Modest Mouse, Joss Stone, Elliott Yamin, Marques Houston Bow in Top 10

March 27, 2007

There are no traps on this week’s chart for Modest Mouse.

The Portland, OR indie darlings’ new Epic album, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, docked at #1 this week, with an above water total of 133k. The group follows up nicely from its 2004 breakthrough, Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which sold a total of 1.5 million.

Several other new acts have good news, too. Virgin U.K. soul diva Joss Stone’s third album proved the charm for record buyers at #2, racking up 124k in sales after her sophomore effort kicked in 1.2 million.

In the week’s biggest surprise, another American Idol alum, Elliott Yamin, sees his debut on Hickory Records, the new label from Sony/ATV’s Danny Strick through Bob Morelli’s RED, score a total of 96k for managers Jeff Rabhan and Josh Abraham. He bows just above fellow show grad Daughtry, who remains at #4. As Borat would say: “Niiiiiiice.”

Universal Motown stud Marques Houston’s Veteran made it four newcomers to the Top 5, landing at #5.

The rest of the Top 10 includes SRC/Universal Motown’s Akon (#6), now at double-platinum, The Inc./Universal Motown’s Lloyd (#7), giving Motown queen Sylvia Rhone three of the Top 7, last week’s chart-topper, Atlantic’s Musiq Soulchild (#8), Universal Republic’s breakthrough Amy Winehouse (#9) and Interscope’s Mobile, AL rapper Rich Boy (#10).

Other chart newcomers include Universal Republic’s Baby Boy Da Prince (#24), Rap-A-Lot/Atlantic’s Devin the Dude (#29), Reprise’s Crime Mob (#30), Universal Republic’s Stephen Marley (#31) and Psychopathic’s Insane Clown Posse (#40).

Walt Disney Records’ Hannah Montana soundtrack returns to the Top 25 as the week’s biggest gainer, moving #35-21, +69%, followed by Def Jam/IDJ’s Young Jeezy #34, +13%).

Other positive moves are registered by Blue Note’s Norah Jones (#13, +3%), A&M/Interscope’s Fergie (#14, +3%), Universal Republic’s Hinder (#33, +2%) and Fueled by Ramen/WMG’s Gym Class Heroes (#46-38, +8%).

Next week, a couple of heavy hitters make the scene, as Curb’s Tim McGraw and EMM’s Now 24 along with G Unit/Interscope’s Young Buck, Def Jam’s Redman and Capitol’s Mims.

Modest Mouse displays greatness

ALT-INDIE BAND PROVES ITS METTLE AT SJSU

It must be awfully tough for Modest Mouse to live up to the first half of its name.

The Washington state band, a beloved indie-rock band for much of its career, has broken into the mainstream in a big way. The group's latest offering, "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank," debuted at No.1 on the Billboard charts in March. It sold some 129,000 copies in its first week on shelves.

Modest Mouse has been supporting that album during one of the spring's hottest North American tours. The final performance took place Wednesday night at the Event Center at San Jose State University.

Bandleader Isaac Brock and his gang of humble mice, which now includes former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, kept their winning streak alive as they delighted fans with a 90-minute set of mesmerizing alt-rock.

The six-piece ensemble opened the show with a short tour through its three-disc major-label catalog. The band struck first with a zigzagging, chaotic take on "Paper Thin Walls," from 2000's "The Moon and Antarctica," and followed with a booming "Bury Me With It," from 2004's break-out "Good News for People Who Love Bad News." Brock then brought the crowd up to date with a pair of radio-friendly tunes from the new album - "Dashboard" and "Fire It Up."

At the end of a stellar show, Modest Mouse returned for an encore, hitting the crowd with a version of the new album's "Spitting Venom" that was as grand a rock epic as any I've heard performed live in years. It was as though U2, Coldplay, Talking Heads and Radiohead had merged on the stage.

No, it was better than that. It was Modest Mouse achieving its potential.

Anyone like them. I do. But they sound horrible live. And some of theyre lyrics you cant understand.

I don't find uncomprehensable lyrics a problem, I love MM's vocals tho, Brock loves to shout, I love to hear him shout.

And one day I will buy another album. I only have Good news and Lonesome wild west (which Im not a fan of really)

I liked some of the new stuff off of, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, which is a very Smiths like titile. They were able to bring in one of their idols to join the band (Johnny Marr), and he did some fantastic work....
