For some reason this bothers me to no end.

I know Chris does most of the songwriting. But I mean. He's also not the best lyricist ever. Some of the songs strike a chord in me with the words (The Scientist, Clocks, Viva la Vida to name a few) but it's always been the SOUND- the incomparable melodies, structures, arrangements, and musical talent that draws me to their music. Whatever happened to sharing the money equally??? The band wouldn't be the same without Jonny, Guy or Will and I've taken an enormous hit from the idea that Chris is getting twice as much money as the rest of them. He's been my idol for a long time. But now, I just don't know what to think... This whole thing has rocked the foundation of what I've believed regarding the band for a long time. And yes, finally a thread not guessing at what songs will make the album or what Mylo Xyloto means or anything like that. :P

I don't know anything about these things, but could it not just be he only has the 'right' to make twice as much, but doesn't get more money than the others, in the end?

I've been wondering about this too. :/ I'm quite sure they used to split the money equally. I didn't think they would change that...it just seems wrong.

Or maybe the share percentage shows how much they add to the song? As in Chris sings and plays piano/ guitar so how much he contributes to the song is more than say Guy playing his bass? I dunno. :/

It also doesn't say anything on there regarding the money they donate to charity. Maybe that's factored into Chris' credit?

I think they all split it equally, still. I don't know if this is the most accurate source for that. (Nor is it our business, really).

I agree. Not the most relaibke of sources

But...the shares are PERFORMANCE shares...so how much they contribute to each song.

I mean why would they input that kind of information anyway?

chris gets most of the shit too. Guy could walk on the street and be ok,

mr martin would get company of a busload of paparazzi

Agreed! I don't think its any of our business and their financial matter is their business. Also, i don't think its necessary to have a thread just to discuss this. We do not have to know every single detail about Coldplay.

Also consider that could be just to put it "formally" and in the reallity they split equally.

I don´t see what is wrong discussing the finances of Coldplay. I mean there are threads about everything, from Gwyneth to the secret location of the beehive...I think we can all "handle" talking about how they split the money WE pay to them, don´t you think ?

I also thought they split their money equally. Not sure why Chris gets more, unless he is indeed the main songwriter, both lyrically and musically. I think it´s weird though...

Yes but why the difference then?

Wow, really?! That's just..well...there's just something wrong with that sentence.

Yeah, I agree. We don't even know how to quantify/categorize the information. So why are we talking about it? We don't even know what it means!

Plus, how would profits be relevant to the PRS song database?

Chris said in an interview that they split the money equally. Most bands the songwriters get more money from sales, wheather done by the songwriter's band or someone else. The whole band gets paid well for the tours, where most the money comes from.

Very interesting indeed. But I think we can trust the boys about money - if they shared it equally for the last 10 years, it won't change today or in the future. I don't know what the f this performance sharing stuff is, but if it is written this way there must be a very good reason.

Let's wait until we hear the whole song. Maybe it's something like The Scientist, you know : Chris starts, and the rest of the band comes slowly after. That would explain the numbers but not why the hell it interests PRS.

To clear all doubts I think someone should ask the oracle, since this information is almost "public" and it doesn't match the idea of spliting the money equally that the band confirmed...

Not necessarily. For instance, the Red Hot Chili Peppers used to tour for two weeks every three to prevent exhaustion.

However, they still had to pay the touring crew for being on standby that extra week, and therefore made little to no money during a full tour (I believe it was during Blood Sugar Sex Magik).

The point is, touring does not always equal profits.

Wow, really?! That's just..well...there's just something wrong with that sentence.

Well it's factually correct. We pay them :) nothing wrong with that. I'm happy I support Coldplay. I just don't see the problem in talking about how they split the money. I can see why people are confused about conflicting info.

what if chris got 19% as well: just listen to the intrumental versions of the songs, that's what coldplay would be

By now the members of the band probably have so much money that they don't care how much they get. Coldplay are definitely more concerned about the music rather than the money they make. Especially now that they're all multi-millionaires.

what? really? do you not think it is a bit of a private thing?

Not really. I mean, why should what anyone makes be private? Everyone here in the US has to disclose it to the government anyway. I'm sure they do the same thing in England so what's the difference? Privatization just messes up things anyway. Ah how I long for a socialist state. ~

And it might just be the performance shares. i'm not sure, but that's why I asked. I don't see how what I did was so wrong. It's not like I made another tracklist thread or something talking about the JS lawsuit. I'm just curious is all. I know Coldplay's not about money. But they SAID sometime back they share it equally. And I for one find that both humble and brillant. If that's not the case anymore, it has negative implications for my ideological point of view regarding them outside their music. So it matters.

I support your and everyone´s right to discuss this. As I previously wrote, a lot of private matters get discussed in this forum anyway, so why making all the fuss about some dough? :)
