Coldplay's deal with Parlaphone to end after LP7?

Featured Replies

That is the case according to this:

Swift is one of four superstars—along with RCA’s Justin Timberlake, Columbia’s Beyoncé and Parlophone’s Coldplay—who are just one album from the ends of their deals, while Fall Out Boy owes Island one more after the album hitting early next year, which will contain the band’s smash single "Centuries." But whether these acts re-up or take their talents elsewhere—and there will be no shortage of bidders for their services as recording artists—their next deals are likely to be less gigantic than their present ones, simply because elephant-bucks deals can no longer be justified economically. While the $15-20m range wasn’t uncommon in the past for major acts, the ceiling now seems to be $10m tops—except for Adele.

so maybe they signed only a 2 record deal after MX. remember chris saying that LP7 would wrap up a story/journey? wonder whether this has anything to do with that idea.

Before opening that link, this is not about the band breaking up after LP7 right? Please say no.

Intersting! What direction do you all think they will go in after LP7 / the record deal finishes? Going independent/creating their own label would be a massive surprise but its not out of the question as they the people around them to thrive still in music industry.

Change in sound more likely, perhaps becoming a lot more experimental after a big seventh album full of stadium anthems? ;)

I could def see them creating their own label. I think they would love the whole process of bringing on new artists, JMO

If they ended up creating their own label, they should name it as in like 'Blue Room' or 'Safety' record studios :P

Man, I would never stop smiling if they did this. I think Coldplay's best stuff would come out of it, too.

Those make great names! :D

They most certainly should do it! How bloody awesome would they be having their own label! Exciting!

I'd be surprised if they did make their own label tbh

I actually think them making their own label is something they would do IMO. Then they'd have freedom, I'd like them to do it anyway.

HA that would be pretty cool :D

'eVolve'

(that word has got love in it no matter which way you read it!)

...and let's face it...that's what Coldplay do, they make such beautiful music that it helps us to evolve as humans.

loVe to eVolve

I guess...anything is possible...

how much of this is 'i would want this to happen' rather than 'i expect this to happen'

i dunno, i just can't see them spending another chunk of time on something else, i could be wrong but they sound pretty busy usually

sadly, i agree with you. also coldplay seem to be less entrepreneurial/business minded than the artists who make their own labels. they seem more focused on the music. having said that, creating their own label would be amazing. if not, how about a more experimental, less mainstream turn? that would be great!

Yeah, a label by Coldplay would be nice. They could take time to make LP8 to evaluate and innovate their music. That means there would be no deadline for it but that's perfectly fine. I'm willing to wait for an epic record

As others have pointed out in the thread, while I'd loooooooove for them to create their own label, they seem to always be busy or involved in various projects and things outside of Coldplay, and creating their own label would probably require them to mostly focus on that for a while, which is a challenge they might not feel ready for. And they do seem mostly focused on the musical side rather than the entrepreneurial side of their work.

But I do see them founding a label eventually, with Phil as the ultimate boss :awesome:

Man that would be so awesome :awesome:

Also you're all wrong, it would be called The Pectoralz Boyz studio

I don't see them creating their own label but I see them signing a 360 deal with live Nation who will handle their tours, albums distribution and merchandise

If it's true that they only have one album left on the contact, wouldn't Live 2014 fill that? What's the deal with live albums?

Good point but I would assume the contract would be for 'studio albums'.

As far as i know they had a deal with Parlophone of 5 albums, after MX it was knows they had renewed the contract, but Parlophone was sold by EMI to Universal but there were no details about how many albums were in the deal, two albums seems fair cause five album is now a big number for a band that already had 5 albums at the time of the deal, so it does make sense and i hope its true.

There are not gonna create their own label that's for sure, i dont think its their thing, but in a way i can see them pull off a "radiohead" and move away from the radio friendly area, cause i think they need a break from all that success

If they indeed move away from Universal, I take this as great news. Specially because, in my opinion, the inclusion of ASFOS on Ghost Stories just screams Label Intromission.

Still, not sure if they're ready to leave their "grandparents house" yet.

so some rumors circulating again:

BIG BANG THEORY: Some are speculating about the possibility of Apple starting a label and going after Swift, Beyoncé, Coldplay and Justin Timberlake, whose contracts are all nearing the ends of their terms, with the overt intention of crushing the competition in the digital sector. But the tech giant doesn’t need to get into the record business in order to accomplish that goal; all it needs to do is to sign these superstars to exclusive deals for digital rights, thus effectively shutting out Spotify and every other service. Even if each deal costs $20-30m, that amounts to a drop in the bucket for this moneymaking colossus. As a further selling point, it doesn’t hurt to have Jimmy Iovine—the best closer in the business—and Dr. Dre in the house.

i personally hope this is not true. i'd prefer coldplay distancing themselves from the in-your-face mainstream businesses for the next deal(s). but that will just end up wishful thinking i guess.

omg i was watching the howard stern all over again and i found out something

HW: "you own your own music right"

CM: "No we own hardly of it"

HW: "You sold off the rights?"

CM: "We don't own it for at least 20 years or something"
