nvdmm
One Direction were given a special shout out by indie rockers Coldplay at a gig on Thursday, according to The Sun. The paper reports that frontman Chris Martin knew that 1D heartthrob Harry Styles was in the audience - and shouted out a line from What Makes You Beautiful as the band launched into a rendition of Yellow. Harry was obviously thrilled by the tribute - he later wrote on Twitter: "Icon. Coldplay were in another class tonight!!" The 18-year-old then shared a link to a video he had taken of the moment, posting: "Good night guys... I leave you with the best video I've ever seen. "This was incredible." http://www.mtv.co.uk/news/one-direction/358409-coldplay-one-direction-tribute-harry-styles :disappointed: things like this and bieber lady gaga comments from chris really dont help the band's image at all. yes i know as coldplay fans we're pretty used to getting ridiculed but these things just make it worse! nothing wrong in associating with flaming lips or kanye and jay-z cuz they're actually super cool and great musicians (kanye is a genius) and people take them seriously but one direction?! really pisses me off anyway i know chris sees nothing wrong with this and maybe thats the problem
Strawberry Swinger
His "problem" is that he is always trying to be nice to everyone and always acts as if he owes it to people around him. But that's a nice feature really. It's just not "clever" in the world of today...

The One Direction, Bieber, and GaGa comments from Chris in YOUR opinion hurts the band and their image... then you were ok with associating FL, Kanye, or Jay-Z, because in YOUR opinion they were cool... Well personally I can't stand "Kanye", Bieber, but really like GaGa and a few songs from One Direction, and the image of Coldplay in my mind has not been altered at all. Wish people could just enjoy Coldplay without getting upset with what THEY think Chris and Coldplay should be doing..I think they are doing exactly what the hell they want to be doing and are quite successful in the Universe... Either you like it or ya dont:cool:

Texas Rez
Can we get an Amen please. +2 Amen! I think Coldplay is doing their fans good for giving them the appropriate shout-outs needed, whether you like it or not. When it comes to a Coldplay concert and everything else in between... We are one!
kickinit4real22
Personally I don't see what the big deal is. He just did something nice for a fan. I say fan because this guy or teenager, I don't know admires him. So put ourselves in his shoes, if someone you really looked up to went out of their way at their concert to acknowledge you, this would be like one of your happiest moments ever and that's very sweet of him to do. BTW I like Lady Gaga, thank you very much.

But that's a nice feature really. It's just not "clever" in the world of today... hes trying too hard to appeal to a wider audience. people like jared leto and rosie huntington attend their shows and look who gets a shout out!! LFDianne
Ok so look at it this way. Chris gave a shutout to a fan. It was one freaking lyric that mentioned. Chris does shout outs ALL THE TIME! He changes lyrics in nearly every city they go to, in Violet Hill for example, he regularly says something along the lines of "I took my love down to Tampa or Houston or Los Angeles" etc. Chris has hanged lyrics before too, adding a Brice Springsteen lyric in their Grammy 2009 performance. And even Bono covered part of Yellow during Glastonbury last year. I just do not understand all the uproar over it. And it's no secret at all that Chris loves pop music either! So just chill out people!

You might not like them, but that doesn't mean that those artist are not good at what they do and obviously Chris agrees.

It's Chris being Chris. The man is just nice to everyone, regardless of what fans think of said person. I love how you are okay with Chris collaborating/saying nice things about Jay-Z/Flaming Lips (because, in your books, they are cool), but go off on him when he talks nice about pop artists. To me, it sounds like your just blindingly judging Chris.

He made many references to the team during the show. Was that "Trying too hard?" Chris gave a shoutout during Fix You to a teenage girl who contracted a rare disease two weeks before the show and who just had heart surgery and wasn't able to attend the concert as planned, but her friends were there to hear it. Was that " trying too hard?" Like it or not, 1D is one of the most popular bands in the world and even accomplished something that Coldplay, or any other UK band hasn't done in 14 years - and that's enter the US charts with a #1 debut single. I just don't understand the uproar over it. It's just something that Chris does, has always done and always will do. Sure you're entitled to your opinion, but think about it in the bigger context and it just doesn't matter what Chris does. It's HIS show and he can do what he wants. Dianne, Tracy, and NVDMM.....you might a chuckle out of this: I was reading the original post and thinking, what a jerky thing to say ....everybody has different tastes in music....why is someone else's taste in pop music such a weird bone of contention with people. You think there are pages and pages of blogs in the art world with comments slagging off others peoples taste in painters like..... "You like David Hockney??? ....jeez you're such a sell-out, Basquiat is the only real Neo-expressionist, YA LOSER!!!!" Is it because pop music is appreciated by hot headed/naively opinionated 16 yr olds in much bigger numbers than, say, classical ballet??? I was going to write a rambling post self-righteously blathering on how immature people can be.... Then I remembered my husband's comment a couple of years ago that went something like this: "I really have lost respect for Chris....I mean the collaboration with Kanye???what a no-talent dumb***. And while I'm at it, what's his fascination with Bruce Springsteen... WTF??...I've never connected with that whole Jersey working-class stiff schtick, can Chris REALLY identify or is he just being a suck-up?" ...bblahblahblah OMG LOL, We're are completely guilty of being total musical bigots too, just the opposite of the artists NVDMM name checked. I think I need to re-examine my self-superior attitude in my old age. LOL

It's like food - there are foods I just don't like, but others do. Does it really matter to anyone else, other than my personal chef, that I can't stand green bell peppers? Uh oh, I better watch it now because those green bell pepper lovers are going to jump all over me now, and wonder how I can NOT LOVE green bell peppers because they are so much better than red bell peppers. But I sure as hell don't hold it against a chef who wants to cook with green bell peppers for someone else! Shouldn't music be the same way? Should I stop going to restaurants where they use green bell peppers because I don't like them? Should I publicly dis the chef for using green peppers? Does anyone see how utterly ridiculous this whole "sell out" thing is???
