Yeah, RHCP really was. I had heard other songs by them, and I didn't expect this to be them. I was pleasantly surprised. Pearl Jam was another one. Again, I've heard of them, and I've heard a few tracks.

Now, Them Crooked Vultures. That's different. All that I knew is that they have a thread in the WoM. I've never actually heard their music before. Now that I've heard this track, I know what to expect, and I definitely want to look into it. :) I now find my review of the song ironic. I compared it to a Guitar Hero 3 song, and you mentioned that Josh of QOTSA is in that group. "3s & 7s" by QOTSA is also on Guitar Hero 3. :laugh4: I don't know much about that band, either. Maybe I'll look into that, too.

Yes! Queens of the Stone Age is a very interesting group. I recommend the album "Songs For The Deaf." The song "No One Knows" is my fave by them, and it's on that album. Them Crooked Vultures is like Queens of the Stone Age, but since you've got John Paul Jones, ex-member of the legendary Zeppelin, and Dave Grohl's (I  Foo Fighters) combined songwriting talents and experience, it makes for some nifty sounds.

Mixtape Review: Eddie [italian Plastic]

1. Eddie! Why didn't you tell me you listened to Bloc Party? :D This song, "Like Eating Glass" is a nice number. It's actually the opener of their 2005 debut album, "Silent Alarm." I like Bloc Party in general. The singer's voice is instantly recognizable. I always like the guitar work, and this song has a nice intro.

yeaahh. I love Bloc Party, that's probably my favourite song of theirs.

2. The beginning sounds like some sort of sci-fi deal. Is it meant to sound that way? I suppose so. Anyway, the instruments come in, and as they become more prevalent, it's not nearly as spacey-sounding. That was a very nice, gradual segue from the beginning to that part. The singer's voice sounds a bit strained, as if he's having a hard time singing. At least it's on pitch, though. The hand claps in here add a bit of texture. The background music is rather indie; I like it.

That would be Dance Stamina - Pluto. They're an NZ band, and I'm going to see them next week! Glad you like it.

3. OOOOOH. The beginning is cool. Slow and pretty, and it's in E major, which is my fave key. The singer has a very thick accent; is this one of your New Zealand bands? I honestly don't know. The drums coming in helped add something more. I like the upbeat tempo of this song; it's grabbing my attention. Also, the singer sounds as if he's very young; can I make that assumption? The strumming guitars and beat kinda remind me of Bloc Party, oddly enough. Haha.

Nope, not one of my NZ bands! I heard this on the radio last year, and I loved it.

Our Smallest Adventures - I Was A Cub Scout

4. YAY, Arcade Fire! Oddly enough, heartswarm put The Aracade Fire on my mixtape. She went with "Haiti," and I decided to give them a second chance based on that. I'm glad I did. I actually listened to "Funeral" all the way through recently, so I recognized this song. "Rebellion (Lies)" is a nice track. :)

Ah, cool. I put this on because I didn't know too much about my mixtaper and I thought he might like it. Arcade Fire are great!

5. This one is much more acoustic in nature. I don't care much for this voice at all, actually. I'm sorry. :/ It's not that he's off-pitch; I suppose it's more of a stylistic thing. Actually, I'm very much reminded of Bob Dylan when I listen to this. To be honest, although I don't know of him much, I'm not really a fan of Bob Dylan's, either. I know people are going to shun me for that, but oh well. At least the guitar is pretty.

Bob Dylan? I can't really see that in it :P

that'd be Autumn - Artisan Guns, another NZ band who are actually still in school!

Sorry you didn't like it.

6. I had to triple check things when I first heard this. I finally came to the determination that this is a remix of Thom Yorke's "Atoms for Peace." I was confused when I first heard this, because I knew I knew the lyrical content and Thom's voice, but this wasn't anything directly from "The Eraser." The comparison of lyrics helped me figure it out. I'm not really a fan of remixes in general, but this one I actually don't mind, since it doesn't alter the original so much that it distorts the value of the song, as I find a lot of remixes do. Nice one. :)

Yeah, Atoms For Peace - Thom Yorke. it's a remix by Four Tet. He's a very good remixer and maker of his own music.

7. The very beginning was very serene. Then the guitar came in a spiced the song up a bit, but not too much. This voice sounds really familiar. It reminds me of Blue October a bit, actually. Even though I don't know the song, I can't help but think I know the artist. Who in the world is this!? Can I make a guess? I'm gonna say this is something like The Frames. Anyway, I actually rather like the song lots; the singer's nice, and I like the piano that's added later.

Yup, you were right. It's 'When Your Mind's Made Up' - The Frames. One of my all time favourite songs. I loooovee ittttt.

8. A live track? Interesting. I wasn't expecting one. The beginning guitar is nice; actually, the guitar in general is nice. For being a live recording, the singer is actually pretty good. Considering that a lot of people are actually terrible live, take this as a compliment. I hear him go off on a few pitches here and there, but that's bound to become more present in a live recording than from a studio recording, so I'm more apt to excuse it. Oh wow. Hello, more guitar. I wasn't expecting that. I like this bit here, with the guitar; it's pretty legit.

Yeah, in this song I always hated the beginning so I usually skipped it. But only recently I worked out how amazing the end is! One of the best live bands ever actually, even if his voice isn't favourable.

At Least That's What You Said (Live) - Wilco

I'm seeing them in April!

9. The very beginning kinda reminded me of Radiohead. Then the percussion kinda dismissed that. Haha. The guitar and percussion are catchy. Again, the voice...not so much. This style of vocals is not something I care much for. :\ I'm not trying to be rude or anything, mind you. I can't even really pinpoint specifically what it is that I dislike, but it's off-putting to me. This is one of those tracks in which the music is really nice, but the singer kinda kills it. To be fair, this is what one of my best guy friends thought of Muse when I tried to show them to him, so I wouldn't feel too bad about it.

Fortune Favours Only The Brave - Peter, Bjorn And John.

The singer has quite a heavy Sweedish accent, so I can see why you might not like it. I personally love it :P

One of my favourite bands.

10. OOOOOH, this beginning is highly catchy. I wanna dance. This is much better. His voice is slighlty gravelly on a few bits, but I don't mind that at all. This song is so upbeat; The Bravery has that quality in their music. The Bravery doesn't sound anything like this, but that's kinda what comes to mind. Kaiser Chiefs are that way for me, too. I really like this number as well; the style is something I would totally listen to. The ending with the screaming is slightly off-putting, but I actually don't mind it.

Lead Balloon - Liam Finn

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWffacJYxOk]YouTube- Liam Finn (LIVE): Lead Balloon - SXSW[/ame]

You ought to see this, he's the best NZ musician I've ever come across. He played all of the instruments on this album...incredible. I saw him in august last year, and I'm seeing him again next week! (there's an NZ music festival, if you're wondering)

I Love it love it love it.

11. This number reminds me VERY much of Bloc Party. It's not Kele singing, though, so I can't say it is Bloc Party. The straight-beat guitar and drums are stylistically like Bloc Party's, and the voice, even though clearly not Kele's, sounds quite a bit like it. I like the instrumental bit within this song before the bridge. I'd like to know this artist.

Expectations-Cut Off Your Hands.

Another really great NZ band (who I'm seeing next week....) Still a very young band. Really underrated.

Glad you like them!

Interesting that you linked them to Bloc Party, I've never looked at it that way.

12. Lovely techno beginning. OMG, HIP HOP. Nice surprise. I'm trying to get into more stuff like this; I've recently added Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkley, and Lupe Fiasco to my library. I'm kinda reminded of the more hip-hop side of Gnarls Barkley when I listen to this. I rather like this track; it's highly catchy, and the lyrical content isn't about pimps and hoes...at least, not from what I can tell. This number is very fast-paced. Not that I mind.

Haha. this is B.O.B. - Outkast.

Pitchfork said it was the best song of the past decade, and I can't help but agree. It's the best Hip Hop song I've ever heard, really.

13. I knew Radiohead had to be on here somewhere. "Motion Picture Soundtrack" is a really awesome track from "Kid A." It's one of my favorites, actually. I listened to "Kid A" straight through and got a new impression of it. This was one of those tracks when I was like, "Why haven't I listened to more of this!? This is wonderful." I love the harp and the choir within this song; it adds so much to the atmosphere of the song. It's really quite beautiful. :)

So this mix had its ups and downs. I like to think there were more ups than downs. It began and ended with something I was familiar with, and there were a couple of things I definitely want to look more into. Thanks, Eddie, for participating. :)

oh, it had to happen. This song is so beautiful. A great closing track, as well. It's sad that Radiohead don't play it live anymore, it's a very nice song.

Thanks for listening! you wrote a very nice review.

TRACKLIST ALERT relevant to SWALLOWED SEAMAN and VITAAMINE!!![/color]

I am totally confused, because I made this tape for Mayasong and now I found out, that I received two brilliant reviews from you guys! Thanks so much for the praise! I am totally thrilled that both of you like my mix!!! This makes me want to listen to yours instantly, because I feel we absolutely like the same stuff!

So here we go:

Track 1

Expatriate - "The Spaces Between": This is a band I have only just recently discovered. They have had a bit of success in Australia and are now based in Berlin to try and conquer the European market. Their album "In The Midst Of This" is great stuff and they can rock a crowd, I can tell from front row experience

Track 2

Mute Math - "Noticed": Found their track "Chaos" on a Virgin Recommends Sampler, which appealed very much to the chaotic soul inside of me, got their album "Mute Math" and loved it ever since. Other than that I know nothing about this US band.

Track 3

Betchadupa - "My Army Of Birds And Gulls": So glad you like it! This is a young band from New Zealand which sadly no longer exists, mainly because their lead singer Liam Finn has gained himself quite a name as a solo artist now. It's in his genes. His dad is Neil Finn of Crowded House.

Track 4

Bic Runga - "Suddenly Strange": Another New Zealand artist. This lady is superb, on record and live. She's huge down under, sadly hardly anybody knows her elsewhere. This is from her brilliant debut album "Drive".

Track 5

Cherry Ghost - "People Help The People": A band from Bolton, England who released a fantastic sounding album called "Thirst In Romance", to critical acclaim I might add, went on tour supporting Crowded House, climbed the UK charts and were consequently dropped by EMI shortly after. Now, who's surprised that EMI's going down the dumper?

Track 6

Sean Lennon - "Dead Meat": Wow! Vitaamine knew instantly that this is Sean. Funny thing, like Swallowed Seamon I was put off by his cartoon voice at first, but it grew on me and now I absolutely love this track. I have yet to discover more of his stuff, but from what I have heard so far, he is very arty-farty, fluent in French and maybe even Japanese, which I like a lot, and there is absolutely no need to hide in the shadow of his big daddy John.

Track 7

Brett Anderson - "Chinese Whispers": Swallowed Seaman may remember his voice, because he used to be the lead singer of the British band Suede (or the London Suede in the US). Since Suede split up, Brett has conquered his drug addiction and released three brilliant solo albums. I saw him live only last month and the whole place was stunned by his super emotional performance.

Track 8

Jennifer Lopez - "Me haces falta": To tell you the truth, Swallowed Seaman, I didn't know you were a Spanish student, but I wanted to show my mixtape partner that there was more to Latin music than Ricky or Enrique. The funny bit is that this atypical song is by the ultimate Latina herself. I never cared too much for Jay Lo, the recording artist (I like her acting), until the strangest thing happened to me. I was in New York, midnight shopping at Tower Records, when suddenly I felt something staring at me from one of the shelves. It was Jay Lo's first Spanish album "Como ama una mujer", produced by Marc Anthony. I don't know what it was, but the second I saw it I needed it. She didn't disappoint me. Este disco es super fantastico! And I recommend both of you get it! Yes, Vitaamine, it’s the one with “Que hiciste” on it!

Track 9

Duran Duran - "Boxful Of Honey": This is my favourite band of all time and thus they needed to be on this tape. It's from their last album "Red Carpet Massacre" and when I told the lead singer Simon Le Bon I absolutely loved this track, he asked me whether I knew what "A Boxful Of Honey" really meant. Well, it kind of corresponds to the Swallowed Seaman’s username. :wink3:

Track 10

Finn Brothers - "Only Talking Sense": Oh no! That Swallowed Seaman considers this skippable is making my heart sink. I so love this track and consider it a total masterpiece! I’m so relieved that at least Vitaamine liked it instantly. It's by Neil and Tim Finn of Crowded House/Split Enz (lots of Kiwis on this tape.) As someone on youtube put it: Fear, honesty, communication and bravery. What more could you want from a song?

Track 11

Our Lady Peace - "Not Enough": Spot on, Swallowed Seaman! I discovered them on vacation in Canada and although they are not very popular in Germany, I managed to see them live in my hometown three times. This song speaks to me, because I can play it loud when I feel unworthy or depressed, and suddenly all evil is washed away.

Track 12

Nick Wood - "Beat Of My Heart": An Englishman living in Tokyo who very successfully writes music for Japanese TV commercials. This song was penned by Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, and was originally recorded by Japanese artist Norico, who sings on the chorus of this version.

Track 13

Phoenix - "One Time Too Many": Ha, it’s very interesting that Vitaamine, altough being French, doesn’t know this song. I always thought you don’t get to hear anything but French music in France. ;-) This band from Versailles sort of lived a low life existence in my conscience too, until I recently met them at the O2 store in Cologne where they played a super inpromptu acoustic set. Loved their scarce arrangements and the French accent of singer Thomas Mars. They are also super nice! This track can be found on their album "It's Never Been Like That", but this version was taken from a German Unplugged sampler recorded in Hamburg in November 2009.

Track 14

Benjamin Biolay - "Los Angeles": Some say he is the new Serge Gainsbourg, I say “WHO is Serge Gainsbourg?” I think he is THE top guy of the French pop scene. All of his albums are great and whenever he writes for other people or produces them, it is great too. This track is of his first album "Rose Kennedy". I just hope he quits smoking one day, because going to his shows you smell like a bar afterwards.

Track 15

Jochen Distelmeyer - "Bleiben oder gehen": I had to include a track in my native language, German, and the guy with the unpronounceable first name is probably the most intellectual pop singer we've got. He used to front the band Blumfeld and his first solo album "Heavy" has just been released. It's full of very brilliant pop gems and not heavy at all. Why he picked an English title I don't know. His album is entirely in German and as far as I know all of the Blumfeld albums are in German as well. Mind you, listening to these songs is a good way to learn German. I don’t speak French yet, but I will once I have finished with all of the French albums in my collection…

Track 16

John Taylor - "Fields Of Eden": So happy you like it. John Taylor is my personal super hero. He's the very handsome bass guitarist of Duran Duran, who suffered a bit of a crisis in the mid-90s due to ill marriage and artistic boredom, and as a result went into rehab, left the band, got divorced, released a couple of solo albums, got filthy rich by second marriage (to Juicy Couture founder) and returned to the band. This is an epic track about how this current resident of Los Angeles misses the fields of his native England. I'm not sure, if he can sing, but he definitely knows how to write a good tune.

Track 17

Yoav - "Beautiful Lie": Originally from South Africa, Yoav spends most of his time couch surfing between Montreal, London, Johannesburg and Moscow, where he performs the occasional live show. Rather interestingly, what you hear on this track is just him and his guitar. He won't use any other instruments, neither on his album "Charmed & Strange", nor when he plays live. He's a man with a guitar and a loop machine. Absolutely fascinating to watch! I saw him opening for Liam Finn here in Cologne and was instantly persuaded to buy his album.

Track 18

Bunbury - "Hay muy poca gente": I love this track! It's Enrique Bunbury, the singer of Spanish rock giants Héroes del Silencio taken from his most recent solo album "Hellville de luxe". Vitaamine doesn’t like his voice, but Swallowed Seamon should definitely check out the first album of Héroes del Silencio called “Senderos de traición.

Track 19.

Gavin Rossdale - "Forever May You Run": I love his voice too! When I compiled this tape, I had a hard time deciding where to put this track. Initially this was the intro of the tape, but I shuffled it further to the back step by step. The only thing I knew was that it wasn't going to be dropped.

Track 20

Wilfred LeBouthillier - "L'odyssée": Wow! This is indeed an epic track. But the guy's name is epic too, don't you think? I usually don't give a hoop about casting shows, but this one time I had to give in. Wilfred was the winner of the Quebec(oise) casting show "Star Académie” in 2003. This 25-year-old had made a living as a lobster fisherman in New Brunswick, until he stunned everyone with his intense vocal performances of classic French and international tunes. He will probably never be known in the US, because I don't think he will ever sing in English, but he will soon conquer la France. Or so I hope.

And sorry Chris...I'll review yours soon

Are you still waiting for a review from your partner??

Take a peek here.... maybe you missed it!

If you made this tape, come out, come out and share the tracklisting!! :nice:

Yay! I finally got a chance to download and listen to my mixtape. Thank you, thank you, Mixtape Maker!! I love it!! Lots of stuff I don't know and some songs I already know and LOVE! :D

Here's a brief and not at all technical review...

1. I know enough about the Killers to know this is them, but not enough that I know what song this is. I do like it, though... been meaning to listen to more of them. Brandon Flowers' voice can sometimes annoy me, but I really like the melody of this song... is the title "Can You Read My Mind?"...that line is repeated a lot. Like it!!

2. No clue about this one, though it does sound vaguely familiar. Starts off with really pretty melody and instrumentation. Singer's voice is very high and almost too sweet...."it's not me, it can't be..." like this one, too!

3. Another one that sounds vaguely familiar... I like the singer's voice alot. starts with piano and vocals, violins come in. "...Love burns brighter than sunshine". nice. The end got a little repetitive, but another good one!

4. No clue on this one. Singer has very high voice... can't really tell if it's a man or woman. Kind of electronica-y (not sure if that's the correct term, but it definitely involves synths!) Reminds me a bit of Erasure w/ its light tone. Nice chorus. interesting breakdown about 2/3 of the way in... is this the same song or does it kind of meld into another; the last section sounds a bit different from the rest of the song. Curious as to who this is!

5. More electronica (again, sorry if that's the wrong term). I think I like this one more than the previous, though. This reminds me of stuff I listened to in high school (in a good way!) :) "Such great heights..." Is this The Postal Service? For some reason I associate those words with them. I haven't heard much of their stuff, but I've been wanting to try them out!

6. :stunned: Precious Things by Tori Amos!!:heart: love this song; love this album! Haven't listened to it in a while... thanks for the reminder! :nice:

7. Don't know this one at all... interesting intro; lots of textures. Very interesting instrumentation and nice to listen to, but not one of my favorites.

8. Again, really interesting instrumentation (electronica-y again). Like the singer's voice alot. "first train home; got to get on it". Like this one a lot!

9. I know this one! Phoenix- Lisztomania! Love it!

10. Don't know this one, but I LOVE it! A Harp! A really lovely female vocalist. She has a really powerful voice. very nice! Can't wait to find out who this is!

11. Is that an accordian I hear? Two voices- a man and a woman. Like this one!

12. The Smiths! This Charming Man!! Oh, I love, love the Smiths, though it's probably been a good 10 years or so since I last really listened to them... I only have them on cassette!! Thanks for this one!!

13. Wow!!! Echo & the Bunnymen, "Bring on the Dancing Horses"! Mixtape maker, I love your taste! :D Love this song, though it's really the only Echo & the Bunnymen I know. I also have this one on cassette! :P

14. The Cure- Boys Don't Cry! Wow, these last three songs take me back! Haven't heard them in a while and really love them!

15. This one I don't know, but it also sounds vaguely familliar. "With my feet in the air and my head on the ground..." I like this one alot, too!

16. Sounds like New Order, but it's not... Joy Division? I don't really know Joy Division, but I know they have a song called "Love Will Tear Us Apart"! :) I quite like this one, too!

17. Don't know this one, either... "There's beauty in the breakdown..." wow! another winner!

18. Oh, I really like this one too. Nice and upbeat. Kind of reminds me of the Killers.

Thank you, Mixtape Maker! I really, reallly love this mix and you were right on with your choices... they are just outside what I'm used to listening to, but still really appealing to me!

I can't wait to "meet" you and find out the setlist! Thanks again! :nice:

Do you like it? I love it. It's rare that I like local music :P

Same here. :P

Im In!!

I've just finished listening to it and making some notes, but it's now 1:30 am and I HAVE to get to sleep. I will post a full review tomorrow! :nice: Let me just say a couple of quick things...

Thank you soooo so so much! :cheesy::heart:

Oh and track 20 was this:

Old classic :)

I'll download it just because you called me an ostrich.

All of us are ostriches at heart.

And thank you! :cheesy:

All of us are ostriches at heart.

And thank you! :cheesy:

10%....and this does not mean I'll give it a listen on the day, I've got a few other to go through as well.

I think I'm going to download a few other mixtapes today as well.

I feel like reviewing.

1. OMG, love track one. I always love track one. This time it comes with haunting female voice. Then rhythm ascends. Haunting, haunting riffs. Oh, her voice is magical. There, the official introduction of the rhythm section, faster tempo came along it him. Somewhat like COL. Love it! I need to know who they are (although I can easily check the track listing)!

2. Beirut? Still presents the same mood with the previous song. Hope the piano will be the only instrument through the whole song…. nope, here comes another one. And then there's a band. Not disappointing though. In fact, it is fantastic (what??? only for outro???)

3. Softy whispery vocals with guitars. The lyric is perhaps interesting. The vocal harmony is somehow distracting at some places, though great at other spots. Ooo piano. Wait, where's the piano again. The instruments started to grow in numbers. I didn't notice that they slowly building to forte. Dare I say that the whisper isn't sexy enough.

4. whoa, a surprise. Suddenly jumping mood. Cannot say that I like the idea though because I already sank in the hazy mood. I'm not saying that this track is bad, it's okay. forgettable.

5. Choir? what??? this reminds me of Tarja's album which was my biggest regret of all time. *here comes the vocal* Or maybe it's Tarja?

6. Guitar is nice. Chord sequence is nice. Vocal is promising. Oooohhh, I love this song. Like songs I would hear when I was little, or the songs that I can use to recollect my past.

7. Sounds familiar. A bit 90s-ish. A song that would perfectly accompany an indie movie. I can imagine finding this song in Juno soundtrack. I can even imagine Ellen Page sing this song. Ah, I feel good already.

8. why do you have to ruin my mood all the time. Tarja again?? No? Yes? either way

9. Woohoo. I like this. Reminds me of Japan. I don't know why. Japanese music is certainly not like this. Trumpet!!! Sexy bassline. Yummy like a piece of strawberry cream cheese cake.

10. Buble! Hahahaha. Totally unexpected. Very nice surprise indeed. I'm starting to question your taste :inquisitive: :laugh3:

11. Pop? Owl City?? Sounds so bubblegummy. Like no real instrument. It is a good enough song, it will be memorable in your mixtape but forgettable in history of music.

12. Horror-like piano. Similar mood to first 3 tracks. Regina? Regina!! lovelovelovelovelove. Hallelujah!!

13. Guitar and atmospheric wailing, interesting…. Look!! I gave you 3 facepalms. You gave me 3 facepalmic songs!! Well, at least this time I want to listen to the lyric.

14. Dance! :dance::dance::dance:

Whoa! Dance with guitar riffs :dance::dance:

Hey! Dance with vomiting vocalist :dance::dance:

Oooh! Dance with Oooh Oooh's!!:dance::dance:

Damn! Dance with solo guitar!!:dance::dance:

15. I'm quite concerned that this kind of goodish intro will lead to a beyond belie cheesy song. "you are the new day". Well so far so good. Until the end it's good *i'm greatly relieved

16. Oh so American song. That's already not my type. He cannot deny his Americanness. Oh he was betrayed… poor him. Whoa, down boy… and your obsession to the word "first"

17. :laugh3::lol::laugh4: A very, very fun closing. "Virus Alert!!"

Over all 4:facepalm:s, 3 in a bad way, 1 in a good way

I really liked your mix! Some songs more than others, obviously, but for the most part I really enjoyed it! I looked up Victor Jara because his song was so beautiful and I felt kind of embarrassed that I hadn't heard of him before. And now that I had read about what had happened to him, that song became even more powerful and sad and beautiful.

I'm going to be looking up a lot of these other bands too. :)

Good, I'm really happy you like him. Dunno if you've read my other post commenting on the mixtape review I received, but the compilation cd Vientos Del Pueblo is really, really beautiful. You might like Mercedes Sosa (an Argentinian singer) too, by the way. :nice:

This is what the song is about:

Te Recuerdo Amanda tells a tragic story of two factory workers who meet outside during their breaks. innocent manuel joins the workers struggle and is killed, one of the many who never return to work after the break-ending sirens sound. it's a beautiful song and represents a good example of the political activism victor jara expressed through anecdotal tales of workers.

Um.. If anyone else wants to hear this superbeautiful song (and some other cool music), here's the link to my mix: http://www.mediafire.com/?ljfmnniyyyq (*hint, hint*)

I'd very much appreciate some more comments. :D

I think I'm going to download a few other mixtapes today as well.

MINE!!!

Aha, Français :) Le pays du vin et fromage

I choose the live version of Arno, it has even more feeling in it. It's a beautiful song, I can imagine it means a lot to you! I love how it is so 'human', like how he says his mother is the only one who knows how his 'pieds pu' etc.... Beautiful!

Are you going to Rock Werchter? If dEUS plays there, I'll be going as well, they are really awesome, you should check them out. Would you like me to upload some of their songs? They're really awesome! You can listen to some songs here: http://www.myspace.com/deusbe

Another one you maybe know and that is really really good: Novastar, you can listen to some songs on http://www.myspace.com/novastaremi

Thanks I'll check these bands :)

I went to Arras last year cause the Main Square is paired with Werchter and I'm thinking about doing the same this year cause even if Werchter is always a slightly bit more interesting (well, not last year they didn't have Gossip whereas they were at the Main), I cannot imagine sleeping in those dirty camp sites.

So... I might choose Arras again, and in case the bands are not as interesting in Arras as in Werchter, I might end up choosing not to go anywhere (just cause of this stupid hygiene problem:\)

MINE!!!

Then I'll need the link :nice:

Alright here's my review:

Track 1: What a good start to the tape! Starts with a good base line, and a British voice comes in. Love that, I’ve been a bit of an anglophile lately. Piano line is a good driving force in the chorus, and the lyrics are really interesting. Lots of brass and different instruments towards the end. I’d really be interested in hearing more of this artist. There’s a rather annoying scream at the end though...

Track 2: French. Very french. It actually kind of made me laugh when I first started hearing it, I’d really like to know what they are saying. I can imagine that it’s about something tongue-in-cheek. The backup singing and voices are kind of funny, as are many of the noises that the singer makes. The song is based around a drum beat and occasional guitar line, interrupted by isolated talking by the singer. The guitar line is repeated more towards the end and the riff isn’t bad. it didn’t really pop out at me, but I’m broadening my horizons here. not a bad song.

Track 3: Interesting song. Starts out with interesting electronic music, which carries on through the whole song as the accompaniment to the singing. It almost seems at first that the song is not in english, but you get used to the enunciation. Not my style, but interesting. Ends with some nice asian music.

Track 4: A rock ballad of sorts. It’s a little melancholy, but the melodies are interesting. sickkk guitar solo. :guitarist:that’d be really difficult to do, I know. not sure who thought it was a good idea to put all that organ in halfway through though, I’m not really a fan of the second half of the song. It’s going on for a really long time....

Track 5: YES Radiohead. Awesome beat behind this one. I actually don’t have this song, and now I really want to know what it’s called. A really chill song, one of those that would be good to listen to while on a really long drive.

Track 6: This is awesome. really old school. not just 70s old school, this sounds like it’s full-on from the 40s. Very jazzy, and the woman’s voice is wonderful. really nice trumpet, and I like the lyrics: “It’s nice work if you can get it, and you can get it if you try.” You can still learn a lot from music from this time, unless I am being fooled and this is actually new, but I would be very surprised. Nice to hear some stuff like that.

Track 7: A really chill ambience song. It blends in very nicely with the last, since the beat includes an instrument that could possibly be a saxophone, and this girl’s voice is also really nice. The periodic guitar reminds me of a James Bond movie, and while I’m on that thought, this song has a James Bond kinda feel to it, not the action parts, but you’d understand if you heard it. Sounds like Thievery Corporation? Though I haven’t heard a lot of that band either... anyway, a nice chill song.

Track 8: Opens with organ/synth thing that I don’t know the name of. I probably should know that by now. anyway, a French, slightly raspy male voice comes in, and I wish I knew what he was saying. This one’s a rocker with a decent guitar solo at the end, but I can’t really appreciate these types of solos, though I understand that this was done with difficulty. The organ/synth continues through the whole song, which I’m not really a fan of. I think I might like this song more if there was a different singer, because the melodies are very original.

Track 9: oooooh I like that piano in the intro. very nice. WOAH waitaminute... that’s Billie Joe Armstrong :wtf: I’ve never heard a Green Day song like this. or with lyrics like this. “My beating heart belongs to you,” “I’m sending all my love to you,” etc etc. well I’ve never been a green day fan, but this isn’t a bad song. I dunno, it could use a little life. Or maybe that’s because I’m a little high strung right now. Hmm.

Track 10: really soft female singing over a simple guitar line, and then only over a....baritone sax line? well I suppose if I listened more and tried to interpret the lyrics, there would be a very deep meaning. unfortunately I have no brain power for that at the moment. Then some more old-school synth/organ and a beat comes in. I don’t know why but right now I’m picturing a medieval jousting match... Then it goes back to the singing over the low base line, and ends with some mixture of the synth and some more guitar. I did listen to it the whole way through a few times, all 6 minutes 53 seconds of it, but it’s really not my cup of tea at all. sorry.

Track 11: alright this song is definitely sounding a bit more exciting and upbeat. AH! the UNMISTAKABLE voice of Pete Doherty. Babyshambles probably. This is good, I like the Libertines a lot and have been meaning to listen to more Babyshambles and Pretty Dirty Things and such. Very interesting lyrics, and nice, happy acoustic guitar. Repeats the line: “It’s a long long way from Bollywood to Battersea." I like.

Track 12: :awesome:This is also an upbeat, jaunty piano-driven song. “I got my superhero outfit on” – just the thing I like to hear. another tongue-in-cheek song. This singer is definitely a character and the lyrics are cool. There’s a good beat behind it, and it’s a really energetic song. It’s also really reminiscent of Sympathy For the Devil by the Stones. Minus the awesome guitar solos. And the voice is also very similar to that of Mick Jagger. This song has a lot of attitude. I like it. and the last line, as the crowd screams: “Shake. Those. White. Asses of yours!”

Track 13: And of course, a Muser for an Ender. :D what else can I say?

So all in all, it was a pretty eclectic mix, and that was impressive. it was pretty chill, and though there were a lot of tracks I didn’t like, it got a lot better towards the end, more my style. I’m sure that you really like all of those songs, Mixtape Maker, and it’d definitely take some getting used to for me. good job though, and I liked the picture that came with it :)

EDIT: I forgot to say thank you!!:D

that was fun. good job Mixtape Maker:nice:

I feel so sorry, I've completely forgot about my mixtape. :shame: So, Playyourlife, I was your tape maker and I have to say you thanks a lot for your big review, it is funny to read:) I'm glad that you like at least few tracks:nice: It was quite chill, I know  So: (title - artist)

1. Ordinary Saturday - Esthetic Education

Piano line is a good driving force in the chorus, and the lyrics are really interesting. Lots of brass and different instruments towards the end.

That's what I like in this song. Esthetic Education is art-rock band from Ukraine, but the singer is obviously not from here. Louis Franck is frenchman. They have a lot of experiments with sound, and I'll agree that vocal is quite british

2. Dansez - VV

French. Very french. It actually kind of made me laugh when I first started hearing it, I’d really like to know what they are saying. I can imagine that it’s about something tongue-in-cheek. The backup singing and voices are kind of funny, as are many of the noises that the singer makes.

Hahaha) yeah, this one is pretty crazy! But actually its ukrainian rock band, but they have some french songs. And they sing about dances here:D

3. Innocence - Bjork

Interesting song. Starts out with interesting electronic music, which carries on through the whole song as the accompaniment to the singing. It almost seems at first that the song is not in english, but you get used to the enunciation. Not my style, but interesting. Ends with some nice asian music.

Well, maybe this one was quite impertinent, but I just like main rhythm and vocal.

4. The Widow - The Mars Volta

A rock ballad of sorts. It’s a little melancholy, but the melodies are interesting. sickkk guitar solo. :guitarist:that’d be really difficult to do, I know.

Surrealists from The Mars Volta. I know that its very melancholy, but its strong:cool:

5. Analyse - Thom Yorke

YES Radiohead. Awesome beat behind this one. I actually don’t have this song, and now I really want to know what it’s called. A really chill song, one of those that would be good to listen to while on a really long drive.

Thanks! But its not Radiohead:P. Song from Thom Yorke solo album. It has quite interesting video also. And I'll try to listen it on a really long drive:) thanks for idea!

6. Nice Work If You Can Get It - Sarah Vaughan

This is awesome. really old school. not just 70s old school, this sounds like it’s full-on from the 40s.

Oh, you are great! i love this song too! :awesome: yeah, its very old school, 30s-40s... I've found it on collection album "Manhattan Morning Music Memories", so, by this song New Yorkers woke up at the beginning of the last century. Ooh, these were great times!

7. Sour Sour Times - Portishead

A really chill ambience song.

Hhahaha) some sounds reminds me a James Bond theme too:lol: Refrain is not very optimistic but I put this song because I like vocal part and its esthetic mood

8. Ya Do Tebe - Okean El'zy

Opens with organ/synth thing that I don’t know the name of. I probably should know that by now. anyway, a French, slightly raspy male voice comes in, and I wish I knew what he was saying.

Okean El'zy is the most popular ukr rock band in 1999-2007. But basically among the girls:lol: Raspy voice??! ahahahhhahha:laugh3: yeah, probably, I like to hear it from independent listener. now I understand why they are not very popular in Europe. But they have some good songs anyway:P

9. Last Night On Earth - Green Day

oooooh I like that piano in the intro.

Yeeeeah! haha its BJ and his Green Day! Always young sweet bastards have this great ballad on their last record

10. Small - Portishead

really soft female singing over a simple guitar line, and then only over a....baritone sax line? I did listen to it the whole way through a few times, all 6 minutes 53 seconds of it, but it’s really not my cup of tea at all. sorry.

I know it is too tangled and unusual song. But I placed it because I wanted you to listen this super soft singing at the beginning. Excuse me! :shame:

11. From Bollywood To Battersea - Babyshambles

alright this song is definitely sounding a bit more exciting and upbeat. AH! the UNMISTAKABLE voice of Pete Doherty.

Well guess! Song from "War Child - Help: A Day In The Life" where also was Coldplay - How You See The World;)

12. Get Yourself Together - Esthetic Education

:awesome:This is also an upbeat, jaunty piano-driven song.

:laugh3::laugh3::laugh3:Esthetic Education again! I'm glad to read your words, what can i add?! their live performance always energetic and funny enough. “Shake. Those. White. Asses of yours!”

13. Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want - Muse

And of course, a Muser for an Ender. :D what else can I say?

Right! Cover on The Smith great song! Matt's vocal as great as usual!:D

Another review:

Carla's

1. "It's been such a long day, followed by long nights" Track 1 left a good impression. Not great though. Hopefully the rest is as good (or better)

2. Track 2 is already better. The vocal is a heartbreaker. The female voice is at its place. Heavenly. Guitar riffs, bassline, rather simplistic drum. Interlude now. hmm.. expecting a nice surprise. Or is it outro? The lalala's are nice. The vocalist wailing high notes. Clashing cymbals. Offkey choir. Beautiful.

3. Oh such a great vocal duet. Ascending music too climax. Redoing again. Her voice reminds me of Cerys Matthews and Cindy Lauper. Lovely.

4. Drum line reminds me of Clocks. Strings arrangements reminds me of Elbow. "All things come, all things go" Why did he go to New York? A nice song indeed. Trumpet!!! I always melt by a perfectly placed brass. I found myself singing along this song. Ended by echoing ethereal choir. I already feel good.

5. Not my favourite but it is good anyway. The kind that I will love a year from now. I like the la-la-la part though.

6. Guitar! Vocal! Divine vocal at that. The bigger band peeking behind the curtain and showing up little by little. Atmospheric. His voice somehow reminds me of Dave Matthews, although the music is typically-atypical DMB. The change into Salsa-ish sound is distracting and somehow ruins it. The brass isn't actually a necessity either. But the string still caress my eardrums.

7. Hahaha, nice. A good musicality at that. A very addictive drum line. Piano knocing on my door. Like!

8. Promising intro. Drum line is cool. I'm not too happy with the vocal. Strange song, which is good. These guys got some music in their blood.

9. I swear I heard this before somewhere. The guitar riffs sounds so much like Kings of Leon. Hey, it is Kings of Leon.

10. Softly menacing intro. interesting lyric. The music isn't that interesting.

11. Very indie. (500) days of summer indie. An indie about not so everyday story with nice graphics and interesting insertion every other minute. This is how I perceive this one.

12. The Killer-esque. But I remember The Killer don't have such an annoying vocal. Musically likable. Wait, this must be The Killer  is it? :inquisitive:

13. Matchbox 20. Mad Season. 'nuff said

:heart::heart::heart:

14. Wow, we picked the same song for Mixtape closing. Yeah, Carla. We are brilliant!!!! :smug: (but I notice it's quite different. Where's Bellamy?)
