Far away from the sofa

Abusing soundchecks, denying rumors about seperating, making the fans happy: business as usual for Coldplay on tour. It's nice being able to fly home visiting mum. Everybody else has to stick do Brother Ben's method.

Elvis has left the building and Ringo sings. Coldplay just was on stage playing their third song of their encore - "Fix You" - together with the audience's celebratory euphoria, which came out of the crowd of the Maimarkt-hall in Mannheim, and giving everybody the heebie-jeebies with their four-voiced singing in the climax. Then hand in hand they bowed in front of the applauding audience at the stage's front end, while the Beatle's "Good Night" was playing out of the speakers. One minute later - Ringo just rises his voice for the second verse and the approx. 8.000 people clap their hands bloody to convince the band for a second encore - the four band-members and their crew are sitting already in their vans, which wait about 130 ft. behind the stage with running engines. Away. Just celebratory, now gone.

Before Coldplay's "Twisted Logic"-tour, which will still keep them busy in 2006, is going on at the day after tomorrow in Zürich, the band will have a day off, that is going to be used for a trip homeward to London. The rented private-jet is waiting at the airport of Frankfurt for his small trip across the channel. Of course they could have thought about a second encore and it seems to be a little hard-boiled, but it's quite understandable, that the four guys don't want to stay long in the backstage-area after a hard day of work and can't wait to get to see their wives and children at home.

It was a hard year. It began with the belated completion of their new, third album 'X&Y', what influenced the marked value of EMI in a legendary way. Therefore more effort was invested in commercials and promo-stuff, what created a huge pressure of ecpectations on the new album, which it never could have reached - and which brought much antipathy to Coldplay: The band, which during the times of their second album AROBTTH never could have done much wrong, was in 2005 both the holy grale of music-journalists and the punching bag of crtics. X&Y was (among the important albums of 2005) the one with the most irritating criticisms: Reaching from the (rarely given) highest rating of the english magazine Q to a painful and disastrous review of the New York Times.

Jonny Buckland knows that many things didn't go well. "Hype is so dangerous", says the guitar player having a fresh cold at the afternoon right before the Mannheim-gig, "and we did our best to avoid it. But it wasn't enough. When a cd is so hyped, the people are expecting some day that it can heal cancer! But in the end it's just a cd." In the meantime the promotion was drastically reduced. "You can do too much as well and get on the people's wick". During the tour the band does just a few short-interviews. Besides of Buckland sits drummer Will Champion with us in the boring room in the cellar of the Maimarkt-hall. "Well, it's a special factor", he says, "if your band grows bigger and bigger, you just aren't only a topic for the music-press anymore. We've read about us in music-magazines and music-sections, but suddenly we appear in the big gazettes..." - "In the fucking economy-section", Buckland grumbles, "with this whole EMI-stock-market-shit!".

A prime reason for Coldplay's appearance outside of the music-sections is the celebrity-state of singer Chris Martin. He, is heard, is a little bit "annoyed" today. At the belated arrival of the band and crew was indeed the smell of anger and nervousness in the air. That fits perfectly to the seperation-rumors, which go along with the band since over a year and lately also during the tour. "Oh my god", Champion sighs, takes the paper printed out by the interviewer just for fun containing a pretty bold internet-statement ("bad tempers and big egos are threatening to tear the group apart!") and reads. "Ha!", he laughs and isn't able to completely hide a whiff of bad temper: "'We're a pain in each other's neck.' I never said that! It's the opposite. We're getting along very well at the moment. You don't have to bother about that.", he speaks and rips the paper into little snippets.

And if they would be a pain in their necks at all: A band, which has signed the inner cancellation, would never extend a sound-check to a song-writing-session. "Yes, there are new ideas for songs", Champion says. But they're getting back to the studio in autum 2006 in the earliest - so long will the tour last. Today's sound-check stays usual: For nearly 20 minutes the four guys are trying out a reggea-like tune, which - well - still needs some improvements to become a Coldplay-hit one day. Meanwhile a nearby happening describes the nice and relaxed mood behind the stage: As Coldplay's security-head, a tall and authoritative man, discovers a member of the local crew taking photos he doesn't run to him and catch the bugger, but he looks for a german EMI-employee as a interpreter: She may tell her country-mate to please delete the pictures on the memory-card.

After the sound-check the band isn't seen around much which retracted in the (common) changeroom. Later Buckland, Champion and bass-player Guy Berryman are having dinner together with some other crew-members in the catering-room, where the cooks of "Eat To The Beat" are presenting nice food. Martin arrives belated, after he, as nice as he is, personally announced the support act Goldfrapp to the audience: "Be nice to them!"

During Coldplay's gig there's suddenly spooky silence lurking around through the backstage-area. It's funny: Just a few feet away the stars are rocking and the fans are screaming and sweating - and back here in the darkness there are light-technicians sitting in front of monitors like in the NASA-headquaters, while some roadies, not impressed by the noise, are sleeping on flightcases. Their time comes after the quick leaving of the band when they're pitching into the stage and disassembling it in a stunning speed. The tourmanager gave a funny but kind of serious advice to the crew down in the catering room for their tomorrow's day off: "The show at saturday has to be jaw-dropping!", is read on a piece of paper between the coffee pots. "So follow brother ben's example tomorrow: early booze-up followed by ten hours of sleep."

Whoever this Brother Ben may be: He seems to know pretty well how to fight the longing for the sofa at home.

Wow thanks for the translation...its a good report! Really interesting insight to their shows and the backstage stuff...nice.

Thanks so much, great translation!!!

Isn't it sad that even the small mentioning of "new ideas for songs" almost has me peeing my pants with excitement
