im going to download mine now. And by the way, my tape one the one noonsun reviewed on page 60.

Here is my review

Track 1 – An interesting start with opening eerie notes. The eerie synths play throughout giving you a sense of floating which is the perfect opening for the mixtape. The vocals are nothing special in my opinion though. Overall the song is not stellar but the position it is placed in is perfect. The sensation it gives you is perfect for the start. Put me in a chill mood setting the scene for a good build up.

Track 2 – Another chill track starting with a very simple guitar harmony which plays throughout the song, then a very emphasized piano comes in and plays in accompaniment with the guitar through the song. Makes me feel like I am listening to the Album Leaf until the vocals kick in, a peaceful simple voice without embellishment which is awesome in my view. Later nearing the end of the song some violins begin to reinforce the melody, perfect. A nice track to study too :)

Track 3 – This track starts very quickly with an acoustic and light vocals, a terrible transition for me IMO, kinda felt obnoxious in that it began so quickly. The light vocals and acoustic continue throughout later to be joined by a piano which continues through the entire song until the end where the vocals subside leaving just instrumentation. Very similar to previous tracks so well done in sticking to the theme :) Just not my favorite song since the melody is pretty simple and dry.

Track 4 – Another chill track with some long drawn out violins and an eventual saxophone that does not overdue it. This band definitely did well with this track in making the sax not sound over zealous. Other than the great sax, not much here for me IMO. It is by this point that I have noticed the low quality in all the songs so far, hopefully it will change but we will see.

Track 5 – Another very chill acoustic track. For me it is just another chill track with some sub-par vocals. There seems to be no variation in the tracks up to this point, all the tracks have the exact same structure though this one had a woodwind finish. Hoping that the tape will pick up or change eventually.

Track 6 – A gentle acoustic starts this one off as well, another relaxing track with light gentle vocals and an acoustic. Pulls in some keyboards later in the track but overall another very similar track. Relaxing and enjoyable but once again not my favorite.

Track 7 – An acoustic guitar starts this one off as well, lightly and alone it plays some gentle notes. The same structure with nothing more to report.

Track 8 – Starts with a welcome drum set, this one has a little more speed and some bounce to it. I have heard this one before, I believe it is Grizzly bear. In fact I know it is as the song progresses. Never too big a fan of anything other than two weeks for about…two weeks. Another peaceful sound with the high scaled vocals and keyboards. Then near the middle of the song a synth solo stands out and really adds some fun to this track. The first one on the mixtape that I am very fond of. Had a very enjoyable sound.

Track 9 – Light Grizzly bear style vocals and an acoustic guitar. Then some other keyboards come in, not much different from previous tracks.

Track 10 – This one had some very interesting keyboards and then violins in the background. Another peaceful opening, then you get hit in the fact with drums, vocals, and song picks up to a bpm slightly higher than the other chill tracks. Then it slows down ago and picks up accompaniment with the violins, trumpets, and keyboards. Really an amazing song due to the combination of violins and piano giving it a very emotional appeal.

Track 11 – This is a good track by Civil Twilight, it starts off very peacefully and then begins to jam out with a coldplay like sound, in fact the lead vocalist does parallel Chris Martin. A well placed and well appreciated track since it was harder than the previous tracks. This really is an excellent track.

Track 12 – A chill acoustic light vocals song, very similar to all the other ones described as such before it. Really nothing special for me at all, the kind of track that just starts and ends all of a sudden without knowing it.

Track 13 – Female vocals, the first time on the album by itself. This voice is the coarse and comforting type of voice like Eric McCarley. Just the vocals and an acoustic guitar. She is a refreshing vocalist at this point in the mixtape but still very similar and ununique.

Track 14 – This track has a swaying type of beat with a Chris Martin kind of voice, paired with an acoustic and drumset till the chorus where keyboards and strings come up. The chorus picks this song up. It gives it more melody and a sing a long quality in it since the chorus lyrics are rather simple and memorable. An enjoyable song overall.

Track 15 – This one has male vocals and an electric guitar though it is still light, it picks up an acoustic guitar near the chorus and then goes back to the electric riffing with the peaceful vocals. Another good song and with it, it seems that this mix is finally beginning to pick up. I am all for chill music but for me it was just too much too long.

Track 16 – This is another chill song in the beginning and really fits along with the pattern up to this point because though chill this one ranks with the last couple of track in terms of speed. A logical choice at this point in the mix. Has a sort of Mute Math sound to me. The drumline is pretty catchy in my opinion and over powers all the other instruments for most of the track. I do like this one as well.

Track 17 – Drums start and then very light vocals come in sounding a lot like múm. It has pretty bad quality in the track and does not really peak my interest until the end of the track where instrumentation takes off. The drums, vocals, acoustic guitar, and everything else just take off all at once. An enjoyable different tune with its fast beat yet chill disposition.

So overall, not my favorite mix for me personally as it just held onto the very light acoustic male vocal type tracks for too long. Also, the low quality of a lot of the songs was kinda a bother. Others may really enjoy this mixtape if they do enjoy that type of music for an extended period of time. Near the end it really gains steam and develops what I expected after a lot o relaxing songs. A good mix to fall asleep too (which is not in any way meant to be insulting, it is just very relaxing music). All of this is IMO and not meant to offend anyone :)

Not offended at all! I would be happy if you just like ONE of my selections. I had a hard time finding good upbeat songs, because these are all new to me too. I don't know a lot from these artsists, but these..... seperate are great. I didn't really give much thought to them being sort of depressing all together sorry  I guess I'm just a very chill person. But here is the track list:

1: Future Of Forestry- Twilight

2: Jeremy Larson- Today

3: Mice Parade- Swing

4: Air- Playground Love

5: Dr. Dog- The Breeze

6: Future of Forestry- If you find her

7:Iron and Wine- Fever Dream

8:Grizzly Bear- Ready, able

9: Grizzly Bear- Little Brother

10: Efterklang- Monopolist

11: Civil Twilight- Letters from the sky

12: Jose Gonzales- Heartbeats

13: Mozella- Amazed

14: Magne Furuholmen- Kryptonite

15: Dredg- Cartoon showroom

16: Mutemath- Valium

17: Mice Parade- Nights Wave

By the way.... you were right about that mutemathy song.... it is them, good ear. I'd love to hear your list too!

Would like to download this :)

Here we go! Review time!

Track 1

Here is a great electric guitar intro in my opinion…reminds me a bit of Coldplay mixed with Incubus. Love the singer’s voice too, and the synth overlays are a great touch during the verses. I dig the way the chorus explodes with energy but remains concretely related to the intro/verse. Makes me excited to listen to the rest of this tape! I’d guess at the title being “The Spaces Between,” only because it seems so obvious.

Track 2

Another energy-filled song, mainly due to the tempo and hi-hat work on precussion. Guitar riff at intro and interlude reminds me of Kings of Leon, which is a very good thing in my book. Gets quiet and slow but then quite intense near the end. Like it more every time I listen to it.

Track 3

I like how it transitions from the previous track, with what sounds like plucked violin strings that fade into acoustic strumming. I also really like the lyrics in this one…kind of surreal and sublime, “Birds and guns, pelicans and turtle doves.” More contemplative, but still pretty energetic once the other instruments kick it off.

Track 4

Takes the energy down a few notches, opening with a female singer solo with an acoustic guitar, who is soon accompanied by electric guitar arpeggios, synth, electric bass, and then finally it breaks out with drums and a string ensemble. Her voice is wonderful :)

Track 5

An ambient piano opener, with a pleasantly rough but very articulate male voice. Lots of background sounds for even more ambience. Love how the singer sings along with the guitar solo!

Track 6

Opens with ukulele I think, which is awesome. Not sure if I enjoy the vocals on this one, they were off-putting at first but after a second listen they grew on me a bit more; the strings are a nice touch.

Track 7

Piano and string driven melody, sans drums, which makes me happy. I also really like this guy’s voice. Vaguely reminds me of Michael Stipe, but also someone else who I can’t remember the name of.

Track 8

How did you know I was a Spanish student!? This is great, now I can add this to my unembellished Latin music collection. Not only can I understand the lyrics after a listen or two, but I kind of like the song in general. Very atypical Latin music.

Track 9

Funny how the Spanish vocals faded out right into English with acoustic guitar and piano (in a good way!). There are woodwinds in the background! I also like the line “Ain’t it funny, box full o’ honey.”

Track 10

I’m not sure what to think of this one…it kind of makes me sad for some reason. A little repetitive too, though that’s not really an issue. This is kind of skippable, but maybe I just have to listen to it more.

Track 11

I am instantly dragged into this one with the intro…voice sounds like Our Lady Peace. But not…contrasts heavily compared to previous few tracks because, well, it’s heavy! Kind of epic. I like epic.

Track 12

Hmm…acoustic guitar and synth team up in the beginning, which then turns into a more electronic-vibe. I like stuff like this, it’s quirky to me. Definitely good driving music ;)

Track 13

This one’s nothing special to me, for it seems as soon as I started listening to it, it was over. Maybe just nothing stands out in it, kind of bland. Certainly not bad though!

Track 14

Ooh a language I don’t know! French? Anyway, I really like the way the horns mesh with the guitars. Foreign music is always very appealing to me, even when I can’t translate the lyrics. Sometimes I don’t even want to because it maintains the mysterious aura held over the song. Very cool track :)

Track 15

Okay pretty sure this is German now. I like it! I’m very interested to learn more about who these foreign bands are, being a citizen of the U.S.A. who has only scratched the surface of European artists.

Track 16

Fields of Eden…sounds familiar, but I’ve definitely never heard this song before. I really enjoy the dynamics of this song. The transitions are very relaxing.

Track 17

Cool delay effect on acoustic for the intro. Great voice too; love the range. The whole thing is very echo-ey and creates a good atmosphere.

Track 18

Power chord! And then a few more times! And now Spanish again! This mix is awesomesauce.

Track 19.

Starts how pretty much most of these songs do, but that’s certainly a good thing. I like this dude’s voice. Very heavily emotional, lyrically and musically. Love the line, “Where you end, I begin.” Perfect lead up for the very end which is…

Track 20

…a rather epic French rock song. Distortion, wailing electric guitars, and a pause near the end for a vocal solo. This mix goes out with a bang! I mean, the song technically fades out (very tastily, might I add), but still a BANG!

Wow…incredible mixtape. This person knows what they’re doing. Also, most of it is very relevant to my tastes, despite the maker knowing nothing about me. Maybe I’m just very open-minded and enjoy a wide range of music, but most of the stuff on here fits in with itself; it’s not all over the place.

Also…this mix is LONG.

I’m super excited to see the tracklisting! :D

So here is my review (sorry for not writing a lot and for my bad english)

Such a lovely title : « From Russia with love » ! I already love this mixtape. And after listen to each songs I am praticaly 100% sure that they’re all from russian band, even those in english. Never heard any russian music so I am glad to get that mixtape.

1 : brass, short track. A really good way to start. I liked this one

2 : Completly different from the first one. Not what I llisten usualy but it's Funky with vintages synthesizers, and the lyrics. :laugh3:

3 : No lyrics this time. I like the first 1:30min. After brasses come I don’t like. Ska/folk style is not the kind of music I like. And it is a bit long.

4 : Rrussian lyrics. I don't like the music, again, but really enjoying listen to this russian singer.

5 : Again not what i like to listen. Not bad but nothing really interesting. And the drum is to loud for me.

6: That’s better. I like the introduction of the song. And surprise, russian lyrics.

7 : Almost 2min for the introduction. Really interesting. Electo russian pop song. A good mix !

8 : Male voice. I like this mix more and more. And this russian male singer. Wow I am in love with this man.

9 : Pleasant song, sexy voice (even if the song isn't sexy at all). I have the music in my head all the day.

10 : Slow piano melody. I am not really often falling in love with females voices. But this one is beautiful. And the song is amazing. I love love love this one. Tragic, sad. Really emotional. I really want to listen more from her.

11 : Now I am in heaven. This is what I like in music. Simple, calm and a beautiful voice. This is an excellent track. Again I want to know who sing this song.

12 : Impossible to not love this one. At the first notes I thought that it was like a Chris Martin bis. And Clocks came immediately in my mind. I was totally right, the chorus piano part it’s Clocks. Beautiful voice. I love this version so much. You all have to listen to this version. BEAUTIFUL.

So not enjoying that much the first part of the mix. Not bad but not my music tast. But I really love to hear russian. On the other hand, the second part totally conquered me. So many beautiful voices. Track 10 knocked down me. And then this last wink to Coldplay. So sweet.

I really hope to have the list of those songs quickly because I really want to heard more from some of those band.

Many thanks to my mixtape maker :kiss::kiss::kiss:

@a-chan: I recognized your mixtape when I read its review because I guessed the track Failure by Operation Aloha thanks to the description :p

I remember when you told me about that project, it really made my day when I listened to it :D

 really?!! Then I'm REALLY transparent! Anyway, you're welcome for Operation Aloha :)

12 Sweet Talk by The Killers

13 Raindrops by Basement Jaxx

14 Stall Out (Live) + Burden Outro by Mute Math (I mixed this live version together with an Outro from another track by the same band).

That link seems messed up or incomplete...I get a "file not found" on Rapidshare when I click on it. Looks like the link might be partially broken before the "ssion" part. Could you check this because I really want to download that tape! :D

Let's go!

My mixtape Review:

When I first saw what you named the songs "Crazy Frog...." I was thinking... Oh gawd... but you were just messing with me.... :laugh3:

Overall it was a great mixtape and I got this 80's British pop-rock feel from it, very cool :cool4: ( i dunno, i could be completely off here)

Woah That's mine! - altho you weren't the person I was supposed to make it for  I guess the person who's name I was given must have bowed out or gone awol...but no matter....soooo glad it got reviewed

I'm glad you liked it overall - I guess I did go for a Brit-rock kinda feel, the criteria for the selections was that the songs had to be rocky and upbeat, with some good energy :D And yeah the crazy frog thing was there to throw ya... ;) it's a good job you mentioned it cos I might not have recognised my tape otherwise (ssh, don't tell anyone, but I haven't been reading *all* of the reviews..:uhoh:... :P).

So, the tracklist:

01. I liked this one :nice: Something about "fucking in the alley" and I was like ooooohhhh :surprised: I knew I was gonna like it... I also enjoyed the chorus very much makes me wanna get up and throw my hands in the air and dance -----> Very upbeat sex song, I'm guessing, hahah

Julie & The Moth Man - Kasabian 2009 (b-side from Underdog single)

Yup, very sexy, very upbeat...incredibly this was a b-side (I love when bsides end up being really good) but they've recently been using it as a set-opener on tour. It's amazing int it? I love the lyrics - I am the mothman, I wanna eat right thru your clothes :D

|

|

02. Mew, right? Funny story: I just got this album like a few days ago :p

New Terrain - Mew - 2009 (from album No More Stories etc)

Yup, Mew - correct! It's such a good album and this is the opening track (the one that's playable backwards and forwards, this is the forwards version!)

|

|

03. "Tell me why does the river not flow" DUN DUN DUN!!!!!! I'm strangely attracted to this song :wacky: I have reasons to believe I would not like this but yet I'm liking it...I know it makes no sense but...

The Riverboat Song - Ocean Colour Scene 1996 (from album Moseley Shoals)

haha This is a classic, fair few years old now. Amazing beginning and guitar riff, it can't fail to get your foot tapping. This was like an anthem to the weekend at the time it came out. Timeless classic

|

|

04. I like the starting beat... It sounds so familiar but I'm 100% sure I've never heard it before... I dunno, It keeps the same beat throughout but it's pretty good :nice:

Stellify - Ian Brown - 2009 (from album My Way)

Oooo glad you liked this, I was nervous about adding this, cos Ian Brown is quite an aquired taste. I think the guy is a legend, but not all his music is quite as good as it could be. The piano beginning is incredible tho & this song is really uplifting - makes me wanna go marching ;)

|

|

05. Oooooh I liked this one from the moment it started! "I dunno what to do, I dunno what to do..." Makes me think of like Disco era and I wanna dance

Learn To Lose - Hockey - 2009 (from album Mind Chaos)

American band, they sound so young & unwashed... :) I really like this album, very fresh & upbeat, but has a surprising variety of styles thru it. I think this was one of the singles, there's a couple of other good ones - Song Away is also quite disco-ey)

|

|

06. Hmmm, there's potential of me completely hating or really liking this song. It's gonna be definite grower if the latter. I mean, it's not baaaaaaaddd but

Buck Rogers - Feeder - 2001 (from album Echo Park and best of album The Singles)

I know what you mean, Feeder are one those bands you can get kinda indifferent to. This is one of their better singles, half standard rock fare, half completley nuts  If you not sure about this one, try youtubing for the acoustic version - it's very nice.

|

|

07. Very sweet song, kinda inspirational..."My light shines on!!!" I really like the Choir singing in the background <3

Movin' On Up - Primal Scream - 1991 (from album Screamadelica)

This song is stunning. The oldest track on the mix, maybe sounds a little dated but still pretty incredible. Screamadelica is one of those classic, iconic, must-own albums.

|

|

08. This is like a remake of a Christina Aguilera :o I like it... I like it very much :surprised: :guitarist:

Genie In A Bottle - Speedway covering Christina Aguilera - 2003 (from album Save Yourself)

heehee Yup a cover of Aguilera's Genie in A Bottle by short-lived Scottish band, Speedway - I think this was pretty much the only hit they had! A *huge* improvement on the original if you ask me ;)

|

|

09. Ehhh... For some reason I found it a bit annoying. It seems like something I would play when I mad and trying to trash my room from the rage hahahah!

I'll Give You Sympathy - The Rascals - 2008 (from album Rascalize)

*sigh* I'm sure there's only me on the whole planet that likes The Rascals :P Miles Kane's (of Last Shadow Puppets fame) other previous band, he's since gone solo, so this was their only album and it wasn't much of a hit. It's kinda grungey and dirty, personally I like it way better than any Arctic Monkeys album but...it's just me on that one hahaha :)

|

|

10. I WANTED TO SHOOT THE SINGER there for a little while but then all of the sudden (!) I started to like the song... And I found myself nodding my head along to it wishing I knew the lyrics so I could sing along xD

Papillon - The Airborne Toxic Event - 2008 (from album The Airborne Toxic Event)

heehee I know what you mean about the guy's voice..bit droney, bit intense...very American. I like this album tho some of the songs get a bit morose. Listen to Sometime Around Midnight tho - it's beautiful.

|

|

11. Hmm... interesting song, but I didn't like this one very much

Dreaming Of You - The Coral - 2002 (from album The Coral)

Ahhh, The Coral....much underated/underloved band. I just think their style and influences are incredibly varied, but they can be a little hit & miss. One of their early ones :shame: sorry you didn't like it..

|

|

12. Kinda soothing music, AAAAAaahhh oh oh oh!! I like it :wideeyed: Really awesome song :D :D

Action/Reaction - Choir Of Young Believers - 2009 (from album This Is For The White In Your Eyes)

These are great, saw them supporting Mew last November & loved them. Another Danish band but the singer/songwriter is half Greek too. Very beardy folk, lots of cello. Try looking for Why Must It Always Be This Way or Next Summer...both gorgeous songs :)

|

|

13. The lead singer was sorta Fleet Fox-like but the music was completely different, nevertheless, I enjoyed the song very much :nice:

Cards & Quarters - Local Natives - 2009 (from album Gorilla Manor)

I saw a blog post somewhere that likened them to the Fleet Foxes and as there are a few other bands I've liked with FF comparsions, I thought I'd give these a listen too - was not disappointed. It's a fantastic album, really good. This one was instantly my favourite track off the album (digging the percussion), but really they are all good. Kind of Fleet Foxes meets Simon & Garfunkel. Can't reccommend it enough.

|

|

14. Ooh! an acoustic guitar!...and WHOOOAAA! I <3d this song :D it's really upbeat and fun and :awesome:

Don't Look Back Into The Sun - The View covering The Libertines - 2003 (from compilation album Radio 1 Est. 1967)

Not a big fan of The Libertines & I find The View a bit hit & miss, but this cover version is fantastic. Starts quite mellow and then kicks off and then gets really wild by the end.

|

|

15. Meh. I didn't like it... at all...

Processed Waterfall - Kasabian vs. The Stone Roses - 2005 (from Green Street Hooligans soundtrack)

Waaaah. I adore this track, but I guess it's quite an aquired taste. Two of my fave bands combined into one song! The lyrics of Processed Beats by Kasabian added to the music of the very superb Waterfall by The Stone Roses. Listen to both these songs individually cos they are genious.

|

|

16. I think I know what this is... I've heard it before... omg ...omg ...It's Oasis :), right?! Omg... I love this song... I dunno if I have it... it's quiet beautiful, The Masterplan <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 Wonderful way to end the mixtape!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Masterplan - Oasis - 1995 (originally b-side from Wonderwall single, also appears on b-side compilation album The Masterplan)

Yeah, you got it. I kinda went off Oasis after the first few albums, but I still maintain this is the best song they've ever done. And it's got to be the best b-side ever too. (I had the Wonderwall single at the time and played this track more than I played the A-side) Thought it made the perfect closer.
