Police in Los Angeles are beginning an investigation into an incident in which filmmaker Mel Gibson is alleged to have made anti-Semitic comments. Mr Gibson, 50, was alleged to have made the comments after being arrested for drink-driving in Malibu, California. He later apologised for his outburst, admitting saying things "that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable", but did not give details. His apology was "unremorseful and insufficient", campaigners have said. On the Anti-Defamation League's website, national director Abraham Foxman said the statement released by Mr Gibson did not constitute "a proper apology". The New South Wales Board…

Brit killed and barbecued after split from Thai bride Toby Charnaud and former bar girl Pannada Laoruang. A former public schoolboy was barbecued by his Thai wife after divorcing her when she ran up massive gambling debts, a court heard. Toby Charnaud, 41, was clubbed to death with an iron bar and wooden staves by relatives of his ex-wife, Pannada Laoruang. She then helped them burn his body on a charcoal fire, before chopping it up and scattering the charred remains around Kaeng Krajan National Park on the Thai-Burma border. A Thai court heard how Mr Charnaud, who was educated at Marlborough College, sold £2.5million Latimer Manor estate near C…

http://www.weeklystandard.com/Check.asp?idArticle=12519&r=gzqaa T HAS BEEN REPEATED so often that it is now a mantra: "Embryonic stem cells offer the most promise for finding cures" for degenerative diseases and conditions such as Parkinson's disease and spinal cord injury. But saying something ten thousand times doesn't make it true. Indeed, the embryonic stem cell mantra has yet to be demonstrated scientifically. More than that, the actual data published to date in peer-reviewed science journals tell a far different story. While there have certainly been successes in embryonic stem cell experiments in animal studies--many of them hyped to the hilt in mainstr…

Wayne Rooney’s bitter feud with Cristiano Ronaldo could re-ignite today. Portuguese winker Ronaldo will come face to face with Rooney for the first time since their World Cup bust-up at Manchester United’s training ground. England star Rooney was shown the red card for kicking out at Ricardo Carvalho after Ronaldo had demanded his club-mate should be sent off in their quarter-final battle in Gelsenkirchen. And Sharpe is convinced the United winger can forget about being welcomed back with open arms. Former Old Trafford ace Sharpe, 35, rapped: “Ronaldo came out and said there’s no problem between him and Wayne. “Apparently they sent texts and kissed and made u…

Harper Lee, the reclusive US author of To Kill a Mockingbird, has written a rare published piece - a letter to a magazine about reading as a child. She tells O, The Oprah Magazine, that in her Depression-era Alabama village "youngsters had little to do but read". The 80-year-old adds that in today's society "where people have laptops, cell phones, iPods and minds like empty rooms, I still plod along with books". To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee's only novel, won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize. Lee tells a special summer reading issue of Oprah Winfrey's magazine that she must have learned to read "from having been read to by my family". "My sisters and brother, much o…

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said Israel is not ready to stop its offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon. "The fighting continues. There is no ceasefire and there will not be any ceasefire in the coming days," he said. Mr Olmert apologised "for the pain caused" to Lebanese civilians, but said Hezbollah had suffered a severe blow. Israel and Hezbollah meanwhile continued to trade fire, less than a day after Israel declared a partial halt to air strikes on south Lebanon. Israeli warplanes struck several targets, killing a Lebanese soldier near the city of Tyre. Israel expressed regret over the death, saying it believed the vehicle was carrying a seni…

Who else has been COMPLETELY addicted to Project Runway? I've watched it since the end of the first season. I think Season 2 is by FAR the best though, I absolutely love those guys who were in the competition (Santino! Nick! Andrae! DANIEL :wink3: ). This season is really great so far, though. How about Vincent? He's absolutely INSANE. :stunned: Him and his fuckin' hats, I swear... I love it though. My favorites are Bradley (he's so cute!), Alison (she's sooo cute too), Uli (she's got this in the bag so far), Keith (I love that bastard!) and Michael (how against stereotypes is he? Really cool!). So, anyone else watching? Who do you think is going to ge…

All the critics here were bashing the movie, and as i read the book, i wasnt expecting it to be very good, coz the book is always way better than the movie. And after reading so many bad reviews, i went just to check it out, more out of curiosity, but wasnt expecting much!! But i did have a nice surprise: The movie is actually good!! I dont know if it was because i was expecting it not to be, but i really liked it. Yes its long, yes its detailed and yes, sometimes its kinda slow, but for me, who read the book, and even knew how it was gonna end it was pr…

  17. Fox News Says Hezbollah 'Certain' To Nuke Major City Channel is terror group's biggest cheerleader as Americans hit with the sum of all fearmongering Paul Joseph Watson | July 27 2006 Following the ceaseless bombing of Lebanon, Fox News has gone thermonuclear in its mission to drive fear into the hearts of Americans by insisting that Hezbollah's use of a nuclear device in a major US or Israeli city is inevitable and that only increased surveillance of Americans can stop it. Couched in a bizarre Hannity and Colmes demonstration, where a Geiger counter (soon to be a common household object apparently) was used to measure radiation of packets placed in the two pres…

A penniless pensioner from west London paid for a life-saving heart operation with a fake cheque. Retired painter and decorator Roy Thayers was facing a nine-month wait on the NHS to get an angioplasty. Instead, the 77-year-old wrote out a cheque for almost £9,000 for a private operation at Hammersmith Hospital - despite only having £10 in the bank. He is now paying back the remaining amount of £6,481 in £25 instalments. He will be 99 by the time it is repaid. Severe pain The pensioner suffered from terrible pain for more years "than I can remember." It left him a virtual cripple. "It was like putting a knife inside my ribs and twisting it all up," h…

The southern Lebanese town of Qana is believed by some to be where Jesus performed his first miracle, at the wedding in Cana of Galilee mentioned in the Gospel of St John. But in modern times it is blood - not water and wine - that is indelibly linked with the town, the blood of Lebanese civilians killed in Israeli bombing. In 1996, one of the deadliest single events of the whole Arab-Israeli conflict took place there - the shelling of a UN base where hundreds of local people were sheltering. More than 100 were killed and another 100 injured, cut down by Israeli anti-personnel shells that explode in the air sending a lethal shower of shrapnel to the ground. …

The large James Bond stage at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire has been destroyed by fire. At least eight fire engines tackled the blaze at the set, where filming for the new movie Casino Royale had finished. Eyewitness Jen McVean, who owns a firm at the studios in Iver Heath, said the stage had been "completely on fire". The stage had been transformed into a replica Venice where the film, with a reported budget of £39m ($72m), is partly based. The roof covering the stage caved in through fire damage and firefighters used special equipment to reach it. Still alight Brian Dugdale, the firefighter in charge of controlling the blaze, said: "Luckily t…

British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett has protested to the US about its use of Prestwick Airport in western Scotland to transport bombs to Israel. Amid the Lebanon crisis, she said it seemed the US was ignoring procedure, and she registered her concerns with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. SNP leader Alex Salmond claimed the UK government must decide whether to "be an aircraft carrier" for the US. The Lib Dems suggested the Americans were taking the UK for granted. Mrs Beckett was asked about the controversy after discussing the Middle East crisis with fellow foreign ministers in Rome. "We have already let the United States know that this is…
