I want to know what this is

Fireflies by Owl City

Boo, I can't use the multiquote thingie, so I might just screw up your pretty font. :wacky:

Whoever’s tape I’m reviewing has every right to be outright pissed at me for putting this off for so long. But now I finally have an evening without homework where I can settle down and write this thing.
That's okay though. I appreciated your "updates". Sorry for the crappy rapidhsare link btw, but my computer wouldn't upload the tape to any of the alternatives. :dozey:

So without further ado...

1. “Wake up, it’s a beautiful morning!” Fitting beginning. I really like the whistling, its just a fun, summery, surfy song.

This is Let's Go Surfing by The Drums. I actually wanted to start with something funny/weird (like Eier Von Satan by Tool. I don't like Tool, but that song is SO AWESOME :D), then I heard this song by chance and it was just too perfect to not start my mix with. The Drums are an up and coming Californian band who released their first ep last year. The rest of the ep is alright, but this song really stands out. I want it to be summer already. :(

2. Nice sort of galloping rhythm. I thought I knew who this was' date=' but I don’t. I’m not crazy about his voice, but the harmonies are really nice. Had a nice verse section, but by the latter half it sort of loses me. Not bad though.[/size']
Another up and coming California band, Local Natives with Sun Hands. They just released their début a couple of months ago in the UK and I think it will get a US release this month (that's sort of weird :D). Most of their stuff is pretty chill (on cd anyway, live is another story), so this is one of their more rocky songs. The latter half of the song is my favourite, I love the shouting part and the guitars.

3. Strummed guitar' date=' and a sort of jazzy woman’s voice. Starts off as a nice change, but the way she sings gets annoying pretty fast…just something about that jazz-pop style where they keep on adding extra notes. Or maybe it’s just the timbre of her voice. Yeah, the fast bit near the end confirms that I’m definitely not a fan.[/size']
Local (well, she's Belgian, so not that local) singer Selah Sue. I guess her voice takes some time to get used to. She is sort of the next big thing here. I chose to include this because I wanted to have some local artists as well and this song's quite different from the rest of the tape. Maybe it's not your style, but when you get used to her style, it's decent. The song is Fyah, Fyah.

4. This starts off with a really nice' date=' chill vibe. Voices are more subdued and listenable, is this Bon Iver? Maybe..err, probably not. Definitely has some similarities, though. Overall its pleasant, and keeps itself from being boring with little nuances. Good pick.[/size']
You're close! This is Island, IS by Volcano Choir, a Wisconsin band that features Bon Iver's Justin Vernon among others. Again a début released last year. It's pretty good and certainly worth listening to, though this is one of the better songs on it. Glad you liked it. :nice:

5. A couple layered guitars…will this be an instrumental? It’s great so far. Oh nice' date=' hits you with a snappy groove halfway through. Decent singer, and I like how the guitars harmonize with the melody. It develops nicely too, might be my favorite so far.[/size']
This song is from one of my favourite 2009 albums, Ambivalence Avenue by Bibio. It's a great album to really listen to, with songs varying from pure instrumental electronic tracks to little folkish songs. It's also an album that keeps being interesting after time, definitely recommended. The song is called Lover's Carvings. I would've liked the song almost equally if it had been instrumental, but the vocals in the latter half add a really nice touch and make the structure quite interesting.

6. Huh' date=' kind of a strained, whiney voice. Not liking the singer, but the arrangement is okay, whole thing has an amateurish appeal. The chorus seems too large for the singer to do justice. Yeah, most of it is just shouting slightly off key, a shame as it could have been a pretty good song.[/size']
This is Sackcloth in Ashes by Small Leaks Sink Ships. I really like the structure of this song as it's quite diverse. But you're right that the vocals are sort of crappy. A shame really, cause the rest of the song is good. Plus, it's a nice song for turning up the volume.

7. Quick transition into a song with a really powerful' date=' sort of electro bass sliding sound. Woman singer…this is pretty interesting, in a good way. A lot of nice synths, especially the outro.[/size']
Haha, the transition maybe is a bit too sudden, yeah. This is Ultimate Satisfaction by Brooklyn band Bear in Heaven (got a lot of bear-bands in Brooklyn). Their album Beast Rest Forth Mouth (which rhymes to east west north south :sweatdrop:) is solid and a lot of the songs on it are in this particular style. I'm gonna see them live in April, pretty excited for that. Oh, and the singer is male. :D

8. Oh' date=' nice solemn piano bit, has a chopin vibe but obviously not him, I’m guessing some contemporary artist. I like the subtle expressiveness of the melody, and how it sort of arpeggiates without stopping for a while. I’m definitely hanging on to this.[/size']
I'm so happy you like this! Wasn't sure whether I wanted to include it, but ended up adding it because it creates a nice contrast with the previous and next song. This song is Erla's Waltz by Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds. He is indeed a contemporary artist. I'd recommend starting with his (only) album Eulogy for Evolution if you want to hear more. It has a lot of piano/violin stuff on it, as well as some more surprising elements. The eps released after the album are pretty good as well.

9. I recognize this' date=' but can’t for the life of me place it. Kind of a dark, marching biker ballad. It’s a cool little song, wish I could remember where it was from though.[/size']
Johnny Cash! He's one of my favourite artists ever and definitely my favourite vocalist, so I just had to include something. The song is called God's Gonna Cut You Down and is from his latest (posthumously released) album American V: A Hundred Highways. I think this is actually a traditional song. If you haven't really listened to Johnny Cash yet, I'd recommend starting with the American Recordings series. Especially I (American Recordings, 1994) and III (Solitary Man, 2000) are amazing.

10. Another stark change' date=' a soft, sort of poppy-electronic song. Great rhythm, backing vocal melody and keyboards on the chorus. Indifferent to the singer, but I definitely like it.[/size']
It's Danger Mouse plus James Mercer from The Shins with their new band Broken Bells. The album hasn't been released yet (but obviously it leaked a while back) and it's good. Check out first single The High Road if you want to hear more. The song is The Ghost Inside.

11. Distant guitar and drums playing. Tough to describe' date=' but its nice and interesting. I like the verse, mainly the dialogue between singer and what sounds like hand claps, keyboards are nice too. Cool track...long outro.[/size']
This is Fangela by Here We Go Magic. The self titled album is really interesting, though I'm not crazy about all songs. It's certainly worth a try though, as there are several really decent songs on it. And the sound is something else.

[/b]12. One of the cleaner produced songs on the mix' date=' I like the piano accent, decent singer, albeit a little intense for my taste, almost muse-ish in parts…lyrics are odd but interesting. By the end I’m kind of blah about it, I guess from the repetition.[/size']
I randomly bumped into this song while listening to my iTunes in shuffle. It's The Radio Has Expressed Concerns About What You Did Last Night by Norse band Superfamily.

13. Ooh' date=' rolling, snappy piano. Woman singer…it’s a really cute song for what it is. Doubt I’ll want to give it a second listen, but it adds variety. [/size']
This is local singer Caro Emerald with A Night Like This. It's a cute upbeat song which is probably going to be a summer hit. I like the 50's style.

14. This is wonderful! Kind of a layed-back country vibe with picked guitar' date=' violin, maybe some mandolin. I love the warm calmness of the guy’s voice. Cello and piano come in…this is definitely a keeper, I’d love to know who this is, sounds strangely familiar.[/size']
Joe Purdy is one of those guys who is always featured in TV shows (in this case the song was in one of the first episodes of Lost). He produces a shitload of music, of which most is really nice and relaxing to listen to. Try I Love The Rain The Most, The City and Suitcase if you want to hear more. This song is Washed Away, by the way.

15. Electric guitars' date=' kind of neo-classic rock. It’s okay, not really into it. Not terrible, just nothing particularly unique or interesting about it, except for maybe the random lyrics.[/size']
Another local band, Voicst. They aren't particularly interesting, except the lyrics of this song, Mixed Words. Which is the main reason I included it in the mix. The lyrics don't make any sense from a Dutch perspective and are just sort of weird in general, precisely why I like them. The rest of the song is pretty standard though. I've once seen them perform an acoustic set, which I have to admit was a lot better than their album or a normal gig.

16. Distant sounding picked electric guitar segs into a rolling drum rhythm' date=' and an older voice. Like it so far, mainly the little reverberated guitar accompaniments…this song has a great atmosphere. I like the instrumental breaks, with the interplay between keyboard strings, guitar and the man’s voice. Pretty cool.[/size']
This is my new addiction Wild Beasts. Their new album Two Dancers is good, especially after some time. The song is called Two Dancers (i). Definitely go check out the album!

17. Interesting closer' date=' sort of a quiet, romantic Spanish song with picked guitar. I can definitely pick up some of the lyrics based on the very little Spanish I’ve had, and the slow rhythm of the singer. Its unique and really serene and pleasant. Pretty cool way of ending it.[/size']
This is Chilean singer/actor/poet/theatre director/political activist Víctor Jara. The song is Te Recuerdo Amanda, probably one of his most famous, but not necessarily his best. I grew up listening to his music and the album this song is from is still one of my all time favourites. Too bad that fucker Pinochet got him killed during the coup of 1973 (though not before having him tortured extensively, it's a really sad story - look it up on Wikipedia or something). :dozey: I wanted to end my tape with something really different and also something you wouldn't know. I'm glad I succeeded in that. If you want to hear more: look up Vamos Por Ancho Camino, it's one of my favourite songs ever, or just get one of his albums. The compilation Vientos Del Pueblo is good.

Okay' date=' so I’d say this was a pretty solid mix, and I'm eally happy that I received this many songs. Almost all of the songs were objectively well done, not many really jumped out at me as absolutely amazing, but that may be largely due to different tastes in singers. It was generally the softer tracks like 4, 5, 8, 14 that stood out to me the most. But then again, I really liked some of the upbeat tracks like 10, 11, and 16. Most importantly it introduced me a lot of interesting bands and songs almost none of which I recognize, and none of which I have. Thanks so much, for uploading this twice when I was having difficulties, and especially putting up with me taking so long to review (although for all I know you've already given up and posted it for someone else to review), I really appreciate it, and am really looking forward to learning who these artists are.[/color']
I'm really happy you liked my mix. I tried to make it diverse as well as including some local artists and I hope you discovered some new music you like. I really had fun making the tape and reading your review (even though it took a long time :P). In the end, the tape reflected much of what I'm currently listening to: a lot of 2009 releases (still catching up :dozey:) and some old favourites.

I'm begging for a review now... :rolleyes4:  :sad2: :rolleyes5: :disappointed: :wtf:  :whatever:

(you guys should get a puppy-eyes smiley, seriously)

So I've downloaded 7 mixtapes that I plan on reviewing in the near future:

♦ Eddie [italian Plastic]

I plan on reviewing all of them, although I'm not sure as to the order. The ones in .rar will have to wait at least until I get home, so I can decompress them. [Yeah, I finally got a .rar extraction program on the computer. It's been too long.] If you guys could PM me your tracklistings or something, that'd be grand. :)

Also, I plan on downloading more tomorrow, so if anyone else would like me to look at theirs, you can post a link here again or PM me with it. Thanks. :nice:

EDIT: Make that eight. Boreas' has been added to the collection. :P

^ I'm trying to download yours now. It's taking a really long time to process the download request. :\

EDIT: NVM, it's fixed.

So lemme make that list again:
