Registration to obtain tickets for this year's event, which takes place at Pilton Farm in Somerset from 27-29 June, opens on Friday. The band, fronted by Sting, will perform at the Isle of Wight Festival, following on from the Rolling Stones who topped the bill at this year's event. Isle of Wight Festival promoter John Giddings said: "It's a coup to get The Police for the festival. We're very happy to have the biggest tour of the last two years stopping by the Isle of Wight." The Police, famous for hits Roxanne and Every Breath You Take, are currently touring Central and…

The man's death is not being treated as suspicious, police said A 26-year-old man has died in Yeovil District Hospital after a suspected drugs overdose at the Glastonbury Festival at Worthy Farm in Somerset. The man, believed to be from the West Midlands, was found unconscious by festival staff in the Park Farm area of the site early on Saturday. A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said that a full post-mortem examination would now be carried out. His death is not being treated as suspicious, he added. 'Tent thefts' Police said crime at the festival at this stage was "slightly down" on 2005 but the number of arrests were "well up". The spok…

Glastonbury looks to ditch 'middle-aged, respectable' clientele Last updated at 13:00pm on 12th July 2007 Comments The organiser of Glastonbury Festival wants to attract younger people to next year's event after claiming it had become "too middle-aged" and "respectable". Michael Eavis said the decision to sell tickets online for this year's event had attracted an older clientele, at the expense of teenagers. Around 40 per cent of tickets will be sold via phone lines next year to help get youths back to the legendary three-day event in Somerset. Scroll down for more... Plenty of exuberance on display from Glastonbury crowds this year, but for organi…

A new music festival catering for up to 90,000 people over three days is being planned for Swansea's Singleton Park. Promoters say established international and Welsh artists will play indie, rock and dance music on multiple stages at the event next July. They say the aim is to develop Fflam - Welsh for flame - into Wales' answer to Scotland's T in the Park. The event has been welcomed by Swansea Council which said it would put the city on the "music festival map". The festival, which will run from 13 - 15 July, is being promoted by Straight Music Ltd, which has worked on UK tours for the likes of Eminem and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Director John Curd said: "Our aim…

Music festival off as floods hit An indie music festival in Oxfordshire has been postponed after heavy rain left much of the site under several feet of water. The Truck Festival was due to have hosted acts such as Idlewild, Jack Penate and Lethal Bizzle this weekend. But a statement said the camping, parking and audience areas were "underwater and dangerous". Meanwhile, organisers of the Glade dance festival in Berkshire have said their event will go ahead. Gates were closed after severe weather on Friday, but were later re-opened. Truck, which is often described as a smaller Glastonbury because of its friendly atmosphere, was expecting 5,000 fans. Tick…

A day of concerts across the globe intended to exceed Live Aid in scale and ambition is to be held this summer to highlight the issue of climate change. Organisers of the event, scheduled to take place on 7 July, hope to amass a worldwide television audience of two billion people in order to present the message about global warming. The series of co-ordinated concerts in seven cities - London, Washington DC, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and Kyoto - is expected to be announced today by the former American vice-president Al Gore, who is now a figurehead of the campaign against climate change. Promoters of the event, which will be branded "SOS", yesterday pro…

Iggy Pop closed The Other Stage on Saturday night with a typically manic performance. He jumped into the crowd during his set and had to be removed by security. The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers wore a lurex suit for his set. The American band rounded off Saturday night's line-up on the Pyramid Stage. Earlier, Birmingham quartet Editors appeared on the Other Stage with their more soberly dressed frontman Tom Smith. As the party went on around them, organisers did their best to clear the mud. But like this young music fan, most festival goers were dirty but not defeated by the conditions. Scottish singer Paolo Nutini performed a soulful set on …

Many revellers face a long journey back home Thousands of people were delayed leaving the Glastonbury Festival on Monday because of bad weather. Cars and camper vans got stuck in the mud as the rain continued to fall, and tractors were drafted in to tow vehicles out of the car parks. Police handed out 3,000 space blankets to those trying to get home, and the Red Cross were treating queues at the railway station at Castle Cary. It was also reported that some buses had failed to turn up. One concerned mother said: "My son was on a combined ticket with coach and has spent nearly seven hours waiting in the cold and rain without shelter for a coach back to Co…

Everything is sucked out using a hose and a vacuum tank GLASTO TOILET TRIVIA 3,220 toilets in total 540 more than 2005 70 toilet sites 700 metres of urinals 64 female "she-pee" urinals 35 disabled toilets 22 toilet-emptying tractor crews The basic, often-overflowing Glastonbury toilets are the stuff of legend, like the music and the mud. And the crews who empty and clean them have the least desirable jobs at the festival. So what is life like on the front line with the toilet teams? Our candid feature leaves no stone unturned. At a block of portable toilets, a man in a white waterproof suit charges into one of the makeshift loos with a large gree…

And its not U2 or Muse Michael Eavis confirmed to NME this morning that following the huge success of this years Glastonbury, plans are in motion for another in 2008 and a band has already been booked to headline. Eavis won't comment on who it is but has already confirmed that it will NOT be U2 or Muse, saying 'we don't need U2'. Interestingly Thom Yorke has been spotted at the Glasto festival over the weekend, so Radiohead are a strong possibility along with Coldplay who last headlined back in 2005. Other rumours (mostly made up by myself) include The Rolling Stones, Oasis, David Bowie, Sir Paul McCartney and R.E.M

Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis has praised festival-goers' spirit after heavy rain blighted the three-day event. Mr Eavis, who began the festival on his Somerset farm in 1970, said the weekend had "gone very, very well, in spite of the rain and mud". But conditions have improved, with the sun shining for Dame Shirley Bassey's set on the main Pyramid stage. The Who and Kaiser Chiefs are also on the bill for the festival's final day. "It's a pity about the rain, but it seems to be a regular feature of the English summer, so the festival compensates for it," Mr Eavis told reporters. "Someone phoned me from Spain and said they would swap all the …

The forecast for the music festival is rain, more rain and thunderstorms. As the gates open at the Somerset site on Wednesday, fans can expect light showers, followed by heavy showers the next day. Mr Eavis and his land had a year off in 2006 to recover The gates have opened for this year's Glastonbury Festival, and founder Michael Eavis spoke ahead of the event about its expansion, line-up and future. "Go on, fire away." Mr Eavis, speaking from his Somerset farm where he founded the festival 37 years ago, is in a hurry. "I haven't got much time, okay? Just start talking." Glastonbury has become a British summer institution, its legend stretching far beyond the music scene, and is returning after a year off. And there are just days to go. We start talking, quickly, about whether there is a danger that the festival could become too big. The even…

A handful of tickets went missing during postal delivery Music fans whose Glastonbury tickets went missing in the post have been assured they will be able to attend this weekend's festival. Organiser Michael Eavis told BBC Radio One that the 70-80 people affected have been contacted, and will receive duplicate passes at the gates. Royal Mail says it is carrying out an "urgent investigation" into how the £145 passes were misplaced. The festival has now opened its doors, with the first act playing on Thursday. Largest ever London-based singer-songwriter Beans On Toast opens proceedings on the Left Field stage, which promotes political activism. Act…

What makes a perfect festival anthem? A great, soul-stirring melody? A simple lyric that everyone can sing along with? Or is it simply a question of timing – that glorious, unplannable collision of time and place, when a band catches a wave of mainstream exposure, and find themselves playing for a 50,000-strong crowd on the very day their album rockets to Number One? Whatever it is, some tracks never fail to spark utter mayhem when unleashed at festivals. Here’s our Top 5… Hey Jude There’s no excuse for not knowing the words to that epic outro… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv1wf27GE0c The Scientist Coldplay’s majestic, wide-screen tearjerker was custom-mad…
