  1. Ok then :nice: (I misread everything, geez )
  2. suzanafg replied to Coldplay's topic in Coldplay
Yesterday, I was watching a random tv show and the presenters asked what the favourite tv series of the girl being interviewed was. She said that she used to love Grey's Anatomy, but no so much these days. She said it was like an old friend from her childhood: someone you grew apart from, someone you don't relate with so much anymore, but someone who is still special to you for everything s/he represented in the past and every role s/he played in your life then. This is pretty much how I feel about Coldplay presently. Coldplay was the first band I have ever loved and it was because of them why I got into music in the first place. X&Y was the first album I ever loved as well. It still brings me the chills to listen to it. It was back in 2005/6, when I was growing up and, as cheesy as it may sound, it helped me through it and is part of the person I grew to be. It was not only the songs themselves, but also the band's earnest attitude, their putting as much effort and love in everything they did, their making sure that they believed what they were doing and that they did everything they believed in. I think that, if you change the past tense for the present tense, this still holds. Since then, a lot of things in my life changed, I had to prioritise assignments and duties, leaving aside a lot of things I loved and enjoyed. I can't change these years past and I wouldn't anyway, but the fact is that my relation to Coldplay wasn't the same anymore. However, in my case at least, the reason is to be found within myself first and foremost. I'd never say I don't like Coldplay as much as I used to because they became more popular and mainstream, that they are selling themselves for the sake of fame. I sincerely believe whatever Coldplay do comes from their hearts. If some of their newest songs happen to be more mainstream, that's a consequence, not a cause, I think. Having said that, I underline the fact that I still enjoy a lot of things Coldplay are doing nowadays because I still think they are brilliant and talented band. In the same extent, I still hold them dear in my heart, in respect of everything they have represented to me.
  3. ^Are you refering to what I said? Because I said 'organised' to mean something like 'build/structure a religion, help display its beliefs and principles'. I didn't know it'd come off as that. (If you are not refering to this, ignore what I wrote above.)
  4. That sounds very reasonable and understandable. I just wouldn't agree that everything else Coldplay did should be completely ignored because of MX (which isn't your point, of course).
  5. ^^No problem at all, really :nice:
  6. Oh, ok, then. I must've misread something you said :)
  7. Oh, sorry, I didn't see you guys moved on from the topic :disappointed:
  8. In much the same way, people start wars, not science. You can use the knowledge attained by scientific reasoning and experimenting for a good purpose or an evil one. Science itself is not to blame for this. I think 'unproven' can only be applied if you are thinking within a theory. No scientific claim is inherently 'true' or 'false'. It's only so according to the criteria and principles that structure a theory. For example, in physics, for centuries some ideas were held, only to come a scientific revolution and turn the theory upside down. (I'm using physics as an example, but you can say the same about any theory.) Therefore, these ideas were thought to be proven in the previous theories and not in the one provided by the revolution. There is no definite answer to how and why things work (even if we have that impression from well-established fields, like physics or biology). In science, as far as I understand it, there is a constant race to try to figure them out. Sometimes, it will mean denying the body of knowlegde that precedes it and building a new one. (However, building a new one is very different from building something anew.) Can't agree more with this. I hate it when people impose their ideas, whatever their content is.
  9. I don't understand why a forum, Coldplay-dedicated or not, should be underrated. It's a valid way of interacting with other people.
  10. I disagree about MX (and VLV) being what they are just for the sake of fame or popularity, but I won't linger on the subject. What I meant is that you probably had very good reason to like Coldplay (or some other band) in the first place and that their recent moves, if you dislike them, wouldn't rub away this reason.
  11. Maybe because, in part, religion stems from human insecureties, desires, from what we're afraid to learn, from what we're ignorant of, the eagerness to cling to something etc. Basically, as I see the matter (obviously, no one has to agree with that point of view), what there is in common among religions (or some of them, at least), is the human component of it. This component may surface as different religions, but deep down, there may be something in common triggering and organising them. edit: When I said 'human insecureties, desires, from what we're afraid to learn, from what we're ignorant of, the eagerness to cling to something etc', I didn't mean to imply anything negative. I didn't use these terms neither in negative sense nor in a positive one. I was listing things that, it may be fair to say, are common to human beings.
  12. Although a lot of popular acts are popular just because they managed to find the formula to catchy songs, it doesn't work both ways; it doesn't entail that 'popular' is a synonym to 'souless'. Coldplay are popular without that. They 'appeal to the masses' because you can relate to their songs, they're good at what they do and pull off a very good live show from what I've heard. Once, Chris attempted an impersonation of Justin Timberlake. This was clearly something intended lightheartedly. Having covered One Direction doesn't mean Coldplay are about to turn into One Direction in much the same way that Chris wasn't going to become Timberlake. The impersonation was a joke, the One Direction line was a shout out or something of that sort. Chris does that a lot. During a BBC show, he changed some words from Yellow to greet Jo Whiley. He often changes the lyrics to greet the people from the country where they are playing. I don't think there is anything wrong about being nice towards other people or willing that lots of people like what you produce. In the Coldplay case, this doesn't imply yielding whatever crap from a pre-established formula to success. Whatever they're doing now is, imo, whay they believe to be the right path to what they want to express for the time being.
  13. You'll have to ask somebody else, sorry :\ I haven't watched the tv series yet. I could report what I heard (very good assessment overall), but I don't think you'd be interested in that.
  14. I kept lurking for ages before I signed up, so I can relate to what you're saying. Also, at first, I didn't remember when I'd met Coldplay, but the first song by them I ever listened was Clocks, but I didn't really know it was Coldplay, all I knew was that I liked the song a lot. Years later, I listened to Fix You, now knowing it was by Coldplay. What am I even talking about? Welcome! I hope you have a great time here :)
  15. It's so cool when you learn that other people enjoy something that is dear to you, like the A Song of Ice and Fire series is to me. I'm currently reading A Dance with Dragons. I got a copy in English (cof because they're a lot cheaper, even if you have to get them shipped cof), but I recently heard a whole chapter is missing from the Brazilian edition, which was released a couple of days ago. I don't know what the fuck they did, but I feel sorry for them. They must've printed loads of books already.
  16. I don't know if you joking or not, but, honestly, however disappointed you're with a band because of their newest material, it isn't reason enough to erase everything else that the band has meant to you.
  17. Unintended is indeed a beautiful song. If you want to listen to a full album, I'd suggest Absolution (their 3rd album). It's friendlier than the first two, imo, though it encompasses elements from these two first albums and the following two as well, both in a lyrical sense and a musical one. All in all, it's a good way to be introduced to Muse, I'd say. If you'd like to listen to individual songs, here are some (I'll list very few songs because I fear a very long list may put one off): [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdghOvIZlL0]Muse Hysteria, V-Festival 2008 - YouTube[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PN6egPgazA]Muse - Feeling Good [Live From Wembley Stadium] - YouTube[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ughBjosWQak]Muse - Hoodoo [Live From Wembley Stadium] - YouTube[/ame] The only criteria I used was: these are some of their songs that sound really good live (which is a constant in Muse domain). The last two videos are from HAARP, their live dvd (one of them, at least). A lot of the songs from that dvd are up on their youtube channel. I hope it was useful somehow and that you enjoy listening to Muse :nice:
  18. They made it a point to quote a lot of things, but finished the article (if you can call it so) with a reported speech structure (someone said that...). I guess they just tried to magnify something in order to create some fuss and atract readers, which really isn't something unprecedented, you know.
  19. Might be it's cute, but I don't think it's cool to provide info about the number of your family members, children etc.
  20. There may be some practical explanation to that, but it may be the case that some people just throw the tissue box there after using it. Another thing about cars (one that probably doesn't have a practical explanation) is that, in my city (São Paulo, Brazil), a lot of people are using stickers representing their family members.
  21. I'm sorry to hear that you're leaving. Maybe that's just the overall situation that is makig you feel uncomfortable here? If it is not, I hope you can stilll get in touch with the friends you made here. I'm very sorry about your grandmother too.
  22. PoC acoustic :wacky:
  23. /majorbump  I used the searching tools. I didn't notice until now this thread wasn't at the multimedia section. Here are new links to download the e-zines: mediafire | 4shared You can get a glimpse of what an e-zine is (or 'was', to be more precise) here. It was uploaded to our Brazilian fansite database. I hope you don't mind that I'm using one of our links here. Please, feel free to delete it if it's inappropriate :) If I may make a suggestion, it's a nice read to more recent fans (no slight intended here; I'm just not sure everybody knows of it :nice:).
  24. I really liked this acoustic version! A bit too much of this echo thing, but I quite like it :wacky:
  25. I agree with pretty much everything you say: if you like and believe in something, you'd better just cling to it, have some self-confidence and disregard fruitless comments. On the other hand, I don't agree with the implied idea that 'something specially dedicated to girls' is a bad thing (the negative assessment is implied by your saying you didn't care - if you thought it was positive, there would be no need to try to forget it). Anyways, I reinforce the above comments that this is pointless thread based in generalisations and, besides, some sense of superiority.
