The fanboy inside comes out every time Square One is mentioned! Its definitely one of the greatest album openers of all time. Also in the top 5 Coldplay songs ever for me. The perfect example of a classic Coldplay song. Also thanks for the videos they're great!

I've often wondered about this myself. Of course their main drive is their willingness to keep making music as a band. But as for how decisions get made on where to take their music I'm not sure. In the old days with Parachutes and AROBTTH they didn't particularly try to go in one direction or another; it was just four guys playing and creating whatever came through, and you could obviously hear that purity in the music. But after Viva things changed of course. I get the sense they're trying too hard to say something with their music now which isn't necessary at all if you just want to make a great rock album.

LP7 will most likely be very similar to MX but with EDM elements incorporated. Chris Martin is a genius at creating beautiful melodies but where MX really disappointed was the instrumentation, production and execution of the songs. So the album ended up being another mediocre pop record. Ghost Stories suffered from weaknesses too in that once again it lacked the sound most people look for in a Coldplay album and the lyrics were just terrible. I hope it doesn't turn out to be an album indistinguishable from MX. So they need to acknowledge all that was wrong with that album and try to produce something a lot better.

Well I actually teach English. I can only do it part time though and I'm not very good at it :D Anyway first let me assure you that habitually our writing standards immediately worsen when we're on the internet or using mobile devices, particularly in using correct grammar and punctuation. This is especially true for multilingual speakers and non-native speakers of English. So don't get too worked up about it. As far as I know until and till can be used interchangeably when talking about a period of time before something happens. As for 'til, I don't personally use or teach it. I wanted to wait a few days and get to properly listen to the albums a few times so I can reflect on it adequately. For me this band is up there with Pink Floyd as the greatest band of all time so you can imagine the agony that I've had to endure for the past 5 or so years waiting for an album to come out. And I cant really be bothered with a proper review so here it is: ITS BRILLIANT. Epic in every sense. How this band is still able to create such amazing music after so long is beyond me. I had lowered my expectations after NLOTH but this record just blew my mind. Also I love the fact that a lot of the younger generation struggle to find this stuff "interesting" or "relevant". Plus, The Guardian hates it, and that's always an indication of a great record! I can only hope Coldplay look at U2 and Foo Fighters and realize...

What a shame! You really have to wonder who makes these decisions. A huge error on the part of the band if they collectively agreed to not use this.

I find the whole thing very silly and never expected Chris to actually do it. Why do people in the US feel the need to advertise their charity work?! Why not just write a check or try to raise awareness by giving a speech or put links on your website or twitter to actually INFORM the public on ALS; because this is no doubt a worthy cause. Better still get involved locally with anyone who's been affected. Also, all these people are worth billions of dollars yet have only managed to raise around 40 million. Absolutely great analysis. My thoughts exactly! I was hoping they would pull a 2nd Law but it seems right now they're incapable or unwilling to challenge themselves musically.

The Panic Station video?! That was extremely creative and very funky in a rock and roll kind of way. You simply cannot compare the two. Muse are legendarily good at music videos. Its outrageous to compare them to Coldplay.

My feelings exactly. Its all very well if you think the video is cute and sweeeeet and funny, in which case I recommend you watch ninja turtles and high school musical, but their videos lack certain qualities that are unforgivable for a band of such status. Imagination, creativity, sophistication, originality, production, seriousness in some cases (for songs like True Love), performance based visuals and THE BAND. The video also needs to have a connection with the song and not just be "cute". Strawberry Swing is a perfect example of what they're capable of achieving. Its still effectively a love story but the video is very well thought out and greatly executed. I wiewd this once and it was so cringeworthy and uncomfortable to watch!

Terrible! Absolutely terrible. I cannot fathom how Will could let Chris get away with this stuff. Or the rest of the band for that matter. Such a shame murdering a beautiful and brilliant track like this. For the first time in a while their single had the potential to have an EPIC video but the result is extremely unimaginative, cliché and banal.

Agree with all your points. Collaboration with Brian Eno and Markus Dravs are wildly different to what Chris was trying to achieve with the avicciii guy on ASFOS. I believe the song should have never ended up on the album and Ghost Story should have replaced it. To then play it live on all occasions and for the song to turn out to be this huge "summer hit" just gave such a wrong vibe to the album that it completely misrepresented it.

That is exactly why I think In My Place and Fix You are so great! I also envisioned something similar for Major Minus but that of course never even made it as a single because of its edgier sound.

I think LP7 will be very similar to MX but with more EDM elements incorporated. As for what they'll do after that, I'm seriously hoping a long hiatus. If not, a 2 or 3 year break wouldn't hurt either. For LP8 they only have two options. Either completely reinvent themselves as band or finally go back to where they started. I think they need to stop playing it safe and realize adjusting your sound so that it pleases a wider audience is ultimately musically meretricious. Especially for a band THIS capable. A band that created AROBTTH.

Well you're right in that if they were to follow the cycle late 2015 would be plausible and reasonable. But I don't want them to follow the cycle you see! That would be epic!

Same here. I think all bands need to take a long break from making songs together at some point during their career and I've been saying this about Coldplay ever since VLV. 2015 is way too early for another album and I don't understand why they're rushing it. Same goes for GS in that I didn't expect anything so soon after MX. What I crave most is another TIMELESS Coldplay album. Something they've failed to achieve with MX and GS. (Both amazing records I'm sure so don't hate me for this). People are still just discovering AROBTTH now and they're blown away immediately.

Absolutely horrendous artwork. Their worst to date. If you want to know what the words cliché and generic mean just look at this. The song is truly epic but from the description of what they were filming for the video it seems that too is going to be cliché.
