Coldplay join soul singer Adele and rock band Oasis on the list of artists that have sold the most CDs over the last 30 years.

The first CD was created by presses in October 1982, with an episode of factual programme Tomorrow’s World introducing the compact disc to the world.

Coldplay have clearly used the invention to their advantage since, managing to shift 7.8million of them over the years, namely through their albums Parachutes, A Rush Of Blood To The Head and X&Y.

Robbie Williams, in second place, sold 6.9million CDs since first leaving Take That. His first solo album I’ve Been Expecting You sold 2,377,991 discs.

Fourth is pop group Abba and their singles compilation album Gold – out in 1992 – which shifted 3.7million in CD sales, while Oasis racked up 3.4million with their hit LP What’s The Story Morning Glory.

The information put together by The Official Charts Company, names Adele one place behind Abba with her second album 21 selling 3.6million copies when it was released last year.

Other artists on the list include Dido, who is in third place with 5.9million CD sales for 2000’s No Angel and 2003’s Life For Rent.

The Verve, Shania Twain, David Gray, The Beatles and Kings Of Leon all feature around the 2million mark on the chart.

One thing I don't understand on this list. Why for some groups they add several albums and for others don't? And where is Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson and Queen?

It's a list of the 30 biggest selling CDs of the last 30 years. So Coldplay has three CDs that are in the top 30 and apparently Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson and Queen didn't sell enough CDs.

Ah, I get it. But then why they don't add, for example, CD sales of Viva La Vida?

It's a top 30 of CDs, not artists. Parachutes, AROBTTH and X&Y are in that top 30, VLVODAAHF isn't.

I didn't know that Viva sold less albums in the UK than Parachutes, AROBTTH or X&Y. Thanks for clearing that up!
