Noel Gallagher a fan of Coldplay's new material

Featured Replies

"Slowly walking down a cannonball, faster than a cannonball"

"And on the palm of her hand is a blister"

"And she makes me laugh, I got her autograph"

Please never suggest Noel Gallagher to be a good lyricist.

Oh puh lease! That's a novelty song if you would care to check their back catalogue.

How about

"What tongueless ghost of sin crept through my curtains?

Sailing on a sea of sweat on a stormy night

I think he don't got a name but I can't be certain

And in me he starts to confide

That my family don't seem so familiar

And my enemies all know my name

And if you hear me tap on your window

Better get on yer knees and pray panic is on the way"

or

"Some might say they don't believe in heaven

Go and tell it to the man who lives in hell "

Please don't tell me Noel Gallagher isn't a good lyricist.

Exactly.

Writing lyrics is a tough business, as many people have different ideas and standards.

To be as unbiased as possible, Chris Martin and Noel probably don't fall anywhere in the top one hundred lyricists in the past two decades.

To write a good tune is very different from writing good lyrics. Plenty of people are pleased with things that just rhyme and others like a bit more.

If you want to read some lyrics, check out Bon Iver's new album. That stuff is poetry.

Damn straight!

Noel salutes Coldplay

He calls their Glasto headline slot the 'gig of their lives'

23/08/11

Noel Gallagher says Chris Martin and his band's headline slot at this year's Glastonbury was one of their best.

Speaking to 6 Music's Steve Lamacq, he said: "I got half way through it and said to the missus, 'They are having the gig of their lives here'.

"It was pretty spectacular and the way they lit up the pyramid on the Pyramid Stage, that means no one else can ever do it now."

Noel's comments about Jay-Z and Glastonbury a few years back meant some assumed he was no longer a fan of the festival but nothing could be further from the truth:

"Glastonbury is a one off, the rest of the festivals with all the best will in the world are just big gigs in fields," according to Noel.

"Glastonbury is a festival in the truest sense, the music is secondary to your festival experience, you could go there for 3 days and not see one single band and have a great time."

Noel and his High Flying Birds are on tour this October, having just added three extra dates. Unlike Beady Eye, he will be playing Oasis songs:

"There's only 10 tracks on the album. That's only 42 minutes, so I don't have enough material to not do Oasis songs," he explained.

"I don't really see them as Oasis songs now, I wrote those songs myself, they are my songs."

However, there are a number of Oasis tracks that you won't be hearing at his solo gigs:

"I couldn't do Supersonic, Rock n Roll star or Cigarettes and Alcohol or Champagne Supernova or Lila.

Noel continued: "The more rock ones I would never attempt to do because Liam had such a great rock voice, that is a shame those songs will never be heard for the foreseeable future.

"I think it's sad because they were great stadium anthems but we've all got to move on, I might do a jazz fusion version of them."

Noel also told Lammo plenty of offers were on the table after Oasis split up for Noel to write his autobiography:

"I went for a few meetings with people out of politeness who were offering me silly amounts of money," he explained.

"I didn't want to write about my life in Oasis because my life with the Inspiral Carpets was equally as valid. It's all part of the story and the story ain't finished yet.

"You can't write an autobiography at 44. What happens to me in the next 15 years is going to be equally as interesting."

I've always liked Noel and not just because he likes Coldplay.

He just seems like a genuinely honest guy not to mention a very talented musician.

Noel Gallagher 's lyrics are amazing if you think otherwise then I'm sorry your rightfully mad.

I honestly think Noel and Coldplay have some of the best lyrics out there (even if they take alot of heat around here). They might not always nessesarily be stories like Bob Dylan's lyrics, but they work better on an emotional level. I think people need to understand that there's more then one way to do these things.

YAY! Lyrics battle!

"Maybe I will never be,

all the things that I'd like to be.

Now is not the time to cry,

now's the time to find out why.

Maybe you're the same as me,

we'll see things they'll never see.

You and I: We're gonna live forever."

"Take the time to make some sense,

of what you want to say...

and cast your words away upon the waves.

Sail them home with aquiesce,

on a ship of hope today.

And as they land upon the shore,

tell them not to fear no more.

Say it loud and sing it proud today!"

"If you're needing something that I can give,

you know I'll help ya if I can.

If you're honest and said that you did,

you know that I would give you my hand,

or a sad song in a lonely place,

I'll try to put a word in for you.

Need a shoulder? Well if that's the case,

You know there's nothing I wouldn't do."

FINISH HIM!

I think so, sometimes, depends on the phase of life you are in, or we are just attracted to what we'are aware of or inside of us...some of Oasis/Coldplay songs are so forever "moment" imprinted...

Maybe this has already been mentioned: Noel Gallagher thought Coldplay were spectacular at Glastonbury 2011.

In an interview with 6 Music, Gallagher hailed Coldplay's headline set on the Pyramid Stage earlier this summer.

"I got halfway through it and said to the missus, 'They are having the gig of their lives here. It was pretty spectacular and the way they lit up the pyramid on the Pyramid Stage, that means no-one else can ever do it now,'' Gallagher said.
