Featured Replies

I've been creating three educational threads this week

I'm gonna sit for my SAT soon, but I don't feel like I can do it. :\

I'm very bad at verbal part... I really need to brush up my vocabulary.

Don't do what I did, drink the night before and get very little sleep. I fell asleep at one point during the test.

I wish I could help but my time to take the SAT is yet to come... for vocab, i really like http://www.freerice.com, there's a ton of words used on the SAT and it's for a great cause.

Oh thanks Anna! :nice:

I wonder if all US universities and colleges do require SAT

Yeah I'm pretty sure virtually all of them want to see an SAT score. But there are other tests you can take i think like the ACTs?

ACTs? We don't have that.

Thanks, now I can't stop playing. XD

muahahaha. it's amazing

I'm not going to study. I've never studied in my life. Studying is for pussies. I scored in the 99th percentile on the Math PSAT in my Freshman year. I'll give the other kids a chance to catch up.

I don't believe in studying either. If you pay attention in class you should have no reason to study.

BUT vocab for the SAT is not always taught in school. and freerice is fun.

Not all universities, at least in the US, require SAT scores - you'd have to look at their the university website to see what they do require, but most do so it's better to take the test. From my understanding, a lot of universities look more into your applications than your SAT/ACT scores. I took it in June but I did really average (and I didn't really study or anything...) so I'm going to take it again and prepare myself a little better.

Saying colleges don't care much about the SAT is a lie. It's very important. It's a test used to measure how likely you are to be successful in college. Sure, some universities don't require it, but for most it is quite important.

Sit a SAT??

I said from my understanding because it's just what I keep being told over and over again. It hasn't stopped me from trying to get high scores and taking the test seriously, but I'm the kind of person who takes things way too seriously than they should be taken.

I never study. I noticed when I don't study, I end up making a higher score than I would if I did study.

I prepared for the SAT by eating a stack of buttered toast .

As people have said before, some don't require it at all, and every year fewer and fewer colleges and universties require the test or even look at your scores. As useless of a test as it is (in my opinion), it's a better idea just to take it, because the odds are that some of the places you're going to be applying will want to see it. I think in 10-20 years, though, the SAT will be all but obsolete and very few universities will require it.

Not necessarily. More difficult classes can throw a lot of shit at you and you probably need to refresh your memory often, especially for finals and such, since material can be from the very beginning of the class. Also, if you are taking multiple hard classes, you'll have to remember material from those classes as well. It never hurts to study at all. I should do it more, it's a good habit to have when going into college, when you probably WILL have to study more.

Back to the discussion...

As far as SATs go, I don't think you should "study" a lot on your first try. Use your first time to just test the waters out a bit and get a feel of how it is. When you get your scores back a couple of weeks after testing, understand your strengths and weaknesses and work on the parts that you didn't do as well in. My strength was the writing section. Math, not so much. You could buy those Princeton Review books, but seriously does everyone go through all 11 practice tests? :P I bought one, only because I had a 40% off coupon from Borders and the book ended up being only $12. Though I didn't go over it for the second time I took the test (sheer laziness, shame on me), but I plan on going over just the math sections before I take it again for the third time in October. If you don't want to buy a book (I don't blame you), your school might have some SAT prep classes or programs to use on the computer (my school luckily has both, but I did neither lol).

But all in all, the SATs aren't rocket science at all. Math doesn't go beyond geometry, so that section will probably be just review of things you already know, but perhaps need a little bit of refreshing on. If your class as an AP Language and Composition class, you can learn a lot of things that help with the writing and reading section, as well as writing style and grammar. I fuckin' hated that class with a fiery passion of a thousand suns, but at the end of the day I learned a lot.

Regardless, be sure to get an adequate amount of sleep and a decent breakfast. Oh, and GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER THE NIGHT BEFORE. I'm a lazy ass and didn't get my calculator, admissions ticket, directions, etc. together until the morning of, and halfway to the SAT testing site I realized I forgot my ID and had to go back home. :P So unless you like waking up at 6 or 7 in the morning, be prepared!!!

And remember, the SATs is a dumb, outdated test and only tests one's ability to "test take," not intelligence. ;) It's only a fraction of the college process, and it's not the end of the world if you don't get your desired dream score. No one gives a shit after high school. Not that people should in high school anyways, but I have to deal with school elitists here and it's annoying as hell.

...sorry for writing War and Peace right here. :P

Exactly :D. These days, the SATs tend to be one of the least significant things colleges look at when submitted along with grades and extracurriculars and all that. I think people are finally realizing that it has less to do with what you know and more to do with endurance and patience. Four hours is just too long, for such a dumb test :P.

just procrastinate and don't study..

so you can be all nervous and excited the day your test score comes.. to see if you got a good score or not.. and then the wait will be excruciatingly painful at best!!!

prove to yourself that you can wing it!!

I have no idea. But I got my Canadian provincial exam results today.

WOOO HOOO is all I have to say. :D

Especially cause I thought I'd do really shit on my English, I'm still wondering if they made some sort of mistake.

I remember taking the PSAT last year. Basically to get out of school for half a day. I bullshit the math part because I didn't feel like doing math, did average on that...then on critical reading scored in the 99th percentile and 96th in writing.

I really wish I could be super-good at math. =/

I'm okay at it, just nothing special...and people are looking for awesome math kids, not average math kids! I don't want to be stuck at Potomac State College! D=

Sorry for hijacking your thread, Rudy. I can't help you, because I'm supposed to take the SAT this year, but it's a while away, and I probably won't study...and you're a math wiz, right? You probably don't need help there...

My mom has been making me take SAT classes every Sunday, since I'll be taking the SAT this fall.

I don't know what to tell you about studying for it, though... I'm scared enough as it is. :uhoh:
