That is the question....

 

I was commenting to this lady at work about how I had gone to the Interpol gig and my friend recorded the gig. Since my other friend and I were next to her.. all of our silly drunken comments came out on the recording and such.. lol and well.. the show was great! The recording not so great.. but it brought back memories.. and thats ace! Anyhoo.. she (co-worker) tried giving me the 3rd degree because she said what my friend did was wrong.. it was 'stealing' from the artist. I dont see how it is stealing... she isnt going to sell the recordings... she isnt posting it on ebay.. she just recorded it for her sharing enjoyment. My co-worker claims that its illegal and wrong.. I say, if you record and sell it for profit.. then its wrong. If you share it.. it isnt.. :) what say you??

I have it on good authority he was told not to 'bother' anymore.. :sneaky: I think he was given a board intervention... and now is spamming the official... he's not very successful.. everyone there is ignoring his stupid posts lol

nahh man you should share bootlegs! and like you said if you record it make a profit and sell it then thats wrong if the band or whoever finds out but if you record it fo your own good to enjoy and laff and just be like "yea i was there!" then keep it and/or share it wiff others who also enjoy that band

It's not really up for debate whether or not it's illegal (it is), but, like a lot of other things that are illegal, that doesn't necessarily mean it's "wrong," just like there are lots of things that ARE legal that we would consider wrong or immoral (like adultery, for instance).

 

Anyway, all that crap aside, I would go ahead and share them. Because in my opinion, it's one of those things that's illegal that shouldn't be. Or the law should at least be revised.

It's more than alright to share Camille. Sharing music is good karma for sure :) As long as no profit is made, no harm done. I still trade bootlegs of jambands all the time and it is totally fine.

I say share.... Although it's illegal, it's real uncharitable of the artists' labels (or even the artists themselves) to come after people who share bootlegs of concerts... I mean after all, it's not like they can release / sell all of them or that all of them are of that quality. They should treat it as free publicity and encourage it. Heck, maybe even the fans should get paid :P

 

And music's a cultural thing... It belongs to the community

I support bootlesgs of gigs for one reason, if I could by them of the airtist directly I would there is a untapped market out there !

I think there's no problem in sharing :P Selling would be wrong. Bootlegs allow us to be in touch with the band in particular way. How would I hear a presentation in Germany for example if there's no official record available of it? It's my point of view :)
