  2. When Oliver Stone announced he was to make a film about the 11 September terror attacks, conservatives were horrified - David Usborne looks at how they’ve now become his biggest fans. When word leaked from Hollywood a little over a year ago that Paramount Pictures was making a feature film about the terror attacks of 11 September 2001, many thought the studio was extremely brave. The movie, which opens in two weeks, would coincide closely with the fifth anniversary of the tragedy. First there was the obvious concern about timing and sensitivity. Would audiences, in the US especially, be ready for a celluloid rehash of events so recent and painful? In the end it was …

  6. The Pentagon is keeping a close eye on what its troops post online, with special attention being paid to videos that show the aftermath of combat. There is no specific policy that bans troops from posting graphic material. But troops who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan are hearing the message that they should consider carefully what videos they upload to the web. Sites such as YouTube and Ogrish.com have hundreds or thousands of clips from soldiers, some set to rock music. At their most graphic, they show the aftermath of suicide bombings and gunfights between coalition forces and insurgents. Many include troops using foul language. One soldier who served …

  11. Hi-tech thieves are using iPods to download data, writes Andrew Don Ever thought your personal banking details could be stored alongside a Coldplay album on someone else's iPod? Probably not. But the shrinking size of computer storage devices with ever-greater capacity has made customer data from company systems easy pickings. Blackberries, mobile phones with in-built storage and data pens and memory sticks that fit onto a key ring can be surreptitiously plugged into a computer port and used to steal bank account details, insurance information or even medical records. An iPod could be easily configured to behave like a regular hard disc, which, like other devices, …

Increasing numbers of Americans are becoming too fat to fit into X-ray machines, US researchers report. The nation's rising obesity problems mean many citizens are not only too large for scanners but they have too much fat for the rays to penetrate. Over the past 15 years, the number of failed scans linked to patient obesity has doubled, Radiology journal reports. The problem is not confined to scanners. UK hospitals have had to make their beds stronger for obese patients. And airlines are designing aircraft to carry heavier loads because passengers are becoming plumper. Dr Raul Uppot and colleagues, who work in radiology at Massachusetts General Hospita…

The Reds have been drawn against Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League third qualifying round, with the second leg in Haifa on 22 or 23 August. "It's a crazy situation and totally unacceptable to think about us going over there," he told the club website. "There is no way we should be going to Israel to play at this time." Benitez added: "The situation is very clear in my mind. I feel sad for the people over there at the moment because it's a terrible time for them. "But we have to put the security and saf…

You can watch it and leave me some critiques on it. It's very dry humor... we were inspired by the Office. Honestly, I don't know what to make of it. It only took us like 6 hours to make or something like that. Sometimes it makes me laugh, sometimes it only gets a chuckle or two. IT HAS NO PLOT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Doctors have warned teenagers about the dangers of sniffing mothballs after two teenagers fell ill through the habit. An 18-year-old French girl had to be hospitalised when she developed scaly skin on her legs and hands, unsteadiness and mental sluggishness. Medics were initially puzzled, especially as her twin sister displayed similar, but milder, symptoms. But the New England Journal of Medicine reports that days later, it was found the mothballs were to blame. It was discovered that the girls had been using the mothballs as a recreational drug when doctors found a bag of mothballs stashed in her room while she was being treated at the Hospital of Timone i…

The announcement follows the release of a music industry report that says more than 20 billion music tracks have been downloaded illegally in the last year. "We have won another battle in an ongoing war," said John Kennedy, chairman and CEO of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industri…
