U2

Featured Replies

When you say, "U2 have had only 3 or 4 descent songs in the last 16 years.." how could I possibly be mis-interpreting you? That seems to suggest something! :P (I just had to quote you out of context - it makes for better journalism!)

So, you're then suggesting that the early stuff is par-excellence, and they need to do that?? Well, I hope so too. Maybe this time, we'll get to hear Larry and Adam sing.;)

I didn't say they only had 3 or 4 descent songs. That was deaths_friends. You're not quoting me at all.

I think some people are misinterpreting my statement.

1. U2 is probably my favorite band of all time.

2. They have had some brilliant moments post-Achtung Baby. It doesn't get any better than Beautiful Day or City of Blinding Lights.

3. Because I still see flashes of brilliance, I hope they are able to put it all together and come out with album that is on par with some of their early stuff.

4. We know that U2 are capable of reinventing themselves and still being great. Look at the difference in style between, arguably, their two best albums: Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby.

5. I always expect U2 to be great. I can't stand bands that "mail it in."

this is a timeless quote about U2 which i can absolutely relate to.

You are suffering from an overdose of U2! Perhaps the antidote is to listen to another band, and then come back to U2 when you haven't heard them for a while! (And pardon my misquote on post off there!)

rumors are swirling that the new single will probably be announced on dave fanning's radio show sometime next week.. hope this is true...

Any news of the next tour yet?

no.. I imagine we won't hear about this for a good month or so. If possible they hopefully will start the tour late spring/early summer. They typically start here in the US but they may change it up.

I hope it is this Summer in the U.S. so that I am out of school. I wouldn't mind traveling to a few cities to see this tour.

I've heard that the next tour is already booked.

That came from somebody I heard on the street at a show. BUT he is the webmaster of u2wanderer.org...so I'm sure he has some good connections.

yeah, I would think for the most part its booked but all the fine tuning, production, ticketing (presales etc), marketing, promotion is still in the works.

Hopefully we don't have Tuesday Bloody Tuesday like before the Vertigo tour.

NEW @U2 U2 PLANNING AN OUTDOOR TOUR

January 08, 2009

posted by: m2 @U2 Forum member "Falling at Your Feet" has posted a bit from the February issue of Q magazine, in which Bono reveals that U2 is planning an outdoor tour this year:

"What are the plans for the tour? How do you plan on topping Vertigo?

Bono: "Well, I can't say too much because [promoters] the Live Nation people would die. But I think it's fair to say that what we've planned for outdoors has never been done before and that we've been working on it for a long time. It's a feat of engineering genius."

spacer.gifNEW @U2 NEW SINGLE COMING SOON

January 07, 2009

posted by: m2 We're hearing lots of buzz about the first single from U2's new album, which is expected to be "Get On Your Boots." Confirming anything has been a challenge today, but here's what we think we know:

  • A fan in Boston tell us that WBCN radio announced on-air yesterday that the new U2 single will "hit the airwaves" next week. WBCN is, of course, a longtime U2-friendly radio station.
  • But, a good source elsewhere is saying the single won't be on US radio until January 19.

We do know that U.S. radio stations typically receive new singles on Thursdays or Fridays for airing the following week. So, it sounds like the new single should be out in the next week or two at most. We've got feelers out in a bunch of places, and we'll update this as we hear more.

On a semi-related note, U2tour.de is reporting that the UK standard version of No Line On The Horizon will include a bonus track. The U.K. and Japan typically get these bonus tracks. U2tour.de also expects the bonus track will be available on some of the limited editions of the album, too.

Jacks Whites guitar is soo funky. And Jimmy Page is a Legend. It should be good then!!

we shall see very soon.

I am so excited for the new U2 album, and I am equally excited for the tour.

yep, looks like the new single will be released to radio on jan 19th. A canadian radio dj, alan cross has hear a clip of this new single, Get on your Boots and posted comments on his twitter page.. http://twitter.com/alancross

i am pretty excited by his comments.. :D

Another fan who lives in london ran into Brian Eno today at a Israel/Gaza Protest and here's what Brian told him about the album:

So I was out on the protest march from Hyde Park to the Israeli Embassy this afternoon, and as I look to my left who should be walking next to me but Brian himself! I said hello and remarked upon how great it was that so many people were out in protest despite the bitter cold..then I moved in for the kill!

"So...just how good is NLOTH then Brian?" And with a smile he said "Devastating! It's devastatingly brilliant!" I reacted with a happy grin and he went on to say "I can honestly say it's the best album they've ever done, and people will love it"

I didnt want to ask anything more as I didnt think the timing was in any way appropriate, so I just said "Excellent" and we went on to talk more for 10 minutes or so about the situation in Gaza as we walked on, then he said that he was going to move on through the crowds a little quicker so that he could get closer to the front. He said "Good talking to you and take care" and off he disappeared.

Yeah, I know that what he said about it being the best album they've ever done isn't the most original line, but it sounded good hearing it face to face from him!

this guy who works at a radio station got a chance to hear the new single Get on your boots.

here's his review:

I found myself in a situation very much like Alan Cross this morning, so I composed my thoughts for The Blue Crackheads after hearing the song twice.

God bless 'em, it opens with a drum fill, not unlike "Young Folks" by Peter, Bjorn & John, and then we're on our way. The signature riff is muscular and catchy in the "Vertigo" vein, with a rapid fire vocal pattern. I read a Alan Cross' blog this morning that compared the verses to "Pump It Up" by Elvis Costello, and I can't say I disagree with that. It's evocative but I wouldn't call it a rip-off. The chorus goes all middle eastern with Bono singing "You don't know how beautiful you are". There's a half-tempo breakdown/bridge with a processed drum loop that I cannot wait to hear in a stadium. It's like John Bonham playing on a Massive Attack song before the song lurches back into the main riff for another verse and chorus. And then before you know it, it's all over. It feels like a dense 7 minute epic crammed into about 3 and a half minutes.

The single most striking thing about this song for me are the drums. Or at least I think they're drums! I've never heard so many layers of rhythm on a U2 song. There are a lot of very processed drums (I thought of Kasabian at one point and N*E*R*D* at another) and loops going on, coming in and out of the mix and then at points it goes back to traditional sounding drums for emphasis. It's extremely tasteful, but complex enough to make my head spin. And I have no idea how I'm gonna manage to pull it off when my band learns it, so stay tuned for some comedy while I work that business out.

Anyway, this is NOT U2 by the numbers. This is not a "return to form" or "back to basics". This is, what the kids like to call, some OTHER shit. The 21st Century version of U2 is finally here. And they aren't looking back to their own catalog for inspiration anymore if this song is any indication.

Cool !!:)

We are all the best outcomes of what experiences we have as individuals, and as a collective; the best of what will be, and a build from past lessons, from the blue firmament of all times..

Have a magical time on the 18th, and say HI to Bono from me!!
