  1. :rolleyes:Then you should surprise them all, and jump ahead to the next section!!:P After all, how else will you get into Mensa??:laugh3:
  2. So then, this is the place for Pervism?:P
  3. :laugh3: So, Mensa is daft in Spanish - good to know! Be good as always Carla, and have fun @ class tomorrow!
  4. :laugh3: So that's what goes on at Mensa meetings?!:P Somehow, I'm just not surprised.. I came in second at the Nobel Prize Committee's choice for theory about the Universe, but they never invited me to a Mensa meeting!:lol: Well, at least they don't play D&D. (probably because they'd never do anything else..:laugh3:) Uncle Albert probably had the same problems with crowds of chatters - he was quite sociable, but not the type to walk on others.;) Anyhow, I'm wondering if the Justice Department will ever go after the culprits on Wall Street responsible for the mess - seems like the same ducks are in the Obama administration, thus preventing thorough investigating. Just a hunch. On a lighter mote, the love you take is equal to the love you make;) Paul McCartney was right on that; what a cold gray world it would be otherwise..
  5. Sounds like you're thoughtful, reflective, and intelligent; most people are unwilling to open up to anyone who isn't on the exact same wavelength they're on, or who doesn't emulate their intensity level.. A lot of people here (as in the US) can be rude - are you an American then?:laugh3: (*looks around, hoping nobody else notices..*)
  6. I think I've hugged cow turds for free!:laugh3: Would you become a wing walker, for a cool million?
  7. Aww, what a cute bunny wabbit!:) Is that your pet, Carla??
  8. Is this the purr unit??:laugh3: Is there any loud purring going on here?
  9. :laugh3:Start with the ones that grab instant attention, and are a bit more upbeat.. I think Strawberry Swing is really nice, or Lover's in Japan, or Clocks ;)
  10. Well, she might be onto something there, although it's better to maybe set some time limits, and then loosen those on the week-ends?? Going without your baby - that's really rough!!;) I'll miss you, Carla!! Tell me how the escape craft turned out, if you get back to a computer.;);)
  11. A deep intuitive sense of what resonates with your audience; to be in their shoes, and either resonate with their moods and feelings, or change those moods with new sounds. A mystery always sells; intrigue and surprises. Or, go a more conventional route to start, pick some older songs (go back in time as far as you like), and make those into something new (just ask John Lennon's Jukebox). There is no single formula, but some formulas are more or less successful in garnering a wide audience, and are dependent on the mood of the times.. True artists will create art for art's sake, and be wildly creative, but then they may starve in the process. Better to start out with a normal set of songs which find an instant audience, and do some purely creative pieces, of which maybe 1 out of 100 will gain recognition, but will open up the space for new ideas. Much of what we hear today is the work of other unrecognized artists who have inspired musicians that have turned those pieces into commonly desired works; so, the art scene can be a great formative experience. It's about projecting, so it's about the audience - to put within them the feeling of greatness, the feeling that this song is their song; to convey some feeling with great meaning, and the intensity or mellowness you wish to convey, but which they resonate with. Music seems to almost always be written about someone else, and can be modern or otherwise folk-hero oriented. But for the band - well, there has to be this resonance as well, and a sense of great mutual respect. Perhaps a sense of common purpose; a sort of collective soul for brief moments of time.
  12. 22:54 and posting on this goofy forum!:P
  13. I have to come to terms with the fact that those currently in power accepted the money from the firms that helped create the problems; that hasn't changed, so for whatever they say, the actual deeds may not match the rhetoric. But if they're unwise, they won't fix it, and worse problems may then arise which will lead to economic hardships, & some real reform measures - maybe under duress. Government, when carefully and diligently watched and corrected, has the power to act as a check against market train derailments and corrupt or unscrupulous practices. Ours is in need of being corrected so it once again will function as an arbiter for the interests of the citizens, and the nation as a whole. But as far as someone coming from the American Enterprise Institute, I begin to think about their support and political agendas:American Enterprise Institute - SourceWatch
  14. What the heck did Paul want, anyhow? Somehow, he thought I was supposed to know 'telepathically'.. well, I only know some, but not precisely what he was asking. To play another song? You never expect these people to show up at some minor event and start quizzing you, and it's so out-of-place when your mind is focused elsewhere, you know what I mean?? I thought they came for the event, more than chatting about music; and time passes, so that was back in memory.. I can't just create magic from thin air at all times... If he reads this, Paul, if you read this, just give me a call, or send me a message.
  15. They may create a problem if the goals and stimulus is too short-term, but I at least hope they're smart enough to not re-create the conditions that led to this disaster.. It's still a matter for straitening out, if they're unwilling to address the underlying causes, and the root cause I think has to do with money flowing from the very groups who are responsible for the debacle to the politician's 'campaign' pockets. Stopping that may take a lot of pressure from an informed electorate, or a severe downturn that's protracted, but I'm hoping we can force fairness back into the process without severe long-term economic suffering..
  16. The Second Question - today's wars, and the "carnival of idiots" who just left the podium not too long ago...
  17. Wow, I'm old!:laugh3: I have to say I remember seeing some of the lunar landings live (I was 3 ), and I do remember the news about Woodstock, but just barely. I remember Nixon's impeachment, and the end of the Vietnam war.. Tumultuous times, not all that different from this epoch here.
  18. Glue can be a very sticky subject, but thanks for providing that information!;) And here's some more places to check out on Silicon, the amazing metalloid: Solar Silicon Prices Dropping, New Energy Finance Says Silicon (Si) - Chemical properties, Health and Environmental effects Ductile iron containing ~39% silicon. (Tech Spotlight).
  19. When you know the true meaning of In Rainbows.:P
  20. Soy de los Grandes Lagos.;) How warm is Mexico today?
  21. Hola Cinthya!:)
  22. chuck kottke replied to Lore's topic in The Lounge
OOH, hey, what would pizza be without fresh red and green peppers!!;) And black olives, extra sauce, and I like to sprinkle chili powder on top sometimes... Lore, this is all your fault - now I'm hungry!!:P:laugh3:
  23. Well, the free market might allow for super-rich CEO's to be created, but a government with better checks and balances could work to counter the attempts to amass power and control, and to prevent systems- government, private, or otherwise, from becoming excessively powerful and internally corrupt. Fair markets make sense to me, but unregulated markets are probably not the answer.. The stimulus might go for infrastructure, but I wonder about corruption from within, and whether the stimulus money will be used in the best manner possible, or go into the areas where those with the most influence over the bill get the biggest infusion, and then the biggest political campaign kickbacks. I'd like to believe otherwise as well, but history has a way of showing that levels of corruption increase when pressure mounts to pass bills. Some have no scruples, and the Patriot and Homeland Security Acts show the pork that's possible in the confusion and pressure during a perceived crisis moment. Even so, if more of the money winds up in the pockets of construction workers, subcontractors, infrastructure specialists, renewable energy sector jobs, and the like, it will stimulate the economy; enough though to make a significant difference?
  24. Cool! I've only caught a glimpse of our elusive native bobcat, but that must have been neat to see the jaguar tracks in the Amazon's mud!! I need to find out more about our native bobcats and Canada Lynx here as well - they're so rare, I wonder if their populations are in any danger in a like fashion, and what can be done about it..
