More Chris journal entires from the early years

Featured Replies

The newby insomniac is back, with more lovely finds courtesy coldplay.com and the WayBackMachine. ;)

I've gone through the website's 'journal' archives and found some very interesting updates written by Chris himself at various points of the Parachutes promotional years. I've also got some later ones by Jonny, Will, and Phil, which I'll save for later.

Again, nothing changed but paragraph breaks.

the audiences at our concerts have so far been amazing so thanks if you were one of them.

every time i think that it might be an idea to write a journal entry, because i met such and such, or because we played a good or bad gig, or because there is some new coldplay song, i am put off by the fact that it is all pretty irrelevant really, in the grand scheme of things. there are important elections going on, and ridiculous ideas being touted (missile defence systems etc), and people being severely maltreated by other people, and all sorts of depressing yet stupidly important stuff.

although we bands love to moan about the press, at least they (most of the time) can tell you what's going on where. my friend seth sent me an article the other day relating the actions of the taliban in afghanistan, and how they have suggested that non-muslims wear a marker to show their religion, just as the jews had to do under the nazis. time magazine recently ran a story about child killers (i.e. children who have killed, not been killed), which highlighted the absurdity of guns being able to get into the hands of children in some places.

so is there any point in some singer doing a diary? maybe; perhaps it is an idea to just ignore all this shit sometimes, and write about how interesting our soundcheck was, because for a very few people that might actually be a good thing to read; escapism in a way i suppose, in the same way (but to a much lesser degree) that music and films and all forms of entertainment are.

we are in texas, the concerts are good, i met the bad guy from karate kid (true), and some new coldplay songs rule. of great pleasure to us was the attendance of our gig in dallas by wayne coyne from the flaming lips, and jim ward our good friend who was?is? the guitarist and keyboardist and composer of songs in at-the-drive-in. in fact jim and mrs ward have been with us a few days, and they are truly great.

it is incredible to me how many different places we have now been where people know the words to our songs. you know, you start a song on your own in a room, and then you take it to jon or will or guy, and they do something with it, and then a bit of time later and 3000 texans are there telling you what was or wasn't yellow. i mean it's great but it makes me want to improve everything no end, so that nobody has to waste their ear-time on shit when they listen to or see us. i mean life is short and i don't want to waste people's time, and hence feel highly driven.

when you see the flaming lips live, or hear the boatman's call by nick cave, or watch life is beautiful by roberto begnini, it is pure undiluted quality time, and that is what we must be. i'm sorry to anyone who has already felt cheated by our record or concert or whatever. i get highly pissed off if i watch a rubbish film or have to sit and listen to lift music or hotel lobby music for too long, because there is better stuff to be filling your head with. the time we waste on nonsense is ridiculous; i think john told you about what happened at customs the other day.

it is bizarre how we often have no individual choice at all; in everything from having to listen to piped music to being told you can't do what you want with your own body. i'm headed down a tricky path here so i'll stop with this; i mean you have to have laws and rules to stop people hurting each other don't you, and you have to have inoffensive music in lifts. anyway i'm basically saying in this journal entry that i'm confused as hell.

thanks for being on our website, it's going to be double good soon.

This one dates a bit later, and is signed from the whole band, though titled with Chris's name. It sounds very much like him, though!

well we are in iceland and about to play but before we do we as a band wanted to tell you what's going on and what might go on. there is so much nonsense talked about us these days which is a shame. i know coldplay talk is pretty irrelevant on world terms, but i got told that some people who were into the band early on were getting annoyed and think that we have gone to live in cloud cuckoo land. so whilst we know that any changes we make and any success we have or don't have will change opinions of us, we feel it necessary to explain some stuff.

it annoys me that we have consciously done everything to avoid being in adverts and bad films, and selling out and all that, and yet there are some people saying we do things just for the money.

we treat the bands that tour with us not bad at all. the bands that support us generally seem pretty happy, and we have loved being with alfie and grandaddy and the like; the other day ron sexsmith played with us in sydney and he was amazing.

i acknowledge that we have turned up the volume a bit and are doing different things live. this is because we are FULL OF LIFE at the moment and have never had so much fun onstage or felt happier. in march i couldn't sing and couldn't accept the fact that anyone liked us, but then amazing things happened and now we are very excited.

i fully acknowledge that my hair is a bit short; i saw a picture the other day and there was no hair in sight so i am determined to grow it a bit and look like fabio again. these are the risks you take when you buy your own clippers, and i don't recommend it as before you know it you have gone loopy.

i like all the rumours about who we are or are not going out with, because they confirm that we are the sexiest band in the world.

we are going into the studio on october the fourth and will make the best and most passionate album you have ever heard

so don't worry about us. we will probably go quiet for a bit while we're recording so thanks again for looking out for us, and please listen to WAR by u2 as it is amazing,or go and see MUSE live as they are on fire.

thanks for letting us get away with this job

i have to go as julia roberts is coming for lunch

this is obviously not true

love chris and guy jon and will

Again, I'm so ridiculously struck by what's written here. Fantastic insight, and it's quite fun to dig around the pits of horribly laid out 2001-era websites at 1.00 AM. There are lots of various photos posted, but I've yet to discover if one can expand them beyond the teeny tiny size they are on the site.

Enjoy!

Wow thanks.. and I DO think his writing has come on, despite the lack of capital letters! LOL..

hahaha!! :laugh3:

Hahaha, Row, I was gonna copy the same quote!

But indeed, the second one sounds very much like Chris as well!

Oh how I love this man :wacky:

The parts Row & Ellen quoted are my favourites

And thank you for sharing this, you didn't know that but it's a great present for my birthday :awesome::lol:

It wouldn't let me quote... I dunno. BUT:

Ugh. His words. I love how human he is. He tells it like it is, and he really has depth. He's not just some "celebrity" who doesn't care about what's going on. He's human, he thinks, he cares deeply, he is humble. Granted, this is 11 years ago? I still think that's how he is....It makes me love their music even more, just because they ARE so real. He is being honest here. It just really makes me happy. :)

Well, a very happy birthday to you, love. Glad I could help

Chris can be quite hilarious (in his slightly unintentional way).

His old posts make me feel really nostalgic.

I totally agree with what you said. Chris still seems to be that openminded, attentive and intelligent man he was 11 years ago.

He is so amazing! These glimpses into his mind are getting better and better. What musician apologizes to anyone who may have felt cheated by their music? "I'm confused as hell." haha Please Chris, no Fabio! :)

What I want to know is.....Jon, what happened in customs? :D

(except hopefully he has learned some better grammar :P)

I think it's a different person, there's an 'h' in that 'John'

Funny Chris is funny :nod::dazzled:

I've got ones by Jonny and Will, and also a few by Phil too. They're very... different but fun reads all the same :dozey:

Glad to hear you guys like these.

These are amazing, really interesting to read (despite Chris' grammar in the first one you posted :laugh3: :P ) Thank you for posting them. I'd really like to read the other ones you mentioned you have :)
