If there was 100% proof there was no afterlife/heaven would the world be a safer or more peaceful pl

it's a different topic reilly. that one is about the current state of the world as well as the past. this one is more of a speculative thread on what might the world be like if there was no afterlife (not saying no religion, because people would continue to have their own beliefs).

I personally think it would make the world safer. There are too many areas of the world where there are too many conflicts based of religious factions killing each other over their beliefs. I think that if people knew that everything wasn't real maybe it would make people see how ridiculous and stupid it is to be fighting. If people knew that there was no afterlife I think they would also focus much more time on making the most of their lives. I'd like to think that human kind would band together especially if we realized that we are completely alone.

At the same time I can understand why it make the world less safe because some people might be more likely to do evil things, knowing that there might not be any consequences when they died.

Now as Greg pointed out there may be anarchy. Though I can see that being a possibility I feel that since there are already rules and laws in place that people would continue to follow those laws and rules because face it... humans are not ones that like to change their lifestyles overall.

I think also it would make people really reevaluate their lives a lot, especially those who follow things like the bible to heart.

Absolutely not. A certain man uses religion as a cover to implement control and power over others. If you removed religion completely from the world then man would just use another excuse to try and create war and mobilise support for it. In fact what many people perceive to be "religious wars" in todays world couldn't be more wrong. Take Al Qaeda for example. Osama Bin Laden stated that Al Qaeda's campaign was a religious duty. However it's clear to see it is not. It is one that is clearly fighting ideology, the opposition of certain Arab regimes and the presence of the US and the West in the middle east. Not religious at all. There are so few wars out there that are religious. While people say they are the reality is they are fought on nationalistic/territorial foundations. Religion is not central to an unpeaceful world. So in my opinion the world most definitely would not be a safer place if heaven/religion was disproved completely.

edit: Surely heaven/afterlife and religion go hand in hand? I see where you're coming from but heaven/afterlife is one of the central themes of most religion/belief. You remove the centre it collapses upon itself surely?

Spot on.;)

Interesting topic of discussion again btw.

If you mean it in a literal way, as in, we wake up tomorrow and it's all over the news that for whatever reason there's now proof of no religion, I guess that's why its in the News and Sport. But that's inconceivable, nomatter what 'proof' existed nothing would be enough.

I don't see how it's very different, maybe a tiny bit, essentially it still brings you around to the thought of whether or not religion is a positive or negative factor in the world.

Hell I don't see why it couldn't just be bumped, but the topic is an interesting read and I guess a fresh topic, so wokai.

I somewhat agree with you. But I think that it would have to do more with unstable nations that base their laws and rules on religion. I don't know how you can not say that it's not a religious duty for Al Qaeda. Clearly they manipulated their own people by using religion to do such horrific things. You do also make an important thing that it deals with nationalistic/territorial foundations which is true. But you have to also remember that those territories and nations were largely founded on religions.

I'm actually not saying that religion and the afterlife/heaven go hand in hand. I mean of course for most people they do, but I'm sure that many people would still continue to be religious having it been a big part of their life.

Basically the whole thing I was going after is that would this give positive or negative consequences if it turned out that what most people believe is not true, and what they reaction would be.

I also included it in this section to get more of a serious and well thought-out response rather than from the lounge.

It is true that it's inconceivable because people might also be in denial. But I'm just asking the question on a completely hypothetical basis if there was a possibility to prove it.

I could see why you could think it should be part of the other thread. Perhaps it should've. But I wanted to make a new thread to focus on the speculation of what this could entail. I'm also not trying to poke fun at religion or whatever. I've just thought about it recently, that if there was somehow proof I wonder what the response or reaction would be by the world, and would we be better off or is belief in religion/afterlife a necessity for our existence.

how would one go about proving or disproving the afterlife?

It's impossible (well as of now at least). I'm not saying that we should. I was just bringing up a hypothetical because I was interested to discuss in seeing what the reaction would be of people or if it would be positive or negative.

What are your thoughts on the topic?

we don't kill each other cos of religion. we kill each other because of greed, hatred, selfishness and stupidity. getting rid of religion won't stop the guy in the dark alley wanting to beat me up for my phone.

I see what you're saying about Al Qaeda but it's still just using and manipulating religion to garner support for it's mission. If we lived in an unglobalized world and one in which the West wasn't so powerful in expanding it's values then Al Qaeda would not exist. Religion I feel just wasn't a major factor in the creation of that organisation or many like them.

The territorial/nation side of debate is interesting. I see your point in saying that sone were formed because of religion but I just believe that they many were formed by way of a natural progression in the history of humanity. Without religion in this world the border lines of the global map would no doubt be different but we'd still be on a fighting world.

I personnaly already live my life as if there is no afterlife (since I'm certain there isn't) and I think most people do the same. Some things would surely be different if everyone in the world believed so but I don't think it would make the world any more or less peaceful. As pointed before, most violence in the world doesn't even involve religious matters. And I don't really believe that people would be more violent because they'd think that they won't be punished in the afterlife either. It seems to me like only a small amount of people still have this logic.

I think people who don't believe in life after death dont care what they do to others as they feel they don't suffer consequences like killing someone or raping them. But generally when people have religion they tend to try and lead a life doing good to others. Obviously some are not like that and take things to another level. But if there was no religion people would not care what they do because they're is no greater force than human watching over them whilst doing these terrible things.

I think that if the news of such is reported, there will be an uproar of mix feelings. And then, there would be disbelief. Even if there's 100% proof, I don't think everyone out there will immediately switch their thoughts to 'there's no such thing as religion'.

But back to the question. Maybe a little more peaceful, yes. Doesn't mean we would stop fighting; I think we would just find other reasons to fight with one another.

Quick click on the London site shows it mainly promotes what seems to be a gay nightclub. Interesting.

In what way?

I'm slightly kidding but how on earth did you know about it?

I disagree ! Just because you are atheist doesn't mean you don't have morals.

Well it's pretty famous, for a start. I'm surprised you hadn't heard of it.

Of hiding?

Definitely more peaceful and safer. People would realize they only have one life to live and make sure not to screw it up by doing something retarded. And let's take Christianity for example. The world's most common religion if I'm not mistaken. In reality, Christians can do whatever they want. They can kill, steal, or whatever and at the end of the day as long as they believe in God they'll be saved.

And yet someone who is the nicest person on the planet can be atheist or agnostic or any other religion and they will have to hell for not believing in their God. See how that makes sense? It's mind control. Not to mention the anti-gay sentiment would be lessened. And Al Queda isn't the only potential example of this- just the only one anyone seems to remember. How about the Crusades? 200 years of warfare and estimated over 200,000 deaths solely in the name of religion. An utter waste of a few hundred thousand perfectly good lives.

There is a constant possibility of nuclear warfare between Israel and Iran, also between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Over different religious beliefs. Even if you argue that's not the only reason, it is most certainly the basis for a majority of their differences. Religion has always spelled death for innocent lives and it wouldn't surprise me if the whole world went up in smoke over religious division. All it would take is 25 nuclear exchanges to make the world completely inhabitable for humans based on temperature and the resulting sunlight block out. Between the two examples i've given they have more than enough weapons to accomplish this several times over. All over something they have no proof of.

And look at what was predicted for today. Some religious genius predicting the world was going to end today and it had my younger sister's and their friends hysterical crying and screaming. They're still worried out of their minds for absolutely nothing. This isn't necessary. This is certainly not making the world better.

One last thought. Religion takes away from people's own self-worth and belief in humanity. There are many religious people I know who when something good happens to them they're all. "Thank you God" and "It was his benevolent intervention that lead me to this." Really? Meanwhile they have no self-confidence and they don't have a shred of belief in themselves. One of my friend's was told she had a 20% chance of living but she still survived oral cancer. She thanked God. Not her amazing body which overcame the disease or the human skill and hard work of the doctor that saved her. In this way, it is anti-human to be religious.

If there was no promise of an after-life or omnipotent deity people would live their life the way they should, as very possibly the last one. And they might actually take/give credit for the amazing things the human body and mind can accomplish; the world would surely be a better, happier, more peaceful place.

Israel v Iran is centrally most definitely not a religious matter. And I don't think it's fair generalizing Christians, Islamists etc into a group that think they can do whatever they want knowing the after life will be kind to them and as though all religious people are deniers of reality and are intellectually challenged for that reason (I know that's not what you're saying but you do seem to suggest that being atheist would bring about freer mind). Some of the world's most greatest figures in history conformed to religion and it didn't do them any harm.
