldplay/Chris Martin.

6. Chris Martin

For all of those people out there who think this overrated ass-clown has a good set of pipes needs to listen closely to his vocal work in a live setting. This man is all studio production. Real singers sound better live and Chris is a perfect example of what s**t sounds like. Robert Plant farts better notes in his sleep.

guess these people have never heard him live.

I don't think he sounds that bad in concert.

Although I do have a pretty big beef with Chris. He gets so busy dancing and looking cool he doesn't put REAL feeling in ANY of the songs anymore, except for Fix You and The Scientist. IMO.

I think it's because the newer Viva songs aren't as straight forward with the feelings and they aren't just plain out love or sad songs in terms of lyrics or whatever.

So it's harder to express it.

That being said I think his voice suffers on TV umm performances due to the jumping around. But as far as I've heard he sounds great in concert, so oh well.

I remember being astounded when I went to the concert that Chris was holding these incredibly high, long notes after running and jumping and dancing around. He's just more energetic and more of a showman now, which is great by me.

i think his dancing is his way of expressing his feelings towards his songs..

and i'm pretty sure looking cool is not really what his dancing's all about..

All I can say is the critics should try performing on-stage. It's easy to take shots at someone's performances, but truthfully, none of them have probably ever attempted it themselves. And from what I've seen, I'd have to say the same thing as anniea89 - more theatrics on-stage means less focus on vocal quality, but then what is someone going to a live performance for, if not for the show?? Just my 2-pence worth.

Yeah exactly. As long as I'm entertained, which the dancing and what not do, I'm not gonna care if someone misses a few notes.

I'm not surprised. I don't disagree entirely either (live at least), but I don't agree that he sounds like shit. :inquisitive:

He should chill-out a little more and focus more on his pitch and tone rather than running around, IMO.

...but then again, that's what makes Chris, well, Chris.

Hes voice doesnt sound like shit but IMO he needs to STOP dancing all crazy and focus more on hes voice like some of u said. Cause when hes live he doesnt sound all that great most of the time

Really? I know he's a bit shit on tv shows and awards performances.

And I havn't actually been to a concert, but from what I've heard he sounds pretty darn solid.

i think he sounded fine even during viva la vida and few other songs that he did not really do well during his earlier performance for this album..

and i think his voice was the best during his piano solo of the hardest part..

clearly the person who wrote this article never go to a coldplay's concert.

i absolutely love chris!

i find that people either REALLY like coldplay or REALLY don't like coldplay.

never in the middle.

That person can fuck off for all I care.......Coldplay is bloody brilliant.....live and in studio

Nobody says things like that about Chris... I will pimp slap them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

send it to me please please!! I have always wanted to hear that!!!

For me since x and y their live performances have been bad, really I don't remember having a good vocal performance since 2003

Well, when I saw them I thought Chris’ voice sounded great! I think the person that wrote this obviously has too much time on their hands, and clearly needs to see a few Coldplay shows for themselves before they can slag him off.

When you are constantly singing every night, of course after a while your voice is going to be affected by that and not sound its best, and as a musician sometimes you perform great and other times you might not perform to your standard.

But these days, society seems to be so obsessed with perfection and if something doesn’t live up to what is ‘perfect’ and is slightly under, the media and also other people, start flipping out over it and slag them off. Exactly the same when a person in the public eye puts a couple of kilos on and suddenly they are slagged off as being fat.

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it does seem that in today’s society people just want to criticize everything instead of just being able to enjoy.

It just annoys me that because of the media people have this certain perception of Chris/Coldplay.

I agree exactly with what chuck kottke said.

I may have been able to forgive the list if it were "Top 7 Overrated Dancers". But it's not, and combined with the inclusion of Bono (who is compared to a "sheep singing in a shower"), it is obviously fail material. Granted, these types of unprofessional lists are merely par-for-the-course by this point.

Is it just me or does the author loose all credibility when implying that Robert Plant has a good voice? I mean the man sounds like a dying animal. In conclusion, Zepplin sucks.

How could Brandon Flowers not be on there too? I LOVE The Killers and when I saw them in London he was quite good, but other times it has been really off.

I guess if all you've seen is Coldplay's TV performances then you could be forgiven for thinking that.

I agree that Chris sacrifices his singing in order to jump around though, he often sings over a playback of his own voice too, Viva La Vida and LiTii being especially apparent. When he sits down for The Hardest Part though, it's just wonderful.
