  1. I will have to read this since I just finished the book "Climate Capitalism" Such an important topic and one of my areas of study at my university. Glad you liked that one!
  2. I would like to see him return in some capacity, though I doubt he will. Viva was my favourite era and he played a huge part in that, and I also personally love MX's production on almost every track, so I would love to have him back for his artistic push and the kind of odd, wonky atmospheres he has helped the band create. Plus, he made Chris leave sometimes so the rest of the band could push themselves :) Other than that, I would love to see production from Flood, Jon Hopkins, maybe Danger Mouse, Daniel Lanois, Nigel Godrich, hell, even Rick Ross. More Simpson and Green! I would rather not see Timbaland, Epworth or Avicii again! I would be okay with Madeon again, but I would mostly like to see the boys make the music. Just a guess, but I think AHFOD might have the most outside production, for better or worse, on a Coldplay record yet.
  3. I too think this is more likely a Rihanna track. Looking at those producers and their past works, it just seems highly unlikely they would work on a Coldplay song considering they are a production group that usually writes entire songs for pop singers. Sure, they could have a hand in production potentially on AHFOD, but it just seems unlikely seeing how Coldplay is, you know, a band who writes their own stuff and doesn't really need that level of production (atleast I would hope.) And if it is a Coldplay song, then we should expect it to be dancey and a chart smasher, since the recent work of that production group with Maroon 5, U2, Diddy, etc.
  4. Rihanna has some big months ahead of her with new material, so whether or not this is a track intended for her should be revealed shortly I would hope! I have a few questions though for those of you who understand these databases better. What is the difference between PRS and ASCAP? Why would different songs be registered on different databases and what does that mean? Apparently Coldplay used PRS for some of Mylo Xyloto, but most of their songs are actually on ASCAP? Does the fact that this track can be found on PRS make it more likely that this is a collaboration with Rihanna? If this is for the dreamworks film and will thus be released on a relating label, then can we confirm said label uses this database more often for its soundtracks? Sorry if that doesn't make sense.
  5. Amazing to think this album is that old now, but I have to say that it has aged well. No matter how much criticism is leveled at this thing, it will always have some of my favourite production choices of any album ever: swirling, sharp guitars dancing in reverb, transcendent organ, occasional glitchy synths, heavy bass. Totally agree though that while it has some of Coldplay's most incredible, hard hitting work, it is very much overblown occasionally and the album itself is an odd mix of songs that don't necessarily work well together. Plus, it was certainly a wake up call for Chris to improve his lyrics after a few tracks.. but nonetheless, I still believe this album is ahead of its time, and was no doubt inspiring to all of us and many artists to come. I wish Coldplay would revisit it more often, because while this was a hugely successful album, they and many critics underrate its masterpiece.
  6. Well, Kanye, Rihanna, and Sir Paul just dropped the track, which I presume is the first single for Rihanna's new record. I think it is pretty good. Similar to Kanye's "Only One" which was nice and stripped back but I think very pretty. Must mean Rihanna's new album is coming soon, and so we should know if Coldplay or Chris Martin will be featuring at all, I hope so!! Nothing makes a great pop start better than having good songwriters!
  7. I always loved music growing up, and my parents played for me tons of classic rock and pop: Prince, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Queen, James Taylor, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Simon and Garfunkle, Paul Simon, and lots of Red Hot Chili Peppers!!!! (old and new) I really loved that stuff and still do, but when I entered middle school, I pretty much was only into top 40 music and Pop punk and Emo bands like Hawthorne Heights, Story of the Year, Brand New, and still some of my favourite bands: Blink-182 and My Chemical Romance, and my other all time favourite still, Red Hot Chili Peppers. In the eight grade, however, in 2008 for me, Coldplay dropped VLV. I always knew their radio hits and a few other songs here and there, but I bought this album on a whim and instantly was in love. I quickly bought the rest of their albums and just consumed all of it all of the time. A few years later, I joined this forum and by my senior year in high school, MX dropped, which I loved. Coldplay truly was a breaking point for me, their music was just barely alternative enough for me to start getting into a huge Indie pop movement that was sweeping through my region in the U.S. I quickly began listening to Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, St. Vincent, The Decembrists, Arcade Fire, Blind Pilot, The Head and the Heart, Iron and Wine to name a few. Radiohead followed shortly after, rising to be one of my favourite bands, and began expanding my tastes almost entirely outside pop radio. In my most recent years in college, I really have acquired some serious tastes for a little bit of everything. I love bluegrass and traditional folk music from my region, indie rock/pop, hardcore emo, black metal, post-rock, hardcore punk music, electronic dance and atmospheric music, jazz, but most recently, I have been overwhelmed with hip-hop/rap and listen to it almost constantly. To me, it is the new rock and roll and the hip hop artists in this decade, both popular and underground, are some of the most innovative, exciting, and important in the music industry right now in my opinion.
  8. 1. Postcards From Far Away--This song kills me everytime. 2. I Bloom Blaum--So damn gorgeous. 3. The Goldrush--So fun and catchy. Honorable mentions: All of Viva era, How You See The World (Part Two), I Ran Away, Gravity, See You Soon, Moving To Mars. Everything.
  9. Nightcrawler--9/10--A really great thrill ride with an interesting character and VERY important things to say about the state of modern TV news and media. The Hunt--9/10--Really tense, powerful movie that has a ton of interesting things to think about. On Netflix (in U.S.) starring Mads Mikkelsen. Birdman--8/10-- This movie has a lot of hype behind it and I really liked it for its awesome performances and cinematography, I just couldn't really get into the motives and themes of the characters as much as I would have liked. Whiplash--10/10-- YOU GOTTA SEE THIS MOVIE. Like the above film it is up for "Best Picture" at the Academy Awards and is not very favourited, but it blew me away. I bit my finger the whole movie because I was so nervous and the two leads are amazing.
  10. Give Radiohead more time, and listen to their album "In Rainbows," which is absolutely breathtaking. This band pushes their sound a lot so it takes a while to get used to, but once you do, it is totally worth it. Some of my favourite bands that I visit often that do "alternative," sorts of music that I think is also very accessible: Electronic/Dream Pop: Chvrches, Hundred Waters, Beach House, The Antlers, Chromatics. Alternative Rock: The National (especially their most recent records) Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, Alt-J, Death Cab for Cutie, Spoon, Beach Fossils, Sigur Ros Folk/Alternative: The Avett Brothers, Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, The Decembrists, Radical Face, Trampled By Turtles. Singer Songwriters: Perfume Genius, Elliot Smith, Sufjan Stevens, Bat For Lashes. Sorry, for the big list, I could go on, but I think these are all really great groups that share some sounds with Coldplay. I strongly recommend at least checking out the top songs few tracks of each of these artists to get a taste and if you like it, then delve in deeper !! :)
  11. If a studio version of this track ended up on the album, I would probably die of excitement and give it a 10/10 review regardless of what every other song sounded like. WHY DIDN'T THEY RELEASE MORE GYPSY (eastern European) SOUNDING SONGS!?!? Not to dis on my native tongue, but why not mix up the language, I think a french version of the title sounds far more appealing: "Un esprit plein de rêves" or "Une tête pleine de rêves" Or latin? "A caput plena somnia" Or perhaps that will be received as pretentious or trying to hard to be artsy?
  12. ^ Likewise. I have softened up to AHFOD's title, but I still think it feels a little clunky and perhaps cheesy. It also sounds like, judging by the interviews, that this title is going to stick, since Guy and Jonny both acknowledged it has been the title since Ghost Stories was in the works ,and that it is typically the first thing completed for the album. I still wish that it was Ahead Full Of Dreams. That certainly sounds less cheesy and more mysterious and ready for interesting sounds to me.
  13. It feels more likely to me that this is not an artistic choice to go slow, but probably a personal preference for them nowadays. All their kiddos are getting older, and considering that each of these guys is so damn genuine and nice, I just don't see them committing weeks upon weeks in the studio like they did when they were younger. Certainly a hiatus would mean they can really take their time on the next one and settle down and hang with their families more. During the BBC interviews I definately got the impression that they were really excited to have a big vacation from performing coming up. Especially with Guy and Jonny. Not trying to say that they don't but an immense amount of work into each album, put I am betting that is going to become more of a reality for them.
  14. 1. We Never Change --Love this song, but not as good as the others. 2. In My Place-- I think this song is really dull, especially following Politik. Hook kind of annoys me actually. 3. What If-- Still a fine song, but really dislike the lyrics and the extremely melodramatic tone. Do like Guy's bass and Jonny's guitar though. 4. Viva La Vida-- This album is near perfect to me, like AROBTHH, and I really like this song, I just LOVE the others. 5. Up In Flames-- This song is hogwash. Really dull, incredibly cringey lyrics, nice piano, but my least favourite Coldplay track ever. It is obvious that it was the last one scuddled for the album. 6. ASFOS-- Really wish this song didn't come out like it did. Really great elements, like the piano and Chris' really earnest delivery, but the heavy synth production and generic themes and structure make rather annoying and simplistic without being beautiful or all that fun in my opinion.
  15. Why settle with only 10 or 11? I know that number has been working great for them on every record, but what if they make a double album? I remember before the Red Hot Chili Peppers (one of my other favourite bands) went on hiatus, they released Stadium Arcadium, a double album where (in my opinion) The sheer adventure and diversity of tracks kept the entire 28 songs all extremely quality. Another example of something that would be cool is what My Chemical Romance did in 2013. They realized they were breaking up so they released 5 two track EP's of songs that were intended to be their 4th album, but halfway through they ditched it because they didn't like the way it felt (much like Coldplay before the Mylo era.) It would be awesome if they released an incomplete album that had Car Kids and Spanish Rain and other tracks like that. I don't think Coldplay would make a double record, and they probably won't release any old b-sides that didn't make it, but if they released a ton of material in the LP7 era it would have to mean a ton of songs with all sorts of tastes to suit all of us fans. At the very least, I am hoping for a Prospekt's March style EP.
  16. It returns on February 8th! You got plenty of time to catch all the way up!
  17. Holy Moly! They are!? Hinting at something? Or just fan service? Maybe songs are in a certain order? I doubt that, but they are dispersed quite randomly. Would it be too hopeful to expect a single uploaded suddenly? *sighs while realizing yes...*
  18. Lord this was tough, but I have nothing to do today so here it goes. (I grouped together interludes on MX, sorry if that screws up the song count, and also had to do top twenty because ten is two few and honestly they are nearly interchangeable :) ) Top Twenty Coldplay Songs in My Humble Opinion 1. 19. Sorry to add to the debate, Rihanna has a great voice, and I think it is unique and beautiful. The problem is that most the songs written for her force her to sing like a diva which can get really annoying after a while. On PoC or Disturbia for example she is just way too dramatic and her lyrics suck, which is unfortunate because I think the song is really cool sounding. Her constant radio hits though can become a bit irritating because of how poppy and fake they feel. She is a real talent though, I just am not a huge fan of all of her music (which she doesn't really make anyways.) Anyways, here is a great performance of two songs I really love by her. Notice the first could easily be similar sounding to something Coldplay would do with her, maybe being her band, while she sings an emotional track. It could work, though I wish they would work with someone else. [video=youtube;6cVYWn22ueY]
  20. Postcards From Faraway.
  21. Haha :) Andrea was such a bad character. I think they had to take her out because her character made absolutely no sense. Truly a disaster of writing, same with Laure. It is unfortunate that TV shows don't know how to write female characters. They always try to make them moody or "sympathetic," and they come off as completely illogical and frustrating haha
  22. Thank you! I am sure other coldplayers have far better answers or different perspectives too!
  23. You would like two weeks by FKA twigs so you should check it out! Can't help you on the others though haha just a matter of taste. Yeah Coldplay does need to really mix something up to be truly classic and amazing with LP7, I am with you. I think they have done great stuff on every album, and I am sorry you haven't liked post AROBTTH, that is a bummer. But I sure would like another song like Politik. My favorite song by them. Just don't see it happening, but we could be surprised by something else.
  24. Hi! You ain't bothering nobody! We love this stuff. I can only give you my interpretations so here it goes! For Parachutes I honestly think that the band just took the picture and really liked it. You might also associate the globe with their success but the soft warm photo to me has always represented the mood of the album which is introspective melancholy, searching for love and hope and dealing with common insecurity in a big and sometimes scary world. For XY, the cover is a particular font that says X&Y, though you will have to forgive me for not remembering entirely what it is. For me, this cover represents modern computing and codes, which match the themes of insecurity, searching for purpose and dealing with identity problems when the world is becoming increasingly digital and perhaps fabricated and inhuman. Much of the albums lyrics lament on modern times or the future, and really try to break out of the status quo and search for human meaning through all the white noise. It also feels like a desperate attempt to connect with others, hence the message on the album cover.
  25. @dalekslayer-- :) I am impressed too hahaha and I appreciate the responses! Well firstly I will list some tracks in the top 40 this year that I thought were pretty good, though I doubt I can change your opinion. These are only tastes after all, and please don't get me wrong, cheap electronics and crappy themes have been a big problem for me too with lots of music, but so was post grunge in the early 2000's (nickelback or seether anyone?) anyways, a few examples-- Take Me To Church- hozier Turn Down For What-Dj snake. Riptide-Vance joy. Stay with me- sam smith. don't-ed Sheeran. Blank space- Taylor swift, uptown funk, 0-100-drake, beyonces self titled record, stolen dance-Milkey chance, two weeks-fka twigs. And no, I don't think that Coldplay makes abnormal music. In the grand scheme of things they are very safe. However, they do experiment just enough to fit outside the pure pop spectrum. Look at much of the atmospheres they put out the Viva era or weird, non poppy sounds loosely scattered throughout MX. Even GS has some distinct sounds despite its clean production and heavy pop song structures. What I really mean though is that ultimately I come to Coldplay for the simplicity and easy, beautiful sounds that have just enough artfulness to not sound cheap. I love darkside too, just for less common moods and settings. But yeah dude, it is just my opinion haha f it lets go bowling.
