It teaches you that anything that steps outside a certain 'normal' parameter must be met with hostility and suspicion. It's preys on sad people because it plays on their obvious emotional instability, THEIR FEAR. If they can pump you full of fear you, too can pretend you sit with them on the moral high ground because you're that insecure you need a tabloid newspaper to tell you what to think, what to feel, what to love, what to hate. It suppresses any independant thought.
