Am I the only person who doesn't have a problem with Coldplay's lyrics?

Featured Replies

I know I can't be, but sometimes it feels like even in the positive reviews of Coldplay's stuff, there's always criticism of Chris Martin's lyrics. People say they're cliched, simplistic, sappy, all sorts of things. I myself quite like them. They're not the greatest ever, of course, but they fit the songs perfectly, and they're just right for singing along. They've got a simplicity that's kind of charmingly over-the-top, rather than annoyingly cliched. That's the way I feel about them, at least, and I just want to know if anyone agrees.

Lyrics are only cheesy/sappy/etc. if the singer does not mean what he is singing. Chris Martin means what he sings.

Plus, may I direct your attention to *takes a deep breath* Brothers & Sisters, Don't Panic, Spies, Yellow, Trouble, We Never Change, Politik, God Put A Smile Upon Your Face, Clocks, The Scientist, Warning Sign, A Rush Of Blood To The Head, Amsterdam, I Ran Away, Animals, Square One, White Shadows, Fix You, A Message, Swallowed In The Sea, Twisted Logic, 'Til Kingdom Come, Gravity, How You See The World, How You See The World No. 2, Cemeteries Of London, Yes, Violet Hill, Strawberry Swing, Death And All His Friends, Moving To Mars, Major Minus, U.F.O., Don't Let It Break Your Heart, and Up With The Birds?

I've always loved his lyrics. I think they are generally extraordinary. I'm a little amazed that he gets grief from critics let alone Coldplayers. I was first attracted to the lyrics. (I'm late to the game) I loved Viva La Vida complex, evocative lyrcs. They not only made me want to hear more music but to know who wrote them. I was blissfully unaware that he took heat because of the lyrics for a long time. Astonishing.

My thoughts exactly.

I LOVE the lyrics! I don't understand why people don't, but I enjoy them :D

Thank you for starting this thread because the criticism of Coldplay's lyrics really bothers me. I think during one of the recent interviews Chris mentioned that he was harshly criticized for the lyrics on X&Y. He mentioned that ever since then he has tried to improve on his writing. Ironically, X&Y happens to be my favorite album and what drew me to X&Y were the lyrics. I think the lyrics are amazing and incredibly heartfelt. Songs on all of Coldplay's albums including the Scientist, Amsterdam, Every Teardrop, Fix You, Talk to name just a few, have beautiful lyrics. Chris is an incredibly talented song writer and I wish he would pay less attention to the critics because he has no reason to doubt his writing abilities or change his writing style. He is brilliant.

I'm listening to some of the "old" Coldplay now, i'm actually listening to For You, it has very simple lyrics but they are really beautiful, the same with Your Love Means Everything and I Ran Away. I think they have some great lyirics.

I really love the lyrics to almost all the songs, except PoC. ETIAW is... average. But I love the lyrics.

I love their lyrics. Do I need to remind you about Glass of Water?? Or For You? Or even Viva La Vida. And Us Against the World? Or Warning Sign? Or Dont Panic?? Politik?? Dont Let it Break Your Heart?? Or Amsterdam?? They're songs that mean something. And they do mean something. And they're really great plus catchy. I think Chris is an amazing songwriter.

I agree :) I have always loved his lyrics, even though they aren't the best out there, but that's part of what makes him Chris and what makes it Coldplay. I've always said I don't listen just for the lyrics, it's the music and the lyrics together, the whole experience, and I personally think that that's what matters, the way the music makes me feel :)

I have always loved their lyrics, I still do, and I will keep on loving them. And I really hate it when people say that they keep repeating the same lyrics over and over again come on listen to Everything's not lost or In My Place, they repeat things all the time!

I might go as far as saying Coldplay have my favorite lyrics of any band/artist.

Maybe they aren't as straight forward as other lyrics, but that's what I like about them. The lyrics fit the mood the instruments and writing create, and act like an extra layer of emotion. I don't know if that makes sense out of my own head, but that's the only way I know how to explain it.

Also, don't take the people on this forum's opinions too seriously. The angry ones are always more outspoken than the happy ones!:D There's more of us, we just go unnoticed.
