1. Only time will tell. I agree with you that they are now "older," their kids are getting older, they just did one of the year's biggest tours, and to me seeing them live, it certainly felt like a tour that tried hard to combine all of their greatest efforts and eras. In other words, almost a celebration or farewell tour. With all that spectacle and color, it's hard to imagine what they would do next. Plus you do have some indication from the band that maybe they'll take a break..... BUT on the other hand--this has been one of their most productive eras. During this tour, they've recorded a great EP, wrote another song soon to be released, and have taken a studio on tour with them! This tour has had great covers, soundcheck writing, great guests, and cool improv songs. More is that the band has said in interviews that they feel the most like a band in a long time, and are having a lot of fun writing music. So maybe the break will only be a few months in 2018 before we get new material? I personally am optimistic and subscribe to the latter. I think that they have many albums left in store--but whether those albums will feel like traditional eras and tours remains to be seen. Modern music is proving that groups can easily release music digitally and release a lot of material, singles, EP's because album sales don't matter as much.
2. Last night Chris changed some of the lyrics up a bit like saying "All of the kids" instead of boys. Also seems like he didn't know the words at a few spots. Also, there is an audible "do to eachother as you would be done" children's vocal. To me that either means he just had a sloppy performance, or, they actually haven't recorded a final version of the lyrics. So release may be a bit off still.
3. Seriously!! It's great to hear them writing music in different genres that aren't strictly "pop" like AHFOD was. All these improvised tracks have been very rootsy!
4. So apparently they played a special track with Jon Hopkins tonight. (internally screaming). Can we confirm whether it was an improvised "Houston #1" type track or are they collaborating again?????
5. Agreed it feels much more polished and ready for a studio release! It sounds so Viva! WE NEED THE STUDIO VERSION NOWWWWww Edit: Although I kind of prefer Jonny's guitar verses on the earlier version because they felt kinda country, now they feel more classic coldplay
6. If they release it, I am guessing right before their next show on the 7th. So if not this Friday, then who knows. Maybe LP8
7. ^Being a Thursday, there's still a slim chance they release it tonight (I tell myself every week)
8. ^ Good analysis. One of my fave Coldplay profiles is the 60 Minutes interview in 2008 (I love 60 Minutes). In that interview Chris comes off as jumpy, zany, neurotic, maybe a bit ADHD? Fast forward ten years and he's calm, collected, not terribly worried, at least in his public persona. I too have noticed that he definitely sympathizes with pop artists more than he used to--but I think that is with any artist. My take is that like all of us, his tastes have changed. We all go through phases of music in our lives, and its not to say that we don't enjoy what we used to (I still love emo and hardcore punk from my younger days), but you just develop new tastes. For Chris, and even Will, I think having kids and youthfulness back in their life means more pop music, more radio friendly stuff, and that helps you slag off your former apprehensions with those genres. It means you give Bieber's or Ariana a chance, and then you come to appreciate the undeniable hooks. I wonder if Chris' new found love for pop is partly out of jealousy? Pursuit for that perfect hook and catchy melody? I don't mean this to sound mean, but I do think Coldplay, as humble as they are, do have a bit of an ego (which they've earned) and a desire that has persisted from their early years to be THE BEST. And to be the best today for them just means making quality, chart-topping music. Hopefully that changes.
9. Haha I wasn't even aware there was a new season coming! I don't even remember what really happened last season.. Let me know if its worth a watch!
10. ^Odd indeed. Maybe the studio single could be attached to the live album later on? That'd be cool, but I am beginning to doubt it. I can't imagine the song without all the "Ole Ole Ole Ole's." Bummer.
11. Another Friday and no release. Maybe they'll release it on November 3rd to shake up excitement for the last shows? Or as a bonus track on the unofficial live album? Sigh.....
12. According to this French Celebrity Tracker Coldplay are in studio with in Paris with a soccer player I've never heard of. No signs of slowing down it looks like. Could this be confirming the theory that LiB is for World Cup? Mobile Link: https://twitter.com/celebsinparis/status/919984225323012096
13. Some have pointed out that Don Quixote actually became DLIBYH---there is a soundcloud video posted on Reddit ( I can't find it now) that plays the songs side-by-side. Needless to say some of the chords and the vocal delivery are nearly identical. Also, great time to point out that DLIBYH is one of Coldplay's most underrated songs, and when played live, one of their best. The xylophones! The cymbals! The piano! Yes maybe it wasn't recorded great on record, but live Jonny's guitar during the verses is stunning. At one moment aggressive and dark, the next carefree and bright. So amazing. Don't believe me, go to 2:00 on the above video and enjoy :) Wowzers. MX at one of its best moments.
14. ...................no announcement, no teaser................:cold_sweat:................."all the benefits this track generates....".................??????? How can you generate benefits if you aren't selling the track? Or do you mean "vibe" benefits?? As in all the good vibes are going to mexico? Song isn't on ASCAP yet. Hope they release it tonight! (or tomorrow if you're in the UK)
15. ^ Yeah, it doesn't fully satisfy the Oldplayer craving for the original Don Quixote, but it is a great step forward (or backward), to energetic rock music with plenty of fun instrumenation. The lyrics are what's so bothersome here, and the incessant chants throughout. Crossing fingers that the studio version gets rid of some of that and just lets the instrumental do its thing. Sounds like Jonny actually has some folksy great finger-picking during the verses! Recent tracks like Birds, Up&Up, AICTAIY, are great because they avoid an over reliance on chants and let the instruments do the talking, not Chris' hooting. Hoping that the studio version is a new classic. I will say that "we're all born equal, under the same sun, so do to eachother as you'd be done" ranks on my worst Coldplay lyrics list right along with "once upon a time we fell apart, you're holding in your hands the two halves of my heart," and "Got a tattoo and the pain's alright, just want a way of keeping you in sight." I guess its forgivable since its so well-meaning, but its rhetorical on like a 3-year old child level.
16. Excited to hear the studio version! I agree with some above comments that the track feels a bit incomplete, especially lyrically. But I too can forgive it, because the message is so loving and earnest. I'll be curious to see if they are planning on putting live crowd "ole's" into the final product. If so, that would maybe take a week or so for them to mix? And also, I question whether or not I'll personally enjoy a live crowd in the track--other bands, like 30 Second to Mars, have totally overdone crowd participation, while Arcade Fire's Everything Now organically mixed the crowd. The final thing to wonder is if the song will include those "oh ohhh oh ohhs" and "la da, da da" in the verses--I'm not a particular fan of those parts because they feel lazy, but then again the final mix could prove me wrong. Overall an electrifying performance! Has the vibes of a post-Viva, early MX track. Wasn't expecting something so enormous and fast paced. Is this Coldplay's fastest tempo song yet?
17. Nice catch^ That is either a secret code or a lack of adjectives on R42's part. In all honesty though, that would be a bad title, kind of self inflating and vague. "Something Just LIke This" for example is a cringy title. Maybe it will be called: Miracles (((beautiful something))) :confounded: As for those soundchecks above, the second sounds like Graceland to me, though I like it a lot. The first sounds much more likely to be a new track, with that bouncy bass. Only a few hours away! Hope its a studio version and not just a live one.
18. ^I don't think so, it sounds mostly like it is a going to be a charity single or one-off thing--probably something they've had a while and want to release (Don Quixote would be amazing). I like the fact that A L I E N S is also technically a viva era "demo" they are now using as a charity single. This isn't the right thread for this kind of speculation though, but remember how the band said it was touring with a studio in Asia and how Roadie 42 was writing about how they were recording backstage? Well when they were in Australia, we know they basically only had to wrap up the feature on Miracles Someone Special......so whatever they have been recording and writing on tour WAS NOT for the Kaleidoscope EP. They probably had all those tracks finished in 2016, but were waiting on music videos, promotions, etc. Guy also said in an interview that they might do something more acoustic.... Are we gonna get an early 2018 surprise album drop that is purely acoustic and recorded really roughly on tour? I guess answer in the LP8 thread if you want to speculate!
19. I think their new live performances come out a necessity that their last two records dictate. AHFOD and GS, as the band have said, have many songs that are programmed and not performed on live instruments. Meanwhile, they have a whole catalog of songs that are instrumentally stunning when performed live. For better AND worse, I think this makes AHFOD Tour their most modern and "pop" yet. I saw them last year, and was actually shocked how much I enjoyed AHFOD as an intro track with The Dictator. The song was explosive and fun live, though on record its easily my least favorite intro to a Coldplay album ever. It was disappointing knowing that the backdrop of nearly every track on this tour was not performed live in hindsight, but that said, they also have been able to squeeze an impressive number of songs into their setlist and its a wild ride. Some of the best moments of the show, I remember, were not even performed really, like the Midnight interlude and the Paradise Remix, Kaleidoscope.... I largely agree with everyone here, but also, I think the more modern pop and carnival like feel they are going for with their music and concerts means that you sacrifice musicianship for spectacle--and that's partly why the tickets cost so darn much. P.S. I wish they'd do a 10-year anniversary tour for Viva. Those songs have been so neglected.
20. Crazy we are already a few months away from AHFOD's 2nd Birthday. I feel like I have already consumed every review, interview, article, etc of the album, but still feel like we are missing a track-by-track breakdown? With (almost) every other album I feel like we got an idea of what they were going for on each track, but I feel like they have hardly commented on AHFOD, Birds, Kaleidoscope, Fun, Army of One, Amazing Day? And for most the KEP tracks as well.... Anybody have some piece of media that I missed that gets more into it?
21. My dream Coldplay setlist would be a Viva 10-year anniversary shows where they focus on celebrating the best Oldplay deep cuts with an emphasis on darker songs for a select few shows. The shows would also be notably longer and more intense! Here's what I'd love to hear, and as you'll see, not a single song is very "happy." :) Main Stage 0. Charlie Chaplin Intro with Live 2003 intro sounds jangles fades out.... 1. Politik with Live 2017 backdrop video, fades out.. 2. Cemeteries in London guitar outro fades into... 3. Spies (alt. version) 4. GPASUYF (2012 version) 5. The Scientist 6. I Ran Away 7. Yes (explosive outro with Will's drum solo) 8. Midnight (laser show) B-Stage 9. Trouble 10. Warning Sign 11. Talk (Techno Version) -- rest of band leaves 12. Hardest Part/Postcards (LRLR version) Main Stage 13. Square One 14. White Shadows 15. Daylight 16. Amsterdam Encore at C-stage 17. Don't Panic (Jonny lead vocals) 18. Now My Feet Won't Touch The Ground 19. A Message 20. Til Kingdom Come Main Stage: 21. 42 22. Reign of Love (piano into...) 23. DAAOHF Second Encore 24. Life In Technicolor ii 25. Everything's Not Lost (Glastonbury Version)
22. I was frankly disappointed with Ghost Stories Live. There barely a thing different with those recordings and the crowd cheering was insufferable on a few tracks. I'm excited about AHFOD live though, for a few reasons. I absolutely love the new version of Us Against the World (Silver Bird). All the KEP tracks performed so far have been great! Army of One was much better live, and I think the title track too is much more exciting and dance-able when performed live. Plus we'll have the awesome Up&Up outro! Should be a solid live release since this tour has been so solid.
23. Its like any other high, once its over and you're back in reality, you feel down. I saw them almost exactly a year ago right before starting a tedious semester at school. It was two hours of pure ecstasy and joy followed by a ten hour drive home and tons of homework. I felt down for maybe a week after (also for other reasons), but after a while it became just a great memory to take with you everywhere! Sorry that's something you have to go through!
24. I think its an important stepping stone for Coldplay after AHFOD. For those of us (and critics) lamenting Coldplay's attempt at pure happiness and glowing vibes on AHFOD, the EP holds some of the top 5 songs in the era, easily. And even the Roses/Closer mashup feat. Coldplay (SJLT) feels cathartic and fun if you can forget the Chainsmokers are terrible humans. MSS proves they can make real groovy music fit into their musical repertoire without losing solid song-writing fundamentals and rich production (something AHFOD as an album seemed to lack on a few tracks). Looking back, I think it will be a typically forgotten B-side release for most fans, but a treasure trove for Coldplayers in future years to say, "at least we got Kaleidoscope as a counterweight to the lackluster AHFOD." Looking forward, I believe these tracks might be an indication of Coldplay going back to a more rock oriented sound--and we know they are continuing to work and write on their current tour. And after all the build up to AHFOD and some of the disappointment that came after, I think the singles from this EP show a diverse number of directions Coldplay could go and remain successful.
25. They're tough to combine I think, mostly because the songs are all over the board, but I think this would be a superior record to the original. EDIT: I really can't justify putting ALIENS or AICTAIY on the album...I made a playlist and listened to my new mix and those two songs were so jarringly out of place with their darker tones that it just didn't feel right. 1. AHFOD (with Charlie Chaplin's "The Dictator") 2. Birds 3. HFTW 4. Everglow (Acoustic) 5. AOAL 6. Kaleidoscope 7. Amazing Day 8. Miracles (Someone Special) --synth fades into... 9. Hypnotised EP Mix 10. Colour Spectrum 11. Up&Up Bonus Addition with extra songs: 1. AICTAIY 2. Army of One 3. X Marks The Spot 4. Fun 5. ALIENS and SJLT????? It would just be on the Chainsmoker's Album and nowhere else forever locked away no no no goodbye but you're kinda catchy..
