Does This Song Remind Anyone of Kanye?
Yep! This song is a few steps away from being a hip hop song, in a good way. Its beat and synth-based instrumentation makes it comparable to some rap songs, like Homecoming as you said.

What coldplay song do you listen to when you want to cheer up?
Square One to magnify the bad feelings, Talk to remind myself what to do, Fix You to return to normal if not past normal. I can't listen to Strawberry Swing because it gives me mood swings.

Previously up with the birds?
2006 Toronto performance of Don't Panic with Jonny singing the 2nd verse....I love it. :D Very coherent theory. "Up with the birds" definitely fits when you sing it though.

How many coldplay songs can you play?
I know at least some part of every song, but I'll just name the ones I can do front to back. I realize it sounds like a lot, but really it means nothing since I'm not that good and am a shite singer and my bandmates aren't quite learning at the same pace as I have. :embarrassed: Parachutes: Don't Panic - piano, guitar Shiver - guitar Sparks - guitar Yellow - guitar, bass, drums Trouble - piano, bass, drums For You - piano AROBTTH: Politik - piano, guitar In My Place - piano, guitar, bass, drums GPASYUF - piano, guitar The Scientist - piano, guitar, bass, drums Clocks - piano Daylight - piano Green Eyes - guitar, piano Warning Sign - guitar, piano AROBTTH - guitar, piano Amsterdam - piano, guitar, bass Moses - guitar X&Y: Square One - piano What If - piano Fix You - keyboard/piano, guitar, bass, drums Talk - piano, guitar X&Y - piano Speed of Sound - piano, guitar A Message - piano, guitar Low - piano The Hardest Part - piano, guitar Swallowed in the Sea - piano, guitar, bass Till Kingdom Come - guitar, piano, bass Sleeping Sun - guitar VLV: Lost - piano/keyboard, guitar, bass, drums 42 - piano Lovers in Japan - piano, guitar, bass, drums Chinese Sleep Chant - guitar VLV - keyboard/piano Violet Hill - piano, guitar Strawberry Swing - piano, guitar, bass Death Will Never Conquer - guitar Prospekt's March: LITii - guitar, piano New stuff or LP5: Christmas Lights - piano, guitar UATW - piano, guitar, bass Charlie Brown - piano, guitar Major Minus - guitar Other: Billie Jean - guitar, bass Ring of Fire - guitar

Cultural references in new songs...
Here's the post. It's not some huge brilliant thing, but I think it's a better guess than this MX-related bollocks. :p

Cultural references in new songs...
Mm I guess it's kind of semantics thing. What I'm trying to say is that saying UATW sounds like a Parachutes song - any comparison of the sort - is a comparison that kind of undermines the lyrical uniqueness and musical quality of itself and LP5. On the other hand though, I get that comparing it to Parachutes is just a roundabout way to say it's a really bloody good song. In any case, I'm with you about UATW as a theme. In another thread, I had a decent paragraph about why I think it's the album title. :p

Cultural references in new songs...
As much as I like UATW, I don't think its lyrics are very Parachutes-esque at all. It's only like Parachutes because it's a stripped down song in my opinion. Parachutes lyrics are far less coherent than what's in UATW; a lot of songs take a phrase or two and repeat them in different ways. (Don't Panic, Yellow, Shiver, Trouble, High Speed, to name a few) So yeah, UATW's lyrics don't seem to be from Parachutes at all. And no way would they have such an overt biblical reference on a Parachutes song.

When you listen to Coldplay, you move like..
CHRIS. I had Lost stuck in my head one day while I was in the city and I walked down four blocks just flailing around. At least I didn't do any tumbling. >__> Btw, THIS. Can someone make a GIF of 1:49 - 1:51?! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EuTA4jlpWA]Head bobbling[/ame] Oh and I move like Thom Yorke, Lotus Flower style. :D

Cultural references in new songs...
Some smarter posters than me pointed out a Peter Pan reference in Major Minus - crocodiles ticking round the world. footyfan - I noticed the "I'm on a roll" line too! :D Christmas Lights has the Elvis reference, if that counts. But I'd agree that the last two albums have had a bit more of a grounding in reality compared to the perhaps more abstract and distant lyrics of the Parachutes through X&Y.

The new VIVA LA VIDA
^Or exactly twice? :p footyfan, I agree about the name; Cartoon Heart would be a little more Coldplay-esque. But I think now that I know the song and its lyrics, it makes a lot of sense to have the name it does. Besides, VLVoDAAHF is a pretty cheesy title. :p The new Viva la Vida? Probably ETIAW, POC, or something we haven't seen yet. CB is more of a Violet Hill or something.

Yes... it was a terrible mistake!!
Wow I had the exact same thing with Yes not more than a week ago! :D :D :D Another couple songs that I COMPLETELY misjudged were Amsterdam and Strawberry Swing, probably because my volume was too low when I first heard them. :embarrassed: But after a couple years of knowing these two songs, they're basically my favourite Coldplay songs EVER.

Should Coldplay use backing tracks?
Well speaking Lost, it would make a lot of sense if Chris just played organ on that (same setup as in Fix You), and then it would be all good. I think Lost also has a backing track for the drums and backup vocals in the 2nd and 3rd verses....perhaps unnecessary. :/ On the other hand, Jonny DOES play the organ in the 1st verse (also, the 1st half of VLV) but it appears that after he leaves the synthesizer it becomes a backing track. Same goes for Chris for the keyboard in LIJ.

Lover's In Japan Live (dont you miss it?)
Not really, but he does strain a *teensy* bit to hit the note on "see what I'm ALL about." But looking at his more recent singing in Christmas Lights and Charlie Brown in particular, as well as plain Chris in this year's tour, you can tell he's really tightening his game. And he's just a little less loosy goosy than he was during VLV so not only would he have better technique, but he'd also not to be super tired from an excess of dancing.

Should Coldplay use backing tracks?
Agreed about the "random schmuck" thing, well, I think. Yeah vocal ones are a bit too far in my opinion. But are you sure about Fix You? I never had any reason to suspect Guy and Jonny of lip-synching. The two of them are pretty good singers, the instrumental parts aren't *terribly* difficult, and the singing parts they have in the song are fairly reasonable for any male singer (unlike Chris and Will's, which actually require SERIOUS effort and therefore sound imperfect to an authentic extent). On the other hand, I think there is a backup vocal during the verses of Lost that is playback. If you watch the Tokyo 2009 performance, it's especially noticeable that someone is singing but you don't see Will singing. Whaaaaaa. o_O

Should Coldplay use backing tracks?
Yeah, trying to bring even a string quartet everywhere seems like a hassle. And that calls into question whether you find extra musicians as a detractor in a performance. (maybe I should start a thread about that too :p) I guess with a band like Oasis, I always wished they would add "Jesus" to the band as a full member. NOEL GALLAGHER STYLE? :D The Viva tour was very characteristic of this, but I think Chris has tightened himself up on the most recent tour - a much better balance between audience interaction and focus on the music. Well, back in the day, Muse used backing tracks on songs like Bliss, Stockholm Syndrome, Butterflies and Hurricanes....now they have Morgan Nichols. Hmm... I'm thinking of a song like Trouble though...no backing tracks needed. I believe after X&Y, Brian Eno has been more involved with the backing tracks and we all know how everyone feels about him. :p Agreed (although I have a feeling they all know how anyways :p). But "whenever possible"? They certainly haven't reached that status yet. The piano in the beginning of Violet Hill comes to mind.

Whoops sorry! The poll asked the opposite of the thread title, but I fixed it....so your vote may be backwards juan. :embarrassed:

Should Coldplay use backing tracks?
What do you guys think? There are a lot of arguments for and against them, but I have a lot of conflicted feelings that I hope this thread can help towards resolving. For: -Chris gets to dance more -Less mistakes (well, not necessarily: see In My Place at Main Square) -Bigger, better sound. -No need for extra musicians on songs like VLV, LIT. -Most bands use them (or extra musicians)...power "trios" come to mind like Muse and Green Day. Against: -More honest, which is part of the appeal of Parachutes, which had NO backing tracks. -Unnecessary in some cases, especially on AROBTTH songs. The Scientist doesn't REALLY need those strings. -The band could certainly play the parts live; for example, instead of Chris dancing around at the end of Fix You, he could just sit down and play organ. Note: this thread is not about whether they use backing tracks, because it's abundantly evident that they have on nearly everything since AROBTTH. Anyways, discuss!
