The Music Video

Featured Replies

The other day on the bus....I was just wondering about the power of the Music Video!

You see, recently, I just caught the video of 'Smile Like You Mean It' by The Killers, I already knew the song and liked it but after the video I have found I like it a lot more and have been listening to it loads. I just think it's a brilliant video and has made me appreciate the song more.

On the other hand, I have to admit that watching the 'Life In Technicolor ii' video, it put me off the song, which I'm annoyed about. I loved the song before hand and, although the video is very clever, It somehow put me off the song...

This has happened for many other songs as well.

So...I'm just wondering. What do you think about the power of 'The Music Video?'

I think the music video is a powerful medium. To bad it's dead.

That happens to me too, sometimes I listen to songs on the radio and I don't really care for them, but when I watch the video I start liking the song :) That happened with Violet Hill for example :nice:

Holy Crap! The exact same thing happened to me! :cheesy: I always have to think about the mountains, the snow and the overall calm atmosphere of that video and that's great :D

how?

Back in the day, every single used to be supported by a music video. Today, several artists won't even invest the money in the production. There's not the central format (i.e. MTV) today that supports music videos. You'll still get them from pop artists, but several rock bands stay away from the music video altogether.

The only bands/singers (e.g. Lady Gargoyle) that need videos to sell their product are the ones whose product is sub-standard in the first place.

Rock bands generally don't need videos as their songs speak for themselves.;)

That's the case with Coldplay. I've not even seen all their videos, and in nearly all cases I've heard the songs before seeing any vids, so the vids have been pretty irrelevant.

The only video which was probably important for Coldplay was the one for "Yellow", as it helped break them globally.

I get what you're saying, but I don't think it's died completely. Nowadays rock bands use the music video as more of an art, then just a thing to put on the tv. Obviously for Pop artists it is still going strong.

What do you guys think about what MGMT have done with their latest album? They haven't released 'singles' but they have released a few music videos!

Obviously for Pop artists it is still going strong.

Yes, because most pop music doesn't work without "visual assistance", sadly.:dozey:

This. And the music video for a song has on more than one occasion changed my opinion of a song. I don't know why though. .

Gone are the days at waiting around for your favourite music video to come onto the TV, thanks to Youtube.

Although I do admit, putting Q/MTV Rocks on the tv is a good way to pass the time when your doing something else
