Coldplay rip off Kylie! (sort of..)

Featured Replies

Some media reported today that Coldplay might get sued for plagiarising a theme song from the soap opera "night and day" which is sung by Kylie Minogue. Supposedly the beginning of the theme song is very alike the piano riff from "Speed of Sound"

Well I found a sample online, and there certainly is a similarity. Listen for yourself over at http://closingwalls.net

hoom i do see the resemblence.....but i dont fink they should get sued for somefing as little as that! if anyfing, i fink they should blame Gwenyth for watching that soap opera and Chris getting the riff in his head!

Maybe similar chord progression but CERTAINLY NOT plagiarism. The kylie song sounds like shit anyways :smug:

ffs, and they played a song for Kylie when she had brest-cancer, they played the scientist for her! How unthankful :/

I'm sorry that she has cancer man, i didn't say anything about that. I commented on the song which is bad. Am I not permitted to bash a kylie song because she has cancer??

Well they sound pretty much alike indeed. Makes it nice and easy to mix the two songs to create a duet between Kylie Minogue and Chris Martin! Wouldn't that be wonderful? ;)

So far Kraftwerk and Kylie Minogue have contributed to X & Y. :snore:

for all you music theory enthusiasts you can see that this claim is rediculous because the only similarity is the rythm (which totally was coincidence). coldplays version starts out going from a major 2nd to a major 4rth and as the riff progresses the bottom note goes down full steps, kylie's starts major 2nd then tritone then goes down chromatically.

Oooooh boy its not the EXACT same note, who cares.

It sounds the same, and is obviously no coincidence tha Chris writes this piano part so soon after this Kylie opera.

yeah... my point being is that you cannot copyright a rythm as simple as that one.

I dont think anyone here is saying that she should be sueing (Or if they are well thats just a bit petty thinking)

Im just acknowledging the similarity.

oh yeah, no doubt... but im sure if you looked around a bit, you could find like 50 other songs with similar riffs

I dont know, it sounds fairly original to me.

ive written songs and then listened to a recording ive never listened to and had the rythm be almost exactly the same... its not that far out of a thing

at the Storytellers gig.. they said they ripped of Kate Bush for Speed of Sound.. not sure what song.. I dont really listen to too much Kate.. :embarrased:

Argh! And people think Speed of Sound sounds like Clocks

After hearing that clip...it does sound very similar to the Kylie's song.. Aren't they from the same record company though? :idea2:

Kraftwerk

:stunned:

I'd be surprised if the guys in Coldplay even know who Kraftwerk are. :smartass2:

This should be interesting if/when I buy/steal this new album.

Yep that's true. I have an interview where Chris says they steal bits and peaces from other songs:

Square One - Brian Eno

What If - John Lennon

White Shadows - The Cure and U2

Speed of Sound - Kate Bush

Fix You - Elbow

And so on. Definitely not Kylie. Could it be just coincidence?

Uh-uh, they bought a Kraftwerk riff that is used in 'Talk'. Officially yo.

On the blender magazine, it says Chris has been listening to Kraftwerk & Block Party :idea2:
