In an interview with Absolute Radio's Christian O'Connell, Noel Gallagher confessed to being a fan of Coldplay's new material when asked of what he's enjoyed from fellow acts this year. He also stated his fondness for Arctic Monkey's new album and Kasabian's up and coming LP Velociraptor. Noel gave further details of his first solo album High Flying Birds which is to be released one week before Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto.

Here's a snippet of the interview

Christian O’Connell: And what new stuff have you heard recently that excites you, because I know you’re into your new music and champion new bands?

Noel Gallagher: I like the Arctic Monkeys album, I’ve got to say, it seems like they’re back. The new Kasabian record which is coming is pretty good. What else? Contemporary new records? Yeah, I don’t think I’ve heard one for a while to be honest, but the new… oh, some of the new Coldplay stuff is good, I’ve got to say.

Christian O’Connell: Crikey, look at that, everyone’s getting grown-up now, people are being nice to Coldplay again, everyone’s being nice to Chris Martin, that’s nice.

Noel Gallagher: I’ve always been a fan of Coldplay, I’ve liked them since I heard that track, Yellow. I do like them, the new stuff’s good I think.

Well, now that he is releasing a solo album, he has to be nice to everyone. The music industry doesn't need anymore arrogant artists and if you want to make it, you have to jump on the Coldplay bandwagon and ride with everyone else.

He's not being nice to everyone! He's still the same Noel Gallagher.

Well you know what? I don't give a SHIT.

Regardless - he's a better lyricist than Chris Martin. Arguably a better songwriter as well.

this

Look, I don't know what everyone has against Gallagher brothers, but you can't deny that Oasis was one of the greatest british bands ever, don't matter if you like it or not. I like Coldplay as much as I like Oasis, but going against Liam and Noel just because they talked shit about Coldplay (in Liam's case) is just a silly attitude. They are more than arrogant sometimes, but it's just the way they are and I don't think they are a hundred per cent serious on every thing they say.

I don't like Oasis or either Gallagher because I don't think the music they make is quality. Calm down, man.

i just think Noel was the brains behind the band and Liam was just the singer, who was the occasional pri*k!

and yeh i thought they were kinda mates! like they did the MTF gig together, and chris went up to the balcony and hugged him at one of the gigs!

Probs, but for him to treat him like shit and say that his music is shit and then all of a sudden he likes them.

Well he can change his opinion, but still lol what do I care?

I was talking generally, not to you in particular. I respect you don't like them because you don't like their music.

Going back to topic, the fact that Noel Gallagher thinks that new Coldplay's material is good really makes me more hyped about Mylo Xyloto!!

Don't think Noel Gallagher's ever treated Coldplay like shit...or said any real shit about them.

Wow. This I did not expect. I don't recall him ever saying a good thing about them. I thought they weren't cool enough for him because they don't do drugs or have sex with prostitutes?

They make pretty good music. And Noel's a great lyricist. But I would replace 'best' with 'most influential'. But besides the talented music part let's look at the Gallagher brother's shall we. Except 1) Their lifestyles/habits. When you 'handle' fame by snorting coke all day and you let drugs interfere with your music, well. How do you respect people like that? Music first. There's really no question about it. 2) As you said, Noel has a massive ego. You're right, I mean, he's probably kidding sometimes times. But you can joke around without looking like an airhead and pretending you're better than everyone when you're not. He was cocky and he rightfully paid the price. I think my favorite summation of Be Here Now is this one by Q Magazine. "So colossally did Be Here Now fall short of expectations that it killed Britpop and ushered in an era of more ambitious, less overblown music." Enter Coldplay takeover. Oasis finished off. Game, set, match to Coldplay. And there you have it. Done.

I think a lot of people in this thread think Noel and Liam are the same person...

Not me sir. Not me. Good music. Bad other chickens.

GTFO!! What? :o

I loved their first two albums (those were my uni days so it was perfect timing too) as did the rest of the country. After that they were still very talented (of course) but their albums were average, (I'm sure they were still good live if Liam could get out of bed :P) and commercially disappointing (not that that matters, but just saying).

I can certainly deny they are one of the greatest British bands ever!! I doubt they'd be top thirty if you consider not only sales but also popularity, influence, sustained success, long-term critical acclaim, international attention, etc etc etc. Oasis never fulfilled their potential. The Stone Roses did it in a handful of singles and one album!!

U2 and Coldplay are both top twenty, probably (without counting up to see the obvious ones). Oasis would be top thirty, probably, but only on the strength of sales.
