  1. Surprise! Foiled Liberty City Terror Plotter Was Working For Feds Master G.J.G Atheea Was Alleged Spiritual Adviser FBI Later Used Him As An Informant CBS4 News | July 18, 2006 By Brian Andrews DOWNTOWN MIAMI CBS-4 News has learned a person targeted by the FBI early on in the investigation into the so-called Liberty City Seven had a falling out with the group and became a government informant weeks before the feds made arrests in the case. Court records obtained by CBS4's Brian Andrews say Master G.J.G. Atheea, a "Moses" like figure who wears dark glasses and carries a wooden staff, was accused ring leader Narseal Batiste's spiritual guide. After a falling out …

Doctor, 2 nurses held in Katrina deaths Arrest order says morphine used, second-degree murder charges filed The Associated Press Updated: 3:09 p.m. ET July 18, 2006 NEW ORLEANS - A doctor and two nurses who worked through the chaos that followed Hurricane Katrina were arrested overnight, accused of giving four patients stranded at their hospital lethal doses of morphine and a sedative, authorities said Tuesday. “We’re not calling this euthanasia. We’re not calling this mercy killings. This is second-degree murder,” said Kris Wartelle, a spokeswoman for Attorney General Charles C. Foti. 4. Mideast crisis drives Bush to 'colourful' language Mon 17 Jul 2006 7:21 AM ET (Adds quotes, details; Eds note strong language in paragraphs 1, 6) ST PETERSBURG, Russia, July 17 (Reuters) - A microphone picked up an unaware U.S. President George W. Bush saying on Monday Syria should press Hizbollah to "stop doing this shit" and that his secretary of state may go to the Middle East soon. Bush was talking privately to British Prime Minister Tony Blair during a lunch at the Group of Eight summit in St Petersburg about an upsurge of violence in the Middle East, not realising a microphone was transmitting what he said. "I think Condi (Secretary of State Condoleezza R…

This is a letter sent to a friend of mine by a man living in Bombay. Some of the content may offend some Americans on the board...Nick, I'm thinking of you...I'm not posting it to America-bash. I'm posting it as a pacifist who agrees with the last paragraph. It's just an opinion and it's not here to hurt anyone's feelings. Think it over. Richard, . Truth be told, we still feel extremely safe here in Bombay particularly and in India in general. Both my kids understand the randomness of violence as well as the fact that people do all kinds of things—none of us here really believe in the concept of ‘good’ and ‘evil’ so that helps. They’re dealing very well with the …

Twelve months after Live 8, I interviewed Sir Bob Geldof on the issue of global poverty, corporate social responsibility, the Bill Gates-Warren Buffett mega- foundation and the problems confronting the Doha round of world trade negotiations. GELDOF: I don't want to talk about this corporate social responsibility stuff. It's not something I am hugely interested in, I have to say. Business might have a role but it's a minor role. But go on. SOX FIRST: So does that mean you're not interested in Bill Gates helping fund your work? GELDOF: But I think that's a phenomenon of individuals rather than corporations inasmuch that at a certain point, this stuff that you've go…

WASHINGTON - Women who consult with pregnancy resource centers often get misleading information about the health risks associated with having an abortion, according to a report issued Monday by Democrats on the House Government Reform Committee. Congressional aides, posing as pregnant 17-year-olds, called 25 pregnancy centers that have received some federal funding over the past five years. The aides were routinely told of increased risk for cancer, infertility and stress disorders, said the report, which was prepared for Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. Only a small fraction of the more than 4,000 pregnancy clinics nationwide get any federal funding, mostly f…

THE World Cup so proudly taken home by the winning Italian footballers soon became a trophy of two halves. The players were accused yesterday of breaking it after the controversial final on Sunday. A piece of the 14in-high cup snapped off during the celebrations that followed Italy’s penalty shoot-out victory over France. Officials were said to be so alarmed that they considered cancelling a victory parade for the team. Concerns were raised after an Italian newspaper published photographs taken on the team bus as the heroes returned to Rome. One shows a worried-looking Fabio Cannavaro, the team captain, holding up a piece of the green edging at the base of the…

With the spreading violence in Lebanon and Gaza, the Israeli doctrine of absolute security and massive retaliation — the notion that any attack or threat of attack on Israel will be met with a disproportionate response — is again proving counterproductive to Israel's own security as well as to the larger stability of the region. It makes no sense for Israel to destroy the civil infrastructure of the Palestinians and of Lebanon in response to the kidnapping of its soldiers, or to further weaken the capacity of the governments of Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority while at the same trying to hold them accountable for the actions of groups and militias they cannot reasona…

  12. I drove past three teenagers dressed in hoodies on a baking hot day the afternoon David Cameron suggested we should afford them greater understanding. Were they making a fashion statement? Was it a tribal uniform? Or were they trying to be intimidating? Unlike the Tory leader, I am not really interested in understanding what they intended. The effect of what they wear and the way they wear it spooks people - and they know it. It scares old folk, kids on their own going to and from school, indeed anyone in a vulnerable situation or of a nervous disposition. In my day, it was Doc Marten boots, half-mast tartan trousers and skinheads. They dressed like that to be "hard…

Thousands of protesters have thronged the streets of central Damascus to wave Syrian and Hezbollah flags and shout their support for Hassan Nasrallah, the Lebanese Shia group's leader. Monday's state-organised protest is the first large-scale demonstration in Syria since Israeli and Hezbollah began attacking each other last Tuesday. But elsewhere in the Syrian capital there are few indications that the country could soon bear the brunt of Israel's firepower. Shops and cafes are as bustling as ever and the capital's hotels still brim with thousands of Lebanese nationals and foreign tourists - including many who have fled from Beirut over the past three or four …

Like every important event, the war in Lebanon has already given us a large variety of spin-words and banal political clichés. It comes from Israel, Lebanon and the international community. A leader usually throws an expression into the air that the ordinary citizen will pick up and relay to every passing TV camera. So here it is ? the first big parade of words. Readers can suggest additions by sending them to [email protected]. As long as it takes: Usually means as long as the U.S. administration allows it to happen. In the current crisis the Americans are sensing there?s a genuine opportunity to weaken Hezbollah. They will feel obligated to intervene so…

A third of children in the UK use blogs and social network websites but two thirds of parents do not even know what they are, a survey suggests. The children's charity NCH said there was "an alarming gap" in technological knowledge between generations. Even when parents had put controls on what youngsters could access, almost half the 1,003 children aged 11 to 16 surveyed said they could disable them. The NCH said families had to learn more about technology to protect children. 'Worldly wisdom' A tenth of the 11-year-olds who took part in the survey said their parents did not know about the people with whom they communicated online. And 13% revealed …

The entertainment industry has been threatened with possible law changes if it does not tackle the problem of ticket touting by next summer. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said "targeted action and changes in legislation" could be considered to stop exploitation of "genuine fans". Ms Jowell also announced an action plan after talks with industry leaders. This includes allowing people to return tickets and the setting up of a website to allow exchanges at face value. "The innocent victim of ticket touting is the fan who has to pay through the nose for a vastly overpriced ticket to see their sporting, stage or musical hero," said Ms Jowell. "These are the …

At least 80 people have been killed in a tsunami triggered by an earthquake off the island of Java, aid agencies in Indonesia said. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.2, struck off the town of Pangandaran at 1519 local time (0819 GMT), causing a two-metre-high wave. One resident, Teti, said high waves had destroyed hotels in Pangandaran and thrown boats onto the beach. "Waves suddenly came and we ran to the hills," she told local radio. Seeking refuge "Many small hotels were destroyed," she said. "Boats have been thrown into hotels." At least 2,000 people are also thought to have been displaced from the area. A drug counsellor from the north-east of England trapped in Lebanon by Israeli air strikes has said she fears for her life. Clair Vainola, 31, from Newcastle, has been working in the capital Beirut since last November. She said she was just sitting in a hotel and waiting, and had heard nothing from the British government. The Foreign Office has urged British citizens to keep a low profile and warned against travelling there. The Israeli offensive began after the militant group Hezbollah seized two Israeli soldiers. More than 70 Lebanese have been killed in the past four days. Ms Vainola said she could hear the sound of missiles and aircraft flying ove…

  20. Total Propaganda: Hizbullah wants soldiers moved to Iran JERUSALEM POST | July 13, 2006 By Yaakov Katz COMMENT: In the midst of the chaos churning in the Middle East Israel is releasing another wave of blatant propaganda with this Jerusalem Post article. Right on the heels of the recent false reports that Iran's government was going to impliment a nasi-esque plan to pin yellow Stars of David on the Jews in that country comes this story that the Hizbullah fighters are planning to transport two Israeli captured soldiers to Iran. This is such blantant provocation that would never ever be allowed to occur. Iran would never allow Hizbullah to harbor their POW's the…

http://www.timesonline.co.uk Anybody out There? by Marian Keyes (M Joseph £16.99) is the story of a thirtysomething Dublin woman who heads off to New York where she lands a “dream job” with Candy Grrrl cosmetics. She then meets Boston boy (her dream man) and they cavort around the Big Apple being witty. But this New York reverie soon turns nightmarish with a car crash involving some severe injuries to body and soul. Keyes is the justifiable queen of chick lit, a genuine storyteller with a knack for structure and timing, even if she does make heavy use of e-mail in place of character development. She also has a sharp eye for the grimly cheerful emotional landscape of th…

Millions of young people are risking hearing damage because they are listening to iPods and other music players too loudly, experts warned today. A survey by the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) found that more than half of 16 to 30 year-olds use MP3 players for more than an hour a day. And the devices are capable of playing music more loudly than ever before, increasing the risk of permanent hearing damage from listening to music. Many young people also admitted removing volume limits from their players by using unofficial software which is available on the Internet. Dr John Low, the chief executive of the RNID, said: "If young people don’t…

Match-fixing verdict to come soon The fate of the four clubs embroiled in Italy's match-fixing scandal will be revealed on Friday after 1800 BST. Juventus, Lazio, AC Milan and Fiorentina have been accused of influencing referee appointments. All could be relegated from Serie A while Juve may also be stripped of their last two league titles. It is thought the Italian Federal Appeals Commission president, Cesare Ruperto, will announce the verdicts after the stock exchange closes. Once the verdict is announced, the clubs will have three days to appeal to the Federal Court. The FIGC (Italian football's governing body) must hand Uefa the lists of teams which …
