🌙 COLDPLAY ANNOUNCE MOON MUSIC OUT OCTOBER 4TH 🎵

Music Hate. Why?

Recommended Posts

So, after seeing the number of crude/hateful remarks on the YouTube page for Viva, I had to bring this up. Why do people insist on putting down others who listen to an artist that they don't like? Voicing it is okay, but anything farther than that...

For instance: I don't like Justin Bieber, but I don't go around calling him or his fans gay.

The whole point of music is to express yourself creatively through it. If you can't do that, then what's the point?

people take music too seriously

Music can get very personal, and so people take it too seriously. Since I'm a fan of Coldplay I've been taking their music seriously, too much sometimes I have to admit

In the end, music is only entertainment, after all. (and that's what the band tends to say lately)

Whenever someone mentions this topic, I think of this...

The sounds you put in your ears doesn't make you a better person.

I think it's fair to say that youtube comments are a reflex of a more general attitude people may have towards music (or other domains involving personal views). Some people (or people in general, in different occasions) may think that expressing your negative opinion (meaning 'dislike') on something imply degrading it and degrading things external to it. Eventually, it may end up as hatred, straying too far away from a 'simple' question of likes and dislikes, which, for not being objetive, is not a question of right and wrong. Unfortunately, once things get heated, it can be forgotten. For example, someone may say that they hate U2 because they think Bono is a douche. While I do understand that the way you think the artist as a person is can affect your views on their work, how is that even a comment about music? Sometimes, people may resort to that sort of comment to uphold something as simples as 'well, U2's music is not really to my taste'. I don't know, we may get a bit defensive when expressing views of that nature.

I think you guys meant that taking music too seriously may cause endless and unreasonable quarrels. In that point, I do agree with you. However, I think I take music seriously because it helps me to view things in a way different from what I'd without certain songs. And I think it does affect me somehow, so it's not just harmless entertainment. (I admit I'm overstretching what you guys said, but I'm doing it just to make it easier to express what I'm trying to say.)

Why do people insist on putting down others who listen to an artist that they don't like? Voicing it is okay, but anything farther than that...

People tend to put down other's favorites that they don't like mainly because for a few reasons:

1.) To piss you off.

2.) They're arrogant.

3.) They're assholes.

4.) Screw #4. :P

Trust me, I know how you must feel on this issue. My oldest brother worships Bowie and Bjork, and never had I heard him make a positive note on the artists I like. Not only that, but I listen to a Japanese band (Asian Kung-Fu Generation), and whenever I listen to them, or even mention them, he acts all xenophobe... I guess he thinks that I listen to them because their Japanese, but if so, he's wrong. :\

As for voicing an acceptable opinion, I'm also okay with that, but as far as to tell you to stop wearing the shirt of a band you love is as far as crossing the North Korean border; it ain't gonna happen.

To wrap up this rant, don't listen to the pointless statements people say about the music you listen to, as they probably haven't heard enough of your favorite artists to even like them. Ultimately, you are the judge of what you listen to. Don't let anyone get to you, and...

Express yourself freely through music. :D

I don't think success should matter I think that all that should be important is the quality of the music and how it relates to you.

Because there's absolutely nothing arrogant or assholish about saying this.

Just to clarify: I'm not talking about me personally... I really don't care if someone tells me they don't like the music I listen to.

It's the fact that someone on YouTube told another person to go kill themselves over music. It just shocked me. :P

It just didn't make sense to me, why would you tell someone to die, just because they didn't like the music you listen to. People are nuts.

Edit: Music is an art of expression. Why doesn't it matter what type of music you listen to, as long as it means something to you?

the older brother thing probably has more to do with your relationship with your brother, not because of the bands.

I used to hate everything my brother listened to, just because he listened to it, and i hated my brother! but now that we're older etc i respect what he listens to and he has introduced me to some of my favourite artists :cheesy:

That person is being a troll. It happens all the time. You can't take people like that seriously.

Don't feed the trolls, kids.

I don't appreciate you putting people off our artwork.
