KINGS OF LEON, JAY-Z and THE VERVE will headline this year’s Glastonbury festival. The brothers FOLLOWILL will top the bill on the opening Friday night (June 27), hip hop heavyweight Jay follows a day later (June 28), while Wigan’s finest rock beasts will close the bash on the Sunday (June 29). Co-organiser EMILY EAVIS said: “We are over the moon about these acts playing, all of which bring something completely different Glastonbury. “Kings of Leon have played several times, from starting in the new bands tent a few years back. They are one of the most exciting live bands around, and this feels like their moment to finally headline the pyramid. “We see the…

Did you get your Glastonbury ticket yesterday? Or are you giving it a miss this year? More and more Brits say they are ditching UK festivals and heading to Europe. Many fans have told Newsbeat they are fed up with the rain, and reckon events across the channel work out better value. Suzy Cook, 28, is a receptionist in Bedford. She has already booked tickets for the Pinkpop festival in the Netherlands in May. There is a poster she has printed off the internet sellotaped above her desk, and she has scribbled the details in her diary using an enormous pink highlighter. Rage Against the Machine, Editors, Foo Fighters, KT Tunstall and Groove Armada are among th…

As the technicians set about transforming two of the nation's greenest spaces for four days of Pop, Indie and Dance legends (as well as the ubiquitous handful of Nu Rave acts), Sound Generator looks ahead for a selection of old and new favourites playing at London's Hyde Park and Leeds' Harewood House this coming weekend. Thursday, London/Friday, Leeds Satellite Party - Perry Farrell's new outfit take to the Main Stage on Thursday afternoon after two years of low-key preparation. COULD Manchester be on the verge of staging its own annual Glastonbury- style pop festival? Big hitters in the Manchester music scene are already in secret talks to establish the inaugural music festival next summer and are confident that the event could become a regular feature on the calendar to rival the Carling Festival in Reading and Leeds, the V Festival in Stafford and Chelmsford, and T In The Park in Scotland. Although discussions are still at a very early stage, my spies tell me that a think-tank of locally-based music industry movers and shakers are formulating plans for an open-air event and are looking at a range of sites, including Heaton Park, as the p…

Here comes the sun: Thousands pitch up early at Glastonbury as forecasters predict a dry festival... well, mostly By Dan Newling Last updated at 10:26 PM on 25th June 2008 Comments (0) Add to My Stories In a year when Glastonbury has been criticised for abandoning its musical roots, it will console the purists that at least one thing has stayed the same: the festivalgoers' penchant for excess. As thousands of revellers descended on the field site in Somerset yesterday, many had come laden with amounts of alcohol that were prodigious even by rock star standards. Enlarge Some of the first festival revellers smile as they arrive at the Glas…

YOU may have heard of only a handful, but there are in fact more than 450 music festivals taking place in the UK this year. That means you can choose from roughly 30 events every weekend during the summer season, which kicked off last week with the Isle Of Wight and Download festivals, and ends, also on the Isle of Wight, with Bestival which takes place September 5-7. Festivals are now big business, with more people attending than ever before. Live music in general is currently a booming industry, and in the face of record labels collapsing and uncertainty surrounding the future and format of recorded music, performing live provides a sure-fire way of bands to make …

Next weekend sees the biggest music event of the year for the UK, as an estimated 170,000 people descend on the muddy fields of Glastonbury for its annual Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts. This year the festival - held on Worthy farm in Somerset, south west England - caused controversy after the three headline acts were revealed as indie legends The Verve, rock 'n' rollers Kings of Leon and rap mogul Jay-Z. Upon hearing that Jay-Z was to take one of the prestigious slots, outraged Oasis guitarist and rock 'n' roll traditionalist Noel Gallagher - who headlined the festival in 2004 - stormed against his inclusion on the bill. Noel ranted: "If it ain't broke…

Michael Eavis hints at artists for 2008 festival Michael Eavis has been speaking about this year's - and has even hinted at who might be making an appearance. Although refusing to reveal any names from the line-up, when pushed by BBC Points West programme he hinted, "I'm putting on a black American headliner, who’s absolutely terrific." He added that the artist will specifically appeal to the younger audience, whom many claimed were missing from last year's event. Kanye West is one of the favourites to filll this gap, although Jay-Z, Beyonce and Alicia Keys are possibilities as they may all be touring during 2008. Also asked about the probability that A…

Isn't "Virgin" supposed to mean something that hasn't been done before? If you're like many music fans in Calgary today, you're probably feeling disappointed -- and maybe a little cheated -- to see the been-there, done-that lineup of Calgary's first Virgin Festival. The Tragically Hip and Stone Temple Pilots: Two huge bands in the days of cassette tapes, grunge and Seinfeld, and now the headlining acts at Virgin Festival Calgary. To quote the razor wit of one Facebook wag: "Stone Temple Pilots and The Tragically Hip ... wow, it's gonna be the hottest festival of 1998." If you're the type whose musical tastebuds tingle to Tom Jones or The Wiggles -- both wi…

Michael Eavis has confirmed that the mystery “black American” headliner of Glastonbury will be Jay-Z. Speaking to BBC Somerset Eavis revealed that he had booked the Rap star in an attempt to break with Glastonbury tradition. He said: "He will appeal to the young people and under-25s for sure, so that's a big pull for them. "It's not like the traditional one we do, like Radiohead, Coldplay and Muse and Oasis." Jay-Z joins Neil Diamond on the bill for the festival which takes place over the weekend of June 27-29. Registration for Glastonbury tickets opened today (February 1) and fans have until March 15 to lodge their interest before tickets go on sale o…

Introduction by John Walsh Saturday, 26 April 2008 Whatever did British people do in summer before there were music festivals? Did we spend our weekends planting sweet peas in the garden? Or flooring pints in the pub? Of course we knew festivals existed somewhere. We knew the Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts was going on; it had been luring revellers into its muddily spaced-out embrace since the early Seventies. Gradually it was joined by Reading, then Leeds, then the Monsters of Rock Festival at Donington Park if you fancied banging your head with other heavy metal zealots to the subtle riffs of AC/DC and the mighty Maiden. But that, by and…

AS THE clocks changed a couple of weeks ago and spring is upon us, I watched with interest this week to see one of the UK's leading music festivals, Glastonbury, sell more than 100,000 tickets within 24 hours. Cast your mind back to the last couple of Glastonburys when the headlines were all about the mud and the rain. It is still staggering that music festivals of this scale are attracting such huge audiences. Recent years have seen huge growth in the outdoor festival market, but organisers have warned this year that so many big events are happening that some are likely to flop as consumers tighten their belts. As organisers compete for the big names to draw the…
