Hosts South Africa had a tough draw in Group A along with Mexico, Uruguay and France. Holders Italy will have to make their way past Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia as they attempt to retain the trophy they won in Germany in 2006.

The opening game of the tournament will see South Africa play Mexico in Johannesburg on 11 June.

England have been drawn in Group C with USA, Algeria and Slovenia at the 2010 World Cup draw in Cape Town this evening. Meanwhile, Group G includes the 'Group of Death' scenario where Brazil have been paired with Ivory Coast, Portugal and North Korea.

South African actress Charlize Theron, England international David Beckham, Ethiopian athletics legend Haile Gebrselassie, South African cricket pioneer Makhaya Ntini, Springbok rugby player John Smit, and Bafana defender Matthew Booth helped conduct the draw at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in front of a crowd of luminaries including Franz Beckenbauer, Eusebio, and Desmond Tutu.

Geographical criteria meant that no two teams from the same confederation could be drawn in the same group, with the exception of European teams where a maximum of two were permitted.

Now that the groups are drawn, the path to the semi-final is known, for the winners of Group A face the runners up of Group B, and the winners of Group G face the runners up on Group H, and so on, with A-D and E-H forming two sides of a bracket. There is a distinct possibility that favourites Brazil could meet second favourites Spain in the second round. With Portugal and Ivory Coast also in Group G, it is guaranteed that at least two big guns will be eliminated before the quarter final out of these four teams.

Can we change the title of this thread to the official 2010 World Cup Thread?

I don't like the fact that England will get an African and South American side because I think that them and the South American's apart from Brazil and Argentina are boring as fuck and will contribute fuck all. Remember 4 years ago a big deal was made of the African nations and they whimpered. I can only hope that there's going to be more Senegal from 2002 than Togo from 2006.

There's a few interesting ones in there though. North Korea! Honduras!! New Zealand!!!

I'm pleased to see that Portugal and especially France AREN'T seeded but that's the least FIFA could do after effectively chauffeured them to the finals. I was listening to Mike Ingham on Radio 5 last night and he said he hopes France get paired with Brazil or Spain because he is very uncomfortable about them being at this World Cup.

I hope we get France, just so we can destroy them for the sake of Ireland.

Don't know why you're so personal about the whole France/Ireland thing.

Argentina's team suck these days. They almost didn't qualify to the world cup and Maradona is the worst coach ever.

Maradona's a shit manager but like France in 2006 - be careful in writing them off. But they won't get anywhere in the World Cup on Maradona's account. If they are it will be down to the players playing their own game and not taking advice from that has been.

Favourite World Cup? Mine is 2002. What a wonderful and absolutely fantastic tournament. So much nostalgia from that one. 2006 was boring I'm afraid and in a way a World Cup out of the familiar surroundings of Europe is the best for us Europeans who witness enough action on the continent in terms of the Champions League and Europa League. South Africa should be immense.

The draw won't be on until around 6.00pm I fear so we've probably got 40 minutes of cringeworthy crap.

So in a sense, a case of familiarity breeding contempt? You might have a point, there!;)

Shearer and co saying England would like to avoid France? Not me. They're wimps. Anyhow Gaz Linekar revealed that France were complaining that they weren't seeded and England were!!!! LAUGHABLE considering they cheated their way into the tournament!!! Typical French reaction!

And mc_squared that's exactly what I meant!

p.s - Isn't Fabio Capello the most scary, authoritative looking man in football?! 10 times more so than bacon face Ferguson.

As things stand, I would fancy our chances against the frogs, anyway, as they're not the force they once were, and certainly didn't outplay Eire, whether they beat them fairly or not.;)

I think I'd rather face Capello if I'd done something wrong. Ferguson's ruthlessness knows no bounds. A good friend of mine told me several years ago about when he was chucked out of Man Utd's youth squad by Sir Alex for signing with an agent that wasn't approved by him. A whole career ended before it had even begun!

Maybe but Capello can humiliate you in front of everyone if he wants. I'm not sure who it was but while they were in Ukraine in Ocotber he apparently threw his food tray at the wall after finding out one of his players were texting!

I know the ref in the match at Portsmuff called that imaginary foul in the box and awarded the pen to the Skates because the Old Man was on a touchline ban and couldn't even have a rant about it just to see if they could give him a stroke.

Mc_squared - wasn't it an 'accident?'

'I understand they'll be drawn into 8 groups' Charlize Theron

Erm yeah - didn't you know that , or is this just an horribly well rehearsed procedure?
