A judge has temporarily overturned a decision by Miami's school board to ban a controversial children's book about Cuba from school libraries. He said the book must stay on the shelves until a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida (ACLU) against the school board is settled. Last month, the board voted to remove the book after complaints it was too positive about life under Fidel Castro. ACLU says the school board violated the US constitution with its ban. The Miami-Dade school authorities had removed all 24 books in the series, dealing with children living around the world. 'Errors of omission' The Miami-Dade Student Government Ass…

Two women killed when a giant, inflatable sculpture blew into the air fell to their deaths from a great height, according to ambulance staff. Another 13 people were hurt when the Dreamspace artwork was lifted into the air at Riverside Park, Chester-le-Street, Co Durham on Sunday. Forensic teams examining the artwork's moorings have not ruled out foul play. Claire Furmedge, 38, from Chester-le-Street, and 68-year-old Elizabeth Collings from Seaham, died. Ms Furmedge was a mother-of-two and Ms Collings was a grandmother. Both were on the artwork with young relatives, none of whom were seriously hurt. Star Trek actor James Doohan, who played the engineer Scotty in the original TV series, will now have his remains blasted into space in October. The actor's ashes were supposed to be sent into orbit last year, but the flight was delayed as tests were carried out on the rocket. Doohan died of Alzheimer's disease and pneumonia in July 2005, aged 85. His family will hold a service on the day of the rocket's launch for fans to pay tribute to him. The actor's ashes will be sent into space along with the remains of around 100 other people, including astronaut Gordon Cooper, who first went to space in 1963. After a short flight, the rocket will return to Earth,…

Bush, Iraqi PM agree to beef up Baghdad troops U.S., Iraqi forces to be shifted to strengthen capital Tuesday, July 25, 2006; Posted: 12:55 p.m. EDT (16:55 GMT) WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said Tuesday that a U.S. military program to bolster Iraqi security forces in Baghdad will better address the violence there as he pledged to stand by Iraq's new democratic government. "Obviously the violence in Baghdad is still terrible," Bush said during a joint White House news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. Bush had praised al-Maliki's signature program to improve Baghdad security during their last meeting in Baghdad in June. Bush compliment…

  5. Rice floats peace plan, sources say Israeli missiles, Hezbollah rockets crisscross Lebanese border BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is proposing an ambitious plan with up to two international military forces that would help the Lebanese government stabilize the situation in southern Lebanon, Lebanese political sources said. 7. Some of you may disagree, but did you know: It clearly states in the Quran that when a believer comes across a non-believer in the land of Islam, the non-believer has three options: 1. To Convert 2. Be heavily taxed 3. Be Killed Wow those are gracious options from a seemingly very tolerant religion. I LOVE those options. Now, let's compare that to what Christianity teaches about non-believers. - The Bible says to love thy enemies. - Christians seek to win converts by a loving presentation of the message of Christ's offer of pardon for sin that He purchased by dying in our place. A few points: - Israelis do not sneak into Palestinian terri…

  8. As this week's heatwave shows, climate change will affect almost every aspect of British life. But how? We examine the likely outcomes in coming decades This week's heatwave is only the beginning. The mercury may not have pipped the all-time record on Wednesday, but it is only a matter of time. Maybe not next week and maybe not next month, but soon. And for the rest of our lives. The planet is warming rapidly. Arctic ice is at record lows and the north pole could melt to open water sometime this century for the first time in some 40m years. The mighty West Antarctic ice sheet is creaking and dramatic changes are expected, from the Amazon rainforest to the Siberian per…

This was a really good show, very addictive. David Lynch is one of my favorite directors, and so, walking around in a movie store, found myself buying the first season on DVD. After the first two episodes I was hooked. It's a very entertaining and challengingly complex look at small-town American life, and the subtle, but omni-present eeriness that is just lurking in the corner of your eye. It draws on all of the themes Lynch brought up in his movie career, and I really think it works well in the TV show format. No wonder it got audiences hooked back in 1990, and even today with me. It's a timeless, and somewhat challenging show (with David Lynch, what isn't?). It's a…

Bush issues first veto, nixes stem cell bill Says measure ‘crosses a moral boundary’ society needs to respect The Associated Press Updated: 2:55 p.m. ET July 19, 2006 WASHINGTON - President Bush cast the first veto of his 5-1/2-year presidency Wednesday, rejecting legislation to ease limits on federal funding for research on stem cells obtained from embryos. "This bill would support the taking of innocent human life of the hope of finding medical benefits for others. It crosses a moral boundary that our society needs to respect, so I vetoed it," Bush said at a White House event where he was surrounded by 18 families who "adopted" frozen embryos that were not u…

A microchip which can store information like a hard drive has been unveiled by US company Freescale. The chip, called magnetoresistive random-access memory (Mram), maintains data by relying on magnetic properties rather than an electrical charge. One analyst told the Associated Press news agency that the chip was the most significant development in computer memory for a decade. Mram chips could find their way into many different electronic devices. The benefit of Mram chips is that they will hold information after power has been switched off. Freescale has been producing the four-megabit Mram chips at an Arizona factory for two months to build up levels of stock. …

Wes Anderson in my opinion is the best director around. He hasn't done many movies but the ones he has done are brilliant - Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic. All quirky and fun with great soundtracks. Has anyone here seen any of them and if so what is your favourite? I love The Royal Tenenbaums but they are all great.

This is ABCs answer to Rockstar, American Idol, and Big Brother all in one.... I happen to stumble upon this show tonight (the premier) and let me just say.... everyone on this show sucks ass.. ok maybe not completely.. but the mics on the show were all off tune! Too low.. some were too high.... the band over powered almost every vocalist!! Its just cheezy. The Judges are Andre Harrell, Kara DioGuardi, Mark Hudson (I think his name is Mark) anyhoo.... its such a rip off of Rockstar that its laughable.... I think this show is gonna tank.. but then again, Bush did manage to get re-elected so, anything can happen.
